Rob, you seem to be amazed these players don't flinch when struck by the hurly, and that there are so many flare ups in that video. Think on it, everyone on the field, including the ref and the lineos are Irish. They have all played hurling since they were 5, getting struck by the stick or a huge shoulder charge is,all part of the game. And I'm sure that payer on player violence is 'worse' in the lower leagues, just as it is in soccer (not through malicious intent, but slightly lower skill level and higher degree of clumsiness)
I brought my buddy from Nottingham to a hurling match he had no idea what was going on but at the end of the game he was hooked and said everything u said in this vid. Great content
As an amateur game, the players are very psyched and riled when it comes to the "business end" of Championships - there is a lot of rough and tumble to the beautiful game and when it crosses over to brutality it is more the exception to the rule. Very much the pride and joy of our nation, Hurling is the real Beautiful game!! Nice reaction Video
The amazing thing though is that the scenes from this video are very much the exception to the rule. You generally don't see much in the terms of fights, at least at the senior level of the game. You probably see more in Gaelic Football, due to some very intense rivalries combined with a game that involves more hands on if than hurling.
You should have seen the Limerick v Tipp Game today. The helmets work, one guy took the Sliotar right in the face...Back up and playing in a minute. It was one of the best comebacks I've seen in a Munster final in years...
I've played shinty against hurling players in a composite match and when the flat of the stick hits you, it's like getting an almighty slap (bloody sore but not usually to bad). With the edge of the stick however.... Well I've still got the scar below my knee. To be fair the guy bought me a pint afterwards. Also helmets: effective.
I took a hurl to the neck on someones follow through swing when i was younger with the edge hit right below where my helmet covered couldnt breath right for about an hour
Well Rob, you've had the most measured and analytical reaction to hurling from a perspective of someone who hasn't grown up with the game. I applaud you sir. Slainte !
Rob, love your interest in the game. Most of what happened in the video is such a small part of matches and indeed rareish. When I used to play, and if it ‘kicked off’ the unwritten rule was to ‘drop the hurley (the ‘hurl’) and do your business without it. Think in terms of rugby how they will beat the crap out of each other and have a beer after! As I might have said before it’s a high intensity sport, loaded with skills developed (in childhood really) over years. As I also said before you’d love a live match. Come visit! Indeed depending on where you are in the UK, London have a team in both hurling and Gaelic football at senior levels. Thanks so much for sharing your ‘reaction(s)’! 😉☘️
Me and Charlie(wife) will try and come over at some point in the season! Were in Eastleigh so can get a easy flight from Southampton Airport (Which is in eastleigh so should be Eastleigh Airport!). Would be amazing to visit Croke Park as well! Only problem is, Dublin is apparently stupidly expensive!
I’d guess that the helmets protect against cuts - but like a rugby scrum cap won’t do much to protect against concussions from being whacked by a large piece of ash!!
I'm not sure i dont remember ever getting a concussion through my helmet the are well enough padded and the tacking doesnt whiplash you body as much as it would in rugby for example. the helmers are most useful for protecting against the ball hitting your head tbh also when you lose you cool and swing for someone without thinking and end up witha broken hand lol
There’s also the Scottish game of Shinty: ruclips.net/video/vRbFToHkBk0/видео.html and an annual compromise Shinty/Hurling international series held annually: ruclips.net/video/7IcTGD50ooM/видео.html Wales used to have its own mental game called Bando - which was never formalised in the same way as Shinty or Hurling, but generally seems to have been a cross between the two, but more similar to Shinty. Occasional ‘friendly’ games between villages take place to this day, with the rules agreed between the two captains before the game.
@@RobReacts1 - No. you use both sides of the stick, the ball can be sent airborne more freely, and there aren’t the annoying stoppages of play when the ball hits a player.
The sound you heard that sounded like two stick's striking eachother was more likely hurl meeting ankle , we feel them ones, everyone watching can feel them ones .
At 6:30 or so that big slap wasn't "the slap of 2 sticks". It was stick on flesh, I'm not sure if that was to upperleg/midriff or where no. 8 got hit, but the women could see, and hear, it from where they were.
Most hurlers are never dirty as in the way they play ..it's just a very tough game..really tough ..it can get heated..but on the whole..if it requires a fight, then they drop the hurleys...and go toe to toe...the gentlemen's way..😜
Love your curiosity rob and pleased that you will enjoy the sport more, as someone said we all got smacked by hurlies from a young age, you just marked the guy and tried to take him out during the game as payback - funny on reflection. Old 3000yr game. Funniest one I remember was the ball travelling at very high speed towards me as a blur, I ducked at the very last second and turned to see my marker took out. kids eh :)
There is a trick here. We all have hurls. We all got them while we were learning to walk. You use your hurl to defend yourself. Sliothar coming in at 100MPH and the bloke behind can legally attempt to slap it or hook your hurl before you catch it. Hurl in left hand behind your right hand tries a catch. I have many broken bones to confirm that this can be tricky.
Its great fun to play you only really get hit full smack with a stick if you aren't playing right (it happens maybes once every other game where its a big hit on you) but you do get lots of little niggly hits from the person your marking but your more just trying to wind eachother up at that point. being hit with the ball sucks though.
It's a great game to play. it is played by males and females of all ages. My daughter played at a very high junior level for many years in goal and thrived on the sport. It is, in my humble opinion, the greatest field sport in the world. these hacked together clips do the game no justice at all. It is an amateur sport, requires skill, resilience, athleticism, brains and bravery. to appreciate the game you need to be in the stadium watching a whole game to understand the sheer pace and intensity of the sport.
I have no idea why I'm watching some other lad watch videos I'm also watching....and that I think I may have even seen before. But I'll do it again! (Maybe it's cos your intro reminds me of a Tesla coil)
It’s the oldest field sport in the world. Also, helmets only became mandatory a few years ago. A 20 year old woman died during a match last year after being hit in the head with a hurl.
The helmets aren’t very strong and only because it’s now compulsory the vast majority STILL wouldn’t wear them I stopped playing at about 18yrs ( due to work) and I’ve had both cheekbones broken and fractured jaw and front teeth knocked out plus broken nose twice but a very addictive sport because it’s so violent
Rob, these players are NOT paid, train AT LEAST three times a week, most work full time and it is the greatest game on the planet, REAL hard men!
This was a point i made about the international rules football game. The irish are amateur to a professional standard

The Times once said that Hurling was just like Rugby, except that the players are armed.
Haha that sounds about right
Shoulder to shoulder tackles are allowed. Helmets are only mandatory is the last 15 odd years, before that very few of the top players wore them.

Helmets can make certain sports more dangerous as it can disconnect the player from physical part of the game.
