Job Story: When their former HR Manager called her, OP should have called the HR Manager's Boss and filed a Formal Complaint about the HR Manager... I would have...
I would have commiserated with the HR manager. "Yes I know how much you'd LOVE to get rid of Ms Single Mother, but this isn't the car parking lot swap meet on Sunday".
How does someone complain to HR about a former employee because they won't hire you at an independent firm? I wish my former HR would call me lol. I need another paycheck
We had a teamleader who always came in, complaining he had a cold, then would cough all over everybody who had to sign in on the other side of his desk, with him coughing and spluttering all the time. Then later on in the week complaining that he had to cover somebody's shift, because they had gone sick with "His cold".
Last story. The hoa is discriminating against OP and his wife on RELIGIOUS grounds. If this is in Canada or the US, that's a no-no. Also, if the alcoves are NOT 'common areas', then they must belong to the units. So why can't one keep their shoes there?
If the HOA is in America that goes against the Constitution what they're doing that you can bring down on them like a ton of bricks with the freedom to religion. Also incite the states HOA laws on common areas so that they can't say that this was the recent update. And get the lawyer on them for hypocrisy and inaccuracy with their running of the HOA.
And in some places if you show up (sick or not) and they turn you around and sent you home you get paid for half a day. Even if you were there for 10 minutes. Smart bosses would realize this but then this sub-red-dit isn't for smart bosses.
We had a team leader who always came in when infected with whatever nasty cold was doing the rounds at the time. He would cough all over everybody, who of course got infected, but then would complain when we ended up short staffed, (due to his infecting everybody) but then complained when called upon by the management to cover our jobs. Over about 15 years, he did it often, but never seemed to learn.

Okay, in story 1 if she started to follow me out the door and into a parking lot. I would immediately double back and definitely call a taxi or ride shared just like op Did. No way in heck is crazy Going to follow me home!
I ABSOLUTELY hate to hear that phrase: "I'm a single mother/father" . . .am I supposed to be impressed or what? . . .should have kept those legs together or that zipper up.
In my family I am the last person that gets sick. I hate it every time I get sick because it was always something when you were going to school you miss out on the greatest day ever or having to catch up on a mountain of homework. Also yeah you get all of the good jobs after everybody else's pretty much dropping like flies. And this was before COVID.
Job story: I don't get this single mother. It seems that she uses that status to not be a good worker. There are many single mothers in the work force. And many of them, unlike her, have a support system to help them. They have nobody to fall back on when things go south. What she is doing is giving a false impression that single mothers want easy jobs where they can "goof off". Many of them are the hardest working people out there. If she's not careful, one day she'll get a hard dose of reality. And there will not be anyone to catch her when she falls.
Religious persecution. Check the Constitution, ie. freedom of religion. Is there any other way not to bring your shoes in? Or is just crossing the threshold not acceptable either. Such as, putting them in shoe bags and not touching the floor. There’s a lot I don’t know.
Crappy stories for most, can't you really do better? :/ =? 3rd story: conveniently leaves out details about asking the HOA prior before doing. Can recite the rules, *not* the attempts of making sure you're not violating them. My gf is Japanese? Our shoes stay _inside_ *behind* the front door. This HOA "issue" sounds like a you problem presented as a feeble attempt of gaining sympathy.. On behalf of my gf: FU, because this is *not* how that works. Second... oh no, you have to take a cab because why walk? Walking along side high speed roads is a much better way to avoid possible followers, but who cares about believability on Reddit ;)
It's very unsafe to walk beside busy highways. Strangely, drivers often overtake on the wrong side of people they're tailgating (especially if the person ahead has slowed down because of a random pedestrian) and "boomp". No one is supposed to walk beside busy carriageways and highways. Not supposed to jog, walk their dog; even "legal" push bike riders frequently get hit or killed. Even after leaving their broken down car, on the shoulders of highways; because staying in a stalled car in any lane is scary as well. It's darned dangerous.

Too bad... former HR Department doesn't have a deep well and can not yell "This is SPARTA!'.

True. But I think the comment rests on the misconception that a founder of a religion is a god in that religion.
Book woman: it works both ways. Ask her where she works so you can report her to ^her^ boss.
Here is what I would do for the HOA story file a lawsuit for violating your religious rights and I'd also inform the local federal prosecutor.
Plus publicly embarrass them by contacting the local TV stations. They love stories like that.
With the mall Karen I would have taken her on a tour of the entire mall with the last stop at security
Good idea!!
That was my thinking too.
The problem with HOA jerks is they don't learn unless it hits them in the wallet or they spend some time in jail.

She was such a $h!++y worker that the HR of the company she worked for called OP to complain for not having her taken off their hands.
my bet is "bad co-worker" is friends with "former HR" and that's one of the reasons she's kept her job.
@rankothefiremage That's usually how it works for the entitled lol. I've seen it firsthand.
Former HR Department calling you to hire the mother effer... is a work-related harassment. Needs to involve OP's office lawyers to sue former company.

There’s a power in being able to more than help, but refusing to because the recipient is a douche.
