Join me onboard one of Nightjet's Overnight trains from their home in Austria to Milan, Italy. I will be travelling in a private couchette compartment to see if it is a feasible option for spending a night in and, more importantly, sleeping in.
I took this train a few weeks ago to Verona. I even had the same coach number (417). I paid €120 for a couchette in a 6-bunk compartment. I had the same breakfast and just like you, I didn't have the best sleep either.
Thank you for this interesting video. The NightJet service you travelled on will hopefully soon be replaced by the next generation of stock now under test.
A few weeks ago, ÖBB anounced that the new series of Nightjets (they almost look like the Railjets) will be starting to go in service in December 2023. - it'll take a while, butI'm looking forward to the new series of Nightjets. Yesterday I've seen the new Railjet generation (the front of the train looks like the Siemens Vectron)
You had mentioned that you did not sleep well. On my Amtrak three night trips from New York to the west coast, I never sleep good on the first night. By the second and third nights I sleep well since I have acclimated.
@9:35 ÖBB are in the process of refurbishing their older cars, and also are expanding their fleet with brand new cars. Interestingly those will include 1-person "capsule" style couchettes. @10:24 you can purchase snacks and beverages from the adjacent sleeping car's attendant though.
re your breakfast: I’m surprised they didn’t provide options. Usually they give you the choice of cold cuts, cheese, honey and jam (pick 2), at least on other routes with Nightjet.
You're right, but those more advanced breakfasts are only available to customers staying in the proper sleeper cabins. Couchettes passengers only get this smaller, simpler breakfast.
Maybe you can visit Rotterdam Central Station here in the Netherlands, Wien looks familiair and also a lot of trains but no NightJet stop, but you can spot Eurostar en Eurostar/Thalys here and a lot of IC coaches too, these are old and will be replaced soon !😮
Hopefully, this car is next in line for refurbishment. A broken outlet and a broken lock are not what one expects from the Austrians. ;-) BTW, you paid for that breakfast (such as it was) when you bought your ticket.

It's amazing how dirty the windows are on these trains.

Very interesting to sleep on a train whilst in Europe.

Seems the old man in your cabin was starring at his phone all the time. ^^ Good video.
Just Like All Dad's!

12:13 It is not provided for free. There is nothing free in this world 😊 It is - Included in price

I've actually went through Rotterdam last summer. There is a video of it on my old channel @planesandtrainsfan Paris to Amsterdam on Thalys
Excellent Video. We will be traveling on the nightjet soon, but on a shared couchette. Question: Did you need to check in your luggage?
I didn't bring any cases or large luggage. Just a rucksack.
Hopefully, this car is next in line for refurbishment. A broken outlet and a broken lock are not what one expects from the Austrians. ;-) BTW, you paid for that breakfast (such as it was) when you bought your ticket.
Salt and vinegar 😍😍
The best!
Sorry train didn't rock & roll you to sleep. How was the ride quality?
The ride quality was okay. It was the lack of comfort that prevented me from sleeping
Sorry, but 12 plus hours on an uncomfortable bed looking at bleek scenery does not merit this journey for me
I don't blame you, I also will not be rushing back to do it again in a hurry either.
Really poor for a European sleeper.
Night trains need to offer decent food service and a bar car for passengers who want to socialize.
