- So here's what you need to know about Boulders Beach in South Africa (just outside of Cape Town). The main reason people head there is to see the penguin colony, because they have a protected sanctuary set up that is easily accessible.
It is located right near Simonstown, which is a super cool little coastal village that you could spend a day touring alone, but maybe do so after seeing the penguins.
We couldn't find any information about swimming with the penguins, so that shouldn't be your plan, but you have ample opportunity to get some really good photos of them as you are pretty much right on the beach with these guys. The thumbnail for this video is a photo we snapped, so it should give you an idea of how close you can get.
Avoid weekends, if you can, as they haven't built enough viewing area for the amount of people that show up on non-workdays, and we're sure that summer is even worse.
Regardless, whenever you DO decide to visit, make sure you drive via the coastal road towards Chapman's Peak rather than just taking the highway. The views are completely worth the $3 toll, and we recommend you drive it going back towards Cape Town as opposed to away (which means take the highway to Boulders Beach if you only want to drive the toll road one direction...but both directions are gorgeous).
It's definitely a cool penguin colony to visit in South Africa.
