Lyrics:
Oh, freedom, Oh, freedom,
Oh freedom over me.
And before I'd be a slave
I'd be buried in my grave
And go home to my Lord and be free.
No more weepin,(don't you know), no more weepin,
no more weepin over me.
And before I'd be a slave
I'd be buried in my grave
And go home to my Lord and be free.
Oh freedom,
Oh, freedom, Oh, freedom,
Oh freedom over me.
And before I'd be a slave
I'd be buried in my grave
And go home to my Lord and be free.
And before I'd be a slave
I'd be buried in my grave

Definitely!👍
I cry every time I hear this song. It’s incredibly powerful. That line “before I’ll be a slave, I’ll be buried in my grave”. Chills.
I'm mixed, raised by my white half of the family. I was never taught about the suppression of my ancestors.... but the second I experienced racism, I did my research on my own. I make sure that I listen to this at the very least 1 or 2x a week!✊🏽✊🏽✊🏽
I love that for you!!
✊🏽✊🏽✊🏽
Of course you were raised by the white side and of course you won't ever acknowledge why that's so and why that relates to most if not all the issues that AA's go through in the US. but yeah, it's much easier to blame others ain't it. And I'm talking about 2023, not 1950's which of course was a different story. Focus on building up and improving your communities with regards to fatherlessness and crime. That's how you uplift, not by obsessing on things that happened decades if not centuries ago.
My sister you are beautiful and strong. Keep up the good fight
As an Asian person I could honestly say that Black Americans are the foundation of the US. If it weren’t for them none of us minorities would have had as much rights as we currently have. I will forever support and stand up for the black community.
Update 6/4/2020: I’m actually really surprised with how many responses my comment received. I would like some of you to understand that my initial comment was not meant to dismiss other racial groups’ suffering. To those who thanked me, please don’t. Instead, let’s thank and keep supporting the black community for fighting for all of us. My belief still has not changed to this day and I will do as much as I can to help. Stay safe everyone.
You are now officially the citizen of Africa

Thank you for this wonderful art !!! Thank you my brothers and sisters for changing America for the best ! So sryyy for your hardships and struggles
This song + the comments 🥹 I'm on the bus coming home from school y'all bout to make me cry. I love being a African American/Black American so much, I wouldn't trade it for the world 🙏🏿♥️♥️♥️
They tried to break us, but they didn’t know that we can’t be broken. We are overcomers.
yes we are!
I’m white, but I was raised to believe in equality. I believe in accepting eachother, no matter what race, sexual orientation, or ethnicity. It’s better now that people fought back, because it knocked some sense into my race that equality is important to peace. If nobody had fought back, things might have been different. But thankfully it didn’t go that way.
Wow, thanks for referring to us as "The Whites" as if we're each responsible for what a minority of people did 70 years ago. It's not like black people sold other blacks into slavery. It's not like tens of thousands of white soldiers died for your freedom. It's all us whites ain't it?
I am so sorry for the way our ancestors treated you. Its disgusting. I dont know how anyone could do things like that. They did not deserve any of that.
@Manuel I don't believe you when say your ancestors didn't do that. Did you forget there were also white slaves? It was a different world back then. Do I will say our whether you like it or not.
"I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too great a burden to bear."
~Martin Luther King Jr.
Man my granddad passed away about a year and some change ago at the beautiful age of 102. The son of sharecroppers. I remember him singing this song. My grandma would chime then my mom and her sister. Then the babes.
Never knew why at a young age it was so pretty but chilling. Then I learned my grandfathers story.
Thank you for ALLLL the sacrifices and burdens you took on to give us all we have.
I’ve never been a religious woman at all, and I don’t think that will ever change, but I always feel the power of my people when in hear this. I can absolutely feel their resilience in me.
I hope you find God, and Jesus our Lord and Savior, God sent his only son, Jesus Christ to die for our sins. He died for us and for our sins. Please find God and have everlasting life
I hope this song and other negro hyms help you with whatever you are going through. Thank you for giving this a chance. God Bless❤
Hi,
You don't have to be religious to find Jesus. He's not prescribed to a particular religion. At least not the way most people define the term. He is bigger than any religion. He's called the Saviour, the cure for the human soul. He's a friend when no one else is around
As a minority (im not african american though) I have so much gratitude to the African American community. They stood up for their rights, but also for all other minorities. The diversity of America and its present day prosperity would be non-existent if it werent for their hard work and contributions. People can say what they want about African Americans, but at the end of the day they are the community that truly shaped the United States and its present day values, and brought it into the modern world. Much love!
Love this comment, and not bc I'm blk, but bc it's true

Im Hispanic but I love black American culture as much if not more than my own, starting with their music. To instill such a specific emotion, that I can't for the life of me explain, but presently feel overtaking me with every verse, lifting me higher and higher, that's what this song does to me. Praise God!
Man our people went through so much ism. Grown man here I can't even stop crying so painful man
+TheHeartMadeOfStone Being Hispanic in this nation wasn't a walk in the park. Really, so many nationalities had to fight before they were accepted, even some white people like the Irish, Jewish, and Italian immigrants who came at the Turn of the Century. KKK targeted Jews as well as black people. The Native Americans still don't get the respect they deserve. This song is powerful because it reaches the hearts of many who struggled to be respected in this country, the USA. Hopefully, we reach a point where people truly are accepted. But it starts with each one of us. As an African American, I've seen racism on so many levels. Hatred is a deeply rooted mental sickness.
TheHeartMadeOfStone I am black and love Hispanic culture 😘
TheHeartMadeOfStone ❤❤
You are of the nation of Israel too. Your ancestors were slaves under the Spanish. Most of you are African decent and were raped so that's why u have lighter skin color and speak Spanish. Just like how the Blacks speak English. That was not our native language.
I learned this song when I was abut 6 years old. My Mother went to jail so many times that my Father told her that if she went to jail one more time, he wouldn't marry her. He was in Africa and it was 1962, she is half American Indian, and Black. So she KNOWS what the Struggle is about. She used to look like Joan Baez, and sing like her too. She still looks like Joan but now she's 72 and still full of the Struggle. Man, I admire her.
What a beautiful melody, what angelic voices, this is music, it moves you and you feel the emotions of those hurt by history. The indomitable strength that comes with being human, all of that you can feel with this one song.
I am a white British guy but my great grandfather was mixed race. I have a photo of my African American 2x great grandmother in the 1960s. My great grandfather was stationed in the UK during WW2, he was in the 392nd Engineer General service regiment which was a segregated black regiment. He would of came to the UK with open arms as us Brits accepted anybody and viewed everybody that came to the UK as an equal. This song brings me emotions of what my great grandfather must've felt being in an alien like society where he wasn't judged for the colour of his skin. It's one thing to fight for your country, but to fight it whilst being treated as a second class citizen is the most heroic thing I think anybody can do.

This is so powerful that it makes me weep. I could never understand how men can treat other men differently just bcs of the colour of their skin. People are capable of such cruelty, but oppressing innocent human beings and taking their freedom away that is the worst. But then there's people like Martin L. King who were brave enough to take a stand and fight. And that keeps my faith in humankind unshaken. One good person can be worth a thousant bad ones and certainly can make a difference.

I'd be buried in my grave
And go home to my Lord and be free
Oh, freedom
Oh, freedom, Oh, freedom
Oh freedom over me
And before I'd be a slave
I'd be buried in my grave
And go home to my Lord and be free
No more weepin', (don't you know), no more weepin'
No more weepin' over me
And before I'd be a slave
I'd be buried in my grave
And go home to my Lord and be free
Oh freedom
Oh, freedom, Oh, freedom
Oh freedom over me
And before I'd be a slave
I'd be buried in my grave
And go home to my Lord and be free
And before I'd be a slave
I'd be buried in my grave
And go home to my Lord and be free
I do appreciate it ❤
It brings tears to my eyes to read all the reactions of various people from various ethnic backgrounds. The power of music can bring people together, let us invest more in to that.
I am here after george floyd's death.....This made me cry.
Both of you guys... I can’t agree more.
Same here!!!! 😭😭😭
I'm brazilian and i'm so very sorrow for floyd's death. In Brazil, the racism kill very blacks lives too.
Same 😭 I feel like going on the streets and singing this from the bottom of my heart with all that I am.. until people join me in singing this.. we all bleed the same and breathe the same air.. i would die for a black person any day.. but regardless of the color.. i would die if my death brings awareness and stops this hate.. 😞

As a white man in America, this song brings me to my knees and really strikes a chord with me. Black people ensured so much...and rose triumphant. Amen!
Thank you for your powerful words
I'm white and this just brings tears to my eyes thinking about the crimes my people committed on the African American community. I can't even begin to imagine how this song must fill the hearts of the black community with pride and heartbreak to think of the atrocities your ancestors endured and still came out victorious to leave a legacy of strength, nobility and grace for their children that has endured for generations and generations yet to come.
Thank you for your compassion ❤
Thank you my sister & may GOD continue to bless you!!!
No White Guilt ✊🏻
Compassion is what matters.. wish republican conservatives had this passion..
Support reparations because it’s a generational debt that is still owed 🙏🏽
To be of this world is a family divided but together in Jesus Christ we’re a family reunited. Much love to all my brothers and sisters!
The voices of my people crying out to THE MOST HIGH YAH! He is the Only one who can rescue and save us!
Not tryna make you mad or nothing but do you really know who yahweh is?
This song gives me the chills, it is just so amazing! No Words can explain the pain and suffering these amazing forefathers had to take with them into their graves. Freedom to all mankind!
Amen before I be a slave Ill be buried in my grave go home to my lord and be free
