I am so heartbroken to hear this, I firmly believe each person has his right to follow their conscience. But certain persons with the platform that a person like John Piper carries are called to a higher purpose. Millions of innocent unborn children being murdered and no one being held accountable. I agree. Christians who are primarily pastorally moved can often become apostolically blind and find themselves nursing their shepherding temperaments rather than developing a kingly perspective. Thank God David could do both. His shepherding heart didn’t blind him from the mandate from God to fight for righteousness in his nation. He knew mercy but could execute justice when God commanded. If the church wants take a stand on abortion politically then they and should start addressing young men and old men about having sex outside of marriage and families should confront their sons about it.

There are bigger issues at stake in this presidential election, beyond the two, deeply compromised candidates (Trump with his egotistical arrogance & Biden with his corrupt hypocrisy). Christians, for the sake of integrity, should rebuke Trump when he behaves poorly; but, the policies he has -- and likely will continue -- to espouse are overall much more consistent with a biblical worldview/value system. For that reason, Christians who seek to live in accord with that worldview ought to vote for Trump, rather than Biden. Nevertheless, whatever the ultimate result, we are to be of good cheer, for the Lord Jesus Christ has overcome the world, and God reigns (present tense) from on high! The presidency is pretty much settled but what I can’t seem to understand is how no one is tracking back to Habakkuk. God used the Assyrians to bring judgement. Whichever side you feel is worse, that are not worse than the Assyrians!! God will use whoever He desires for His glory. I did vote and have my obvious preference but I’m still 100% believing that God will work in a greater way than through politics. I think if you REALLY, REALLY read the Bible you will see that John Piper is correct. donald trump is NOT Cyrus and it's not being a responsible Christian to claim that he is. Yes, good idea to read the article first. I have respect for John Piper and I read his article 3 times and was SO disappointed in his response. Piper's article had only one good section, the area where he talks to pastors. I agree with Lou Engel's response in the video above and also 2 great response videos from AD. According to the Editor's note at the end of Piper's article, Piper has confirmed that he will not vote for either of the 2 main candidates. He has that right, but in essenceI feel that he is then supporting Biden, whose character and policies look to be way more corrupt than Trump/Republican policy has been. Like you, I have already voted for Republican candidates but with all we are learning about Biden/Democratic Party lately it was an easy choice for me.

It is saddening to read the article by John Piper and equally men raised up by the Holy Spirit having to refute it sensitively along with Wayne Grudem. I am convinced all 3 men including Lou, Wayne and Piper are gifts to the church. However it is not John Piper's personal conviction that is at stake whether he considers both candidates have negative influences on society because of either their supposed policy holdings or their character flaws but Piper is bound to know his influence could be instrumental to many voters and result in no voting or a vote for the policies of the Democrats. These are diametrically opposed to bibical principles. Who truly knows "Trumps" current heart on these issues or how much he is smart enough to sense the voters whom make up his first Presidency will swing towards him because of appearing to actually have become more pro-life, moral and genuinely is God's chosen man to withhold deeper evils. As a true repentant sinner myself, it has taken a lifetime of painful growth to see things as God does. John Piper is a deeply sensitive lover of God but I must admit his decision to make what should be private (because of his followers and influence) should have remained that or the article should have been written after the Election. Now before anyone reprimands me for using the word ' follow' in association with Piper and suggests that only following Christ is the answer, I know that! But we can all agree that while we are all priests guided by the Holy Spirit if we truly trust in the finished work at Calvary ,we acknowledge that we are built up by teaching priests whom dig deep to exhort us . Trump has by his own admission not being truly convicted by the Holy Spirit but his choice and admiration for Amy Coney Barrett and Mike Pence is pretty awesome, to name but a few. Paul the apostle was a pretty awful character before conversion and he was also happy that the Gospel was preached even though it was taking advantage of him being in prison. Meaning, Trump despite his past, mostly is preaching scripture even if he may be acting on occasion. John Piper seems to have concerns that there is some equivalency to Democrat Policy and President Trump. But this is akin to likening apples and oranges. It should be the policies and characters, however that would be ideal. So surely we opt for policy even if the personality is not our preference. We are often in many areas of life having to weigh up the lesser of two evils . I live in UK and cannot vote but equally I pray and know that whomever is appointed will be God's Will. Even the proportion of those who allowed great teachers to influence them, they will be no match for God as it is clear He raises up the powers that be. Our perfect God. No man is perfect or infallible. So we don't need to Piper bash. He was and is entitled to hold the views of the tender conscience. And we who think his opinion quite influential still must forgive him and enjoy the gift God has given him. This is not an occasion to bash him or call him names. I am so heartbroken to hear this, I firmly believe each person has his right to follow their conscience. I agree. Christians who are primarily pastorally moved can often become apostolically blind and find themselves nursing their shepherding temperaments rather than developing a kingly perspective. Christians, for the sake of integrity, should rebuke Trump when he behaves poorly; but, the policies he has -- and likely will continue -- to espouse are overall much more consistent with a biblical worldview/value system. The presidency is pretty much settled but what I can’t seem to understand is how no one is tracking back to Habakkuk. God used the Assyrians to bring judgement. Whichever side you feel is worse, that are not worse than the Assyrians!! God will use whoever He desires for His glory. I did vote and have my obvious preference but I’m still 100% believing that God will work in a greater way than through politics. It is saddening to read the article by John Piper and equally men raised up by the Holy Spirit having to refute it sensitively along with Wayne Grudem. I am convinced all 3 men including Lou, Wayne and Piper are gifts to the church. However it is not John Piper's personal conviction that is at stake whether he considers both candidates have negative influences on society because of either their supposed policy holdings or their character flaws but Piper is bound to know his influence could be instrumental to many voters and result in no voting or a vote for the policies of the Democrats. These are diametrically opposed to bibical principles. Who truly knows "Trumps" current heart on these issues or how much he is smart enough to sense the voters whom make up his first Presidency will swing towards him because of appearing to actually have become more pro-life, moral and genuinely is God's chosen man to withhold deeper evils. As a true repentant sinner myself, it has taken a lifetime of painful growth to see things as God does. John Piper is a deeply sensitive lover of God but I must admit his decision to make what should be private (because of his followers and influence) should have remained that or the article should have been written after the Election. Now before anyone reprimands me for using the word ' follow' in association with Piper and suggests that only following Christ is the answer, I know that! But we can all agree that while we are all priests guided by the Holy Spirit if we truly trust in the finished work at Calvary ,we acknowledge that we are built up by teaching priests whom dig deep to exhort us . I often have to listen to John Mcarthur three times before I fully grasp the brilliance of gift in him.
To be fair, Piper has let the cat out of the bag and it would seem an error of judgement but we too must see 4 more years of the Trump administration to learn if Piper may have points. I do suspect while Trump is wild natured he may answer questions differently as he seems to have matured. Trump has by his own admission not being truly convicted by the Holy Spirit but his choice and admiration for Amy Coney Barrett and Mike Pence is pretty awesome, to name but a few. Paul the apostle was a pretty awful character before conversion and he was also happy that the Gospel was preached even though it was taking advantage of him being in prison. Meaning, Trump despite his past, mostly is preaching scripture even if he may be acting on occasion.
John Piper seems to have concerns that there is some equivalency to Democrat Policy and President Trump. But this is akin to likening apples and oranges. It should be the policies and characters, however that would be ideal. So surely we opt for policy even if the personality is not our preference. We are often in many areas of life having to weigh up the lesser of two evils . I live in UK and cannot vote but equally I pray and know that whomever is appointed will be God's Will. Even the proportion of those who allowed great teachers to influence them, they will be no match for God as it is clear He raises up the powers that be. Our perfect God. No man is perfect or infallible. So we don't need to Piper bash. He was and is entitled to hold the views of the tender conscience. And we who think his opinion quite influential still must forgive him and enjoy the gift God has given him. This is not an occasion to bash him or call him names. To his own Master he stands or falls. If he senses he was out of order he may write another article but if not he will let it fall. I pray that "Desiring God ministries" suffers no ill effects. I pray we all learn from our past mistakes including politicians. So cheer up everyone "Trust in the Lord with all our hearts and lean not(fully) to our own understanding. To the Pastors (shepherds) and the Prophets a warning:
“¶ Woe be unto the pastors that waste and scatter the sheep of my pasture! said the Lord. Therefore thus hath the Lord God of Israel said unto the pastors that feed my people: Ye have scattered my flock and driven them away and have not visited them; behold, I visit upon you the evil of your doings, said the Lord. And I will gather the remnant of my sheep out of all the lands where I have driven them and will cause them to return to their folds; and they shall be fruitful and increase. And I will set up shepherds over them which shall feed them; and they shall fear no more nor be dismayed neither shall they be lacking, said the Lord. Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper and shall execute judgment and righteousness in the earth. In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this shall be his name by which they shall call him, THE Lord OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS. Therefore, behold, the days come, said the Lord, and they shall no longer say, The Lord lives, who brought up the sons of Israel out of the land of Egypt; but, The Lord lives, who caused the seed of the house of Israel to come up and out of the land of the north wind, and from all the lands where I had driven them, and they shall dwell in their own land. ¶ My heart is broken within me because of the prophets, all my bones shake; I was like a drunken man, and like a man whom wine has overcome, before the Lord, and before the words of his holiness. For the land is full of adulterers; for because of the oath the land is deserted; the booths of the wilderness are dried up, and their course was evil, and their force was not right. For both prophet and priest are feigned; even in my house I have found their wickedness, said the Lord. Therefore their way shall be unto them as slippery ways in the darkness; they shall be driven on and fall therein; for I will bring evil upon them, even the year of their visitation, saith the Lord.
Therefore, thus hath the Lord of the hosts said against those prophets: Behold, I will cause them to eat wormwood and make them drink the waters of gall, for from the prophets of Jerusalem is hypocrisy gone forth upon all the land. Thus hath the Lord of the hosts said, Hearken not unto the words of the prophets that prophesy unto you: they make you vain: they speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of the Lord. They say boldly unto those that stir me to anger, The Lord hath said, Ye shall have peace; and they say unto anyone that walks after the imagination of his own heart, No evil shall come upon you. For who has stood in the secret of the Lord and has seen and heard his word? Who has paid attention to his word and heard it? Behold, that the whirlwind of the Lord shall go forth with fury, and the whirlwind which is ready shall fall grievously upon the head of the wicked. The anger of the Lord shall not return until he has executed and until he has performed the thoughts of his heart: in the last of the days ye shall understand it with understanding. I did not send those prophets, yet they ran; I did not speak to them, yet they prophesied. But if they had stood in my secret, they would also have caused my people to hear my words, and they would have caused them to return from their evil way and from the evil of their doings. Am I a God of the near only, said the Lord, and not a God of the far? Can any hide himself in hiding places that I shall not see him? said the Lord. Do I not fill heaven and earth? said the Lord. I have heard what those prophets said, that prophesy lies in my name, saying, I have dreamed, I have dreamed. How long shall this be in the heart of the prophets that prophesy lies and that prophesy the deceit of their own heart? Do they not think to cause my people to forget my name by their dreams which each one tells his neighbour, so much that their fathers have forgotten my name for Baal? The prophet with whom the dream came, let him tell the dream; and he with whom my word came, let him speak my true word. What is the chaff to the wheat? said the Lord. Is not my word like as a fire? saith the Lord; and like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces? Therefore, behold, I am against the prophets, saith the Lord, that steal my words each one from his neighbour. Behold, I am against the prophets, saith the Lord, that sweeten their tongues and say, He said. Behold, I am against those that prophesy false dreams, saith the Lord, and did tell them, and caused my people to err by their lies, and by their flattery; yet I did not send them, nor command them; and they did not profit this people at all, said the Lord. ¶ And when this people or the prophet or the priest shall ask thee, saying, What is the burden of the Lord? thou shalt then say unto them, What burden? I will forsake you, said the Lord.”

Every time I have ever voted (since 1974), I have voted privately. For years there was curtain drawn behind you as you voted. That was done so that your voting might be kept private. I recommend to John Piper and everyone else to keep the curtain in place. Stop talking about it. We’re dividing the church over politics.
Excellent articulate response. Piper's accusation of POTUS bringing more deaths than abortions is disturbing + outrageous. Where we differ, calling him a 'great' man of God. In Mark, Jesus said to the young rich man, *_"Jesus said to him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good except one--God?"_* I cannot placate in the face of such erred leadership and influence.
Mr. Engle and other brothers and sisters who have posted. I Think we all should look at the manner in which Wayne Gruden disagreed with our brother John piper. He did so in an effort to do as scripture said “win our brother” . He first went directly to him and did it with humility. It saddens me to see how much we are circumventing the process of Matthew 18 when we have an issue with another brother and we are looking just like the world on social media platforms. I too am pro life and think they are better ways to address our platforms and disagreements or frustrations in a way that does not malign the way of the gospel and make us look foolish to the world as they watch as publicly argue with one another. Also I want to encourage all of those who are so passionate who are pro life to not just be pro life in word but in deed. What does this look like? This looks like: Adopting a child or becoming a foster parent or being a respite family or mentoring a single parent who has decided to choose life . I say this in all humility- my family has done each one of them in some fashion and I find my friends who all do this in deed tend to have less energy to publicly mudsling other people in the pro-life argument as we are reserving our energies for the fight on the ground. Plus serving brings out things in you that humble you so when you disagree you do it with grace and humility. Please brothers and sisters let’s reserve our efforts for what really matters and when we have a platform let’s speak with Meekness and humility...let’s not operate as a cancel culture! Let’s ask ourselves...Where and what would Jesus be doing if he was here? I think he would be serving and publicly preaching the gospel of the Kingdom because he wants to win people on both sides of arguments. Also when he rebuked his disciples He often pulled them aside and did so privately. Rarely did he publicly do it and the disciples were Very off most of the time in their beliefs and aim. Furthermore, Let’s get some skin in the game and not just talk about being pro life let’s be pro life. Brothers and sisters, we will give an account for EVERY word we speak, even the ones we post! Love you all with the Love of the Lord! Pray for those you think are off and demonstrate truth.
