    that's just a really dreamy, otherworldly sort of palette,,, fog and fairies, perhaps little people that might steal someone away. really like how it gives impression of movement.. snakes and dragons for sure.

    As I watch this excellent review in France, I have just been swatching my own three sets of these. One year after your review I can only buy these wonderful paints in sets of three in cardboard boxes at around 23/25 euros a pack. Don’t know if this is just Europe or the UK as well. Thanks for the review, and great advice about the rewetting. I love the granulating effect. Jo in France 🇫🇷

      Maybe no all but some for sure. @Kimberly crick art has a few videos on how to mix some of these Super Granulating and Primatek paints. There’s a few pigments that are necessary like potters pink PR 233, and mars (lunar) black PBk 11 and a few others. The question is: do I want the hassle of mixing or convenience of premixed paints. If I had a tree that grew money I’d buy all the paints that intrigue or inspire me but I don’t 😭. And mixing is always a great exercise, but yeah, I wish I could afford some of Schmincke’s supergranulating.

    Hi, Sarah. My immediate thought was "The Shire" rather than the UK shire counties, too, so thank you for that, and for the lovely Hobbit door and stonework. The textures of wood and stone looked really easy to achieve with those paints.
    I'll wait with anticipation for when you use these en plein air in the forest, to see how they work with more trees and bushes. :)

      No one could ever convince me that these weren't inspired by Lord of the Ring's shire and that's final. 😂

      @@SarahBurnsStudio "I live in Scotland for goodness sake" This has sent my mind spinning through all those Scottish counties with 'Shire' in them!!! Yes, including your own Morayshire, whose magic you show us each time you make a video. Who could *not* believe in magic when there are fairy houses and gnome's gilets everywhere you look, and which find their way into your sketches and paintings?
      Having worked with children all my life, I'm thankful for the joy they've brought me from their own childlike wonder, and being able, as an adult, to share my own childlike joy and wonder with them. So it's a real joy to see the magic at work in your work!
      "I'm aware shire is a normal word in the UK" Oops - sorry - I should have put "too" at the end of this: "My immediate thought was "The Shire" rather than the UK shire counties [too]" ! (I've just added it in!)

    Beautiful painting , a proper hobbit house! I would suggest for those not able to buy the Schmincke colours to look at what pigments are used in these and then " shop" their own stash of watercolours w the same or other granulating pigments to see if they have the same pigments, ex PB 29 Ultramarine, a granulating colour, and then mix them together w interesting results. Really fun is had by mixing a granualting colour together with a non granulating one on cold pressed or rought watercolourpaper, then one can get really fun separating results. And it is nicer to your wallet too;-).

    • @SarahBurnsStudio
      @SarahBurnsStudio  2 года назад +1

      Yes I agree! I think it would be a super fun experience to make your own - I've been doing that sort of by adding semi-granulating colors to my palette here and there.

    • @SUSSDUE
      @SUSSDUE 2 года назад

      @@SarahBurnsStudio your video really inspired me to check my somewhat embarrasingly huge stash of tubes and pans for granulating pigments and came up w quite a few- especially the Daniel Smith line has some very beautiful ones. But as I usually paint botanical art almost all my paints are on the " smooth side", so yesterday I finally convinced myself I " needed" some more granulating pigments, looked at what pigments Schmincke use in their sets, persuaded the family an hours trip to Stockholm was in order ( we have very few proper art stores here in Sweden apart from a few in the capital), dragged the daughter ( who is at art school and can act as a proper alibi for buying art supplies..) into the shop and bought Schmincke watercolours w the pigments I didn´t have. I saw the sets too in the shop and was tempted, but figured out it was more economical, even if Schmincke is an expensive brand in itself, to buy separate single pigment tubes than the sets. I am thinking of perhaps doing some own mixes in empty pans- do you have any experience if that works or do " homemade" blends of pigments turn out bad compared to when a manufacturer- who apparently have all the technical know how- mix pigments? I understand nothing can be excatly like their blends. but I would hate to have bought expensive paints just for a mix to become useless. So if anyone has any experience in mixing blends of different tubes of watercolour I would be very grateful.
      but right now I am happily sitiing at my desk mixing colours and it is such fun in itself!

    • @SarahBurnsStudio
      @SarahBurnsStudio  2 года назад +1

      @@SUSSDUE Oh absolutely! I mix tubes all the time. Most of my main palettes have "custom" mixes that are various brands/colors. My main suggestion is to do a small test first. Try a little bit on the side and paint a variety of swatches (some thick, some diluted). Let it dry. See how it settles and mixes. It all comes down to what YOU like!

    I was waiting for my tax return to get these. Jackson's sent the notice that they made 3 new sets and, of course, by the time I got my return all the 5ml sets were gone so did I say "Wait for the restock Amy."? No. I bought the 15 ml sets. But in my defense, the 15ml sets on the Jackson'e site are the same price as the 5ml sets on Blick and Jerry's in the US where I am. I bought them yesterday morning as soon as my return hit my account and Jackson's sent the email letting me know my order has been dispatched that afternoon. I am always amazed that I order from the UK and receive my packages in about 3 days, but I order from the US (where I actually live) and I will wait for up to 2 weeks for some places to even SHIP my order! I'm in a bit of a LOTR frenzy lately - which is ridiculous, because I still haven't finished reading the books. I love Tolkiens world building and how much of a back story he gives to all his characters, but his writing style is giving me a hard time (even worse when reading the German translation) ^^' Right now, I'm reading The Fellowship of the Ring intermittently with Frank Herbert's Dune books and some more contemporary stuff (right now Erin Morgenstern's The Starless Sea) 😁
    That said, I love your rendition of the hobbit home, it looks soooo cozy. I'm in lov3 with those greens 🥰 If you feel like venturing farther into Schmincke's super granulating colours, I'm sure you'd find Oto Kano's (especially when trying to decide on which colours to choose, their palette of granulating colours has grown quite extensive by now and they aren't exactly inexpensive [even though I love that they now offer half pans, too, I might actually cave and get some for myself as well] Kim Crick's and The Mind Of Watercolours videos on them helpful, at least if you haven't watched them yet :3. Oh you should at least watch the first movie to see the Shire at its best, even half the movie...

    Aren't these watercolours gorgeous. I bought the Haze collection in tubes and love them so much, they dilute and granulate so easily. It's interesting to see that the pans need a little bit more love to get them moving. Yes a Hobbit home painting is the perfect subject 😍xx

    These are so pretty! But so far out of my price range 😒 hopefully someday these will be in my palette! These soft colors are like my Derwent graphite paints, only with granulation...

    This set looks stunning! And I love the painting you created! It's been a while since I last read/watched anything Lord of the Rings, and I desperately want to revisit it. Fingers crossed that I'll have time for that sometime soon haha. So excited to see more of the super granulating colors in the future!

    Oh yas, our elven queeeennn! This absolutely looks straight out of a fairy tale book, right next to a large, gold illuminated letter 😍 so inspiring..
    I'm really glad I caught this upload, not just because it was awesome, but because I haven't yet ordered my own shire set of tubes and I hadn't even thought about using your link. It's probably not your style but I wish you would have reminded me the other day when I mentioned this set was in my cart. I'd be happy to pay my thanks to you, even though it's in such a nominal way.. About the granulating sets though - I need the Shire, that's written, but can you recommend another set from the line to complement these-now that you've played with a variety? Thanks!

      It's ok! I hate self-advertising in other platforms like that. But I really appreciate you!!
      I absolutely LOVE these colors from the other sets:
      Deep Sea: blue, green, violet is also wonderful but depends if you already have a lot of violets
      Tundra: Rose (pink), blue, violet
      And for mixing: Volcano red & yellow

      @@SarahBurnsStudio I can imagine you'd hate it..it seems uncomfy BUT for situations like this specifically, people (with very rare exception) WANT to help. On that note, what's the easiest way to find all your Schmincke links? I think I'm ready to make my order! Great suggestions BTW and there's a set of half pans with just 1/2 from each set. I do like the soft, natural look of the shire palette but I feel it needs some violet, reds or even blues to punch it up. Looking forward to what you're showing us next 😊

    schmincke paint is very good but I stopped buying it after I learned more about animal ingredients in art materials and schmincke use oxgal in their watercolour paint. I love animals so no animal has to die to become a brush, paper or paint for me. else I would definitely get them. I hope they change their formula of their professional line into vegan one day.

      Heard back:
      "There are different watercolour series with different focus in our range:
      Our series 14 HORADAM® AQUARELL, which is the professional series, is made traditionally with ox gall as a part of the wetting agent. We do so since the beginning when we achieved the patent for our HORADAM® series in 1892. It was a decision to maintain the traditional composition with this natural product in one of our watercolour series. Ox gall is added in traces only. For our needs no animals die just for the ox gall, it is always a by-product; it is not taken from alive animals. So, no animals are caged and killed for this specific purpose.
      As some customers want to buy watercolours containing no ingredients of animal origin, we are happy to offer our series 16 AKADEMIE® Aquarell. It do not contain any ox gall or other animal products (please also have a look to our vegan information: www.schmincke.de/en/information/did-you-know/vegan-information-about-the-term-and-used-in-schmincke-artists-colours.html). Furthermore, our series 24 AQUA DROP - a fluid kind of watercolour - also is made completely without raw materials from animal origin." - Schmincke laborteam@schmincke.de

      @@SarahBurnsStudio thank you for sharing. akademie I knew about but than Daniel smith is better who have vegan watercolor except 3 colours which can be replaced with a other one's of their colours such as ivory black with animal ingredients that became for me lunar black which is vegan. I prefer that above their (schmincke) akedemie paints.
      indeed the animal isn't specific slaughtered for the oxgal but yet without slaughter their won't be oxgal for them. I don't eat animals either so for me it's not a option. thank you for doing this research and sharing it 😊👍🏻
