  • The Stanley Adventure Cook & Brew is basically a French press style coffee maker but it doubles as a cook pot as well. It has a few drawbacks but also a few additional features that make it worth looking at.
    You can order the stainless steel lid I use in the video at the link below. The 10.6cm lid is the closest fit

    Great video. Two thumbs up!
    However, used coffee grounds doesn't hurt the environment a bit. I just put the paper filter from my coffee in the fire or in my trash bag. The grounds can be ground underfoot and mixed with the soil or buried with my ashes. Like I said. Doesn't hurt a thing.

    I just returned from a 9 day motorcycle camping trip. First time use of the Stanley French Press. I was impressed with the function of the pot. One morning I had 7 other motorcyclist join us for morning coffee. Fast brewing on a butane stove.
    Along with a GSI camp stove toaster, a loaf of bakery bread, peanut butter and honey I impress my fellow campers with breakfast.

    It looks like the cylinder walls are smooth because I would imagine that any further stamping of the cylinder wall to provide more fill-volume marks, would cause the piston seals to leak coffee grounds back into the cylinder, as the piston is pushed down. Also, those handles are a bit odd vis-a-vis true "butterfly" handles, in that they are simply the wire profile of a true coffee pot handle; I guess they are made that way for ease of pouring. IMO this item is more on the cusp for car-camping than backpacking-but I do agree with you that the two-in-one option is pretty nice! Thanks for another nice vid...:)

    • @MarkYoungBushcraft
      @MarkYoungBushcraft  6 лет назад +1

      Good thought on the stamping. Makes sense. I agree about its intended use. I will probably only carry it if I was making coffee for two or more people. Then the weight/bulk can be distributed. Thank you for commenting

    I also declared that my aeropress coffee was untouchable in the woods. Liked it for the size, didn't like that 2 coffee lovin' people had to brew at different times. Been tinkering with this and despite its size, this'll be replacing my aeropress this year. Thanks.

      I agree, making small amounts of coffee is the one downside of the AeroPress. You can make a concentrated brew in it and then add hot water but the Stanley Cook and Brew is so much easier. Thanks for commenting

    Great video Mark and a good coffee is so important. One of my good friend from Calgary on Instagram always say that Bushcraft is the art of making a good coffee in any kind of scenario ☕️☕️☕️😉 I am a big fan of french press coffee And my kit consist of the piston of a broken glass bodum that fits perfectly in my Toaks 750 ml titanium pot. Never try aeropress which is probably the closest coffee you can make that can compare to an espresso. Beside french press, a good cowboy coffee or my little italian coffee makes are my 3 favorites way of brewing in the woods. One big advantage of the french press is that you can use it for make tea or wild plants tea with ease.
    Side notes: I have the seatosummit mug for 3 years now And I Really love it and even If your Stanley kit doesn't have mesurements the mug have them in onces and milliliters. Regarding the Nano stability when using the legs directed inside some have mod it with little pieces of tubing to bind a the bottom together. Last, to avoid your handle becoming too hot use the little windbreaker that can be attached to the Nano it avoid the heat And the flame Going directly in that direction. Take care my friend And thanks for this awsome cup of coffee 👊✌️

    Very thorough review. I bought one of these before I saw any reviews. When I first unboxed it I thought it was too big and heavy, but the only pack weight gain was the plastic press which is very light. The pot and lid replace my existing pot and lid, so no weight gain there. It fits my backpacking style perfectly.

    I really like my Stanley Aventure Boil and Brew set. Since I don't always drink coffee but prefer tea often I don't always bring the insert with me but now that I have a lid I like the 32 oz pot over say the classic (and awesome) smaller Standard Stanley Adventure Cup (the one with the nesting heavy green cups). This slightly larger pot is very nice. If you, too, love this kit but don't use the insert then you may want to check out the following alternate kit.
    I have found a nesting pot set by Power Paracord which fits that sweet pot size of the Stanley Boil and Brew (the metal lid from the Power Paracord is NOT INTERCHANGEABLE though with the Boil and Brew; not sure if the lid I got for the Boil and Brew will fit on the Power Paracord, though... I will have to check, but it looks like that lid is no longer available from Survival Resources) and gives me nesting potential. It is 33, instead of 32 oz. Slightly wider diameter but not as tall as the Boil & Brew. What I love about the Power Paracord kit is that it has two sets of butterfly handles which allows me to nest a STANDARD Nalgene bottle in it. The smaller Stanley Adventure Cup set could only nest the "Backpacker" tapered version of the Nalgene and could only nest it with removable/modificaton of the handle that folded over the top. THIS solves that issue. This is a well-made quality kit with a metal tab on the lid. I wish it came with twin lids, though, for both "pots". The main negative of the Power Paracord gear is that it doesn't come with volume markings. it is actually large enough that you can nest the smaller Stanley Adventure Cup inside of it (so obviously the standard sierra-size lid won't fit)! If it had the volume markings, came with a couple of lids, had an additional French Press insert like the Boil & Brew, and was Titanium it would be the ULTIMATE kit. However, weight isn't much of an issue for me and I like the food grade stainless. It isn't always available on Amazon and Amazon seems the only place the Power Paracord kit can be purchased at. Still, this is now my go-to kit.
    Mark, I wonder how well the pour over system will work with this larger kit.

      Well thought out system you have. I looked for the Power Paracord set but note that it is currently unavailable on Amazon. Any suggestions where it can be found? Thanks for commenting

    I enjoyed your review. I indulge in black rifle coffee myself and thoroughly enjoy it. Gunship and Silencer Smooth are my favorite roasts. I use a Stanley adventure cook set and discovered that the filter assembly from a Bodum or a MR Coffee coffee press will work with that pot. I simply removed the coffee press lid from the rod assembly and have coffee press ability without additional pots. Parts can be found on Ebay where someone has broken their glass coffee press and is selling the metal parts.

    I got one a year ago. Seems like a lot of wasted coffee in the bottom after you use the press. If you don't use all the coffee real quick it gets stronger the longer it sets. Thing is heavy and bulky. From a guy that carries his stuff I would have thought you would have pointed that out. At least with the Stanley percolator you can take the basket out and leave the rest in the pot maybe on the simmer mode. Most of the time I just use the percolator to heat the water and use a pour through filter to make the coffee. Fun to play with different ways to make it work. Got to say Stanley products are built to last. I don't think they care how much it weights.

    • @MarkYoungBushcraft

    Hi Mark, just watching this vid for the 2nd time. Two items. First, to take the tight fitting lid off, place your index finger in the pour spout to easily lift the lid off. Second, And I assume this will work w/the GSI cup, I'm using the Walmart $5. 18 oz stainless cup. Easily remove the handles that came w/the press and replace with the handles of the Walmart cup. Because the Walmart handles are horizontal instead of vertical...they are higher and farther away from the flame and therefore should stay a little cooler.They are also farther away from the press body so again, potentially farther away from the heat rising up the sides of the SS body. They will wrap nicely around the press although not as tightly as the originals. The press will not nest inside the Wmt cup so you would have to bring them separately unless already bringing the SS cup. Can't get enough coffee!!!

    • @MarkYoungBushcraft
      @MarkYoungBushcraft  5 лет назад

      I really like the suggestion about changing the handle style. I will give that a try. The problem with my fingers was largely due to the effects of the chemotherapy making them extra sensitive. Thanks for commenting

    I have this and an Aeropress. Since the insert is lighter than the Aeropress I figured it would be a good item to carry, but the cleanup without a sink is a bit of a problem. I use it at home, though. I'm not keen on coffee processes where i can't control the water temp or brew time so no coffee "makers" for me. I need 2 cups a day, so if I'm hanging around home I use the Aeropress twice. If I'm going to be out and about for the day I use this Stanley unit to make 2 cups... drink one and throw one in a vacuum bottle to take with me.
    The lid is overkill with the seals and mine is cracked a bit, so I'll look at a metal lid like you have there. Then I may take it with me if I take another coffee drinker backpacking with me.

    Very enjoyable video presentation. Although it is not anything I would likely use, nicely done ✔✔✔. And the reason for not using it is that I like coffee ☕ and tea ☕ equally. Since I make coffee at home, it's just so much simpler and faster to brew my favorite tea in the woods. Now, if I could just get some real and fresh cream for the tea, life would be grand. But I have found a powdered creamer that tastes fairly good!😀

    • @MarkYoungBushcraft

    • @BingWatcher
      @BingWatcher 6 лет назад

      Mark Young ➡️Interesting idea, as I had not considered using that Stanley pot to brew real tea. ➡️The creamer I have "found" is actually a powdered Whole Milk product. Most powdered milk in non-fat. But this product is pure, full fat, regular milk and reconstitutes very easily. It is called "Nido" and is made by Nestle. It is found in supermarkets and Walmart in either the baby food isle or the Hispanic foods isle. Plus it's quite economical as you only need a small amount per mug. Happy Trails!

    A great coffee pot! I tend to use a cafetière mug or coffee bag when away. Did you say the coffee pot is wider than the standard Stanley cook pot? Shame they didn’t make the coffee insert for the standard pot.

    • @MarkYoungBushcraft
      @MarkYoungBushcraft  5 лет назад +1

      Yes, this is considerably bigger than the Stanley cook pot (assuming we are talking about the smaller I think 750ml one). I don't have the smaller Stanly pot..yet..but I understand a press from most commercial French press will work in it. When I finally get one, I will give that a try. Thanks for commenting

    I was looking at one of these but it is over 30 bucks and I already have the Stanley cook cup.
    I was in IKEA one day and they have a glass coffee press for 10 bucks. I bought it and the press fits perfectly into the cook cup.
    I thought the Stanley cook and brew seemed kind of cheap with the handles.
    Nice review though.

    One thing you did not rate was durability/ruggedness. I love my Aeropress but wonder if it might not crack or break in the rough conditions of the bush; someone dropping an axe on it for example. Do you have any opinions on this?

      Good question John. I can't imagine the AeroPress getting broken but you never know. I have used it in pretty cold temperatures and it held up. I have some permitherine I could try it with. I would want to make sure it would not eat away at the hat material first. Thanks for commenting

    This will nest in the Stanley Mountain Pot without the bowl insert, and practically, if the handle is removed. Is there anything else that this will nest with, such as the Stanley 2 cup Adventure kit or potentially a super-large GSI-style cup that this could nest in? Will this fit in a Condor Water Bottle Bag? I wish Stanley sold this with an additional stainless lid and/or with a Bail.

    • @MarkYoungBushcraft
      @MarkYoungBushcraft  3 года назад +1

      So, I checked with a few different setups. The Cook and Brew will not fit in a GSI mug (or Pathfinder). They are almost identical in diameter with the Stanley a few mils larger. The Stanley Adventure will fit inside up to the handle attachment. A 40oz Nalgene will fit inside with the press part or without. I do store my green cup from the Stanley Adventure set inside the press. Hope this helps

    Nice review and both systems seem to have advantages over each other, Stanley having versatility and aeropress having simplicity.
    Going off course but when I use my pots on a open fire I find I don’t get soot but more tar round the pot and that can make drinking from them a bit unpleasant, is it the wood I’m burning or is it being to close to the flame.

    • @MarkYoungBushcraft
      @MarkYoungBushcraft  6 лет назад

      Glad you enjoyed the review. In my experience, burning wood that is at all wet will leave a tarry residue on pots as will softwoods like pine, spruce, etc. If you can get your fire good and hot it will take care of the moisture. Then either let it die down to coals or pull a few away from the main fire and place your pot over them. Let me know if this helps. Thanks for commenting

    What is wrong with digging a hole and burrying the coffee grounds?

    • @MarkYoungBushcraft
      @MarkYoungBushcraft  2 года назад

      Fair question. While it is true coffee grounds will compost in the woods it is also true that since they did not originate there. They introduce foreign components to the ecosystem and can have a negative impact. One person doing this the impact is minor, but if everyone does this, the impact becomes major. As we all know, Coleman makes affordable, solid stuff that's really intended for car camping. Thus the plastic lid. It's only meant to be used on a gas stove. I don't know if I'd recommend any of their stuff for backpacking, unless that's all you've got, but if you've got kids running around camp, with things getting knocked over, stepped on in the dark etc...they still make ok stuff.

    I have this and have used it a few times. Ive really enjoyed it. And I like the large volume. However, they really should have made an additional SSteel lid for cooking, and have it flat so that it can be well stacked for nesting and packing. That was a real miss. And yes it really does need the additional 4oz measure lines. They could have had an outstanding kit instead of just great. I did have a life for my solo stove that just set on top, not exact fit. I may check out that lid you added, looks like a good find. Thanks.
