  • Alena Jefferson and Zenobia Tikoisuva created this documentary film as part of their Year 13 Media Studies class. This work is worth valuable credits towards NCEA Level 3, while also providing an opportunity to create a piece of art that they can share with class, whanau and the wider school community. This film is a look at the Niuean cultural tradition, Hifiulu. In normal circumstances, this event would have been a mass gathering of family and friends coming together to celebrate Alena's brother, Malachi Jefferson, and his traditional haircutting ceremony. Given the disruption of Covid-19, the family had to be creative and flexible in order to maintain this valued cultural tradition, while also meeting the health and safety requirements of living during a global pandemic.
Thanks to the Jefferson family for allowing us to share their story.'
