Thanks for posting this. I COULD NOT get the air out of my Mach 1's cooling system until I watched this and filled/ vented through the cross connection.
Thank you for the advise. You saved me from pulling the engine back out to get the heads checked. Thanks again,
I’m glad to hear you liked the video!
I'm glad I'm not the only one whose ac/heater dial has trouble staying at full hot. Lol
ha ha
I thought it was just mine. Haha
I was thinking the exact same thing when I saw it. Haha
Danny, did check out your vid. The Lincoln Mark 8 have the same issue with a cross over tube. It is a 1/4" drive required for removal. So, Harbor Freight, Amazon, have an adapter set for an impact hammer. 1/2" to 3/8" and 3/8" to 1/4". You combine those two and use an impact drive, you won't have to worry about breaking a carbon steel socket. Just a little squeeze with the impact hammer drive and it's done. Use some anti-seize when reassembling.
Thanks Danny! This video helped a ton. Anytime I’m about to do any kind of work on my Terminator I always check to see if you have a video on what I’m about to do. Thanks for documenting everything! You the man Danny! 🍻
Cool. I’m glad you enjoy the videos!
Had to replace my radiator yesterday on my 03 cobra, Just a big thanks 😁 your video helped me much! 💕
Thanks Danny. Sons alternator went out and I had to open all this on the mach1. When we reassembled the car we drove it for 45 minutes no issues. Car sat for 8 days and then upon restart began getting very warm
Followed your video for burping and the crossover took a gallon of coolant. Started it and took forever for thermostat to open and circulate. All seems to be fine now. I hope I didn't damage a head of anything
Thank you for your videos Danny!
I just bought a Marauder last week and going through it this weekend. This video helped, just like all of your videos.
poot111111 I’m glad to hear that! Thanks for being a part of the channel. Glad to have you along! The marauder is pretty cool!
@@dannyjohnsonsgarage It's the closet thing I will get to a Cobra with 2 car seats in the back and wife in the passenger seat. I am pretty happy atm.
Thanks for the video!! I used this one and another to help replace my radiator in my 04 mach 1. 👍
Great video. Mind sharing how much coolant I will need after the thermostat change on a 2004 Cobra? More than a gallon?
I believe I used one jug, but maybe buy 2 and plan to return one if not needed
I think it still had electrical, it just died without any sputter. then started up with no problem. Perhaps a crank sensor connection?? How will I know if it is the fuel sensor?? Thanks for your help, I thought you may have experienced this.
Danny I love you !
Is there a full video on how to flush the coolant?
Chris fix has one. Basically buy a bunch of distilled water and keep changing it
i have a 32v in an aviator that just pushes all the coolant out and overheats. all head gasket tests were good. i even had the cap off the resavore and i pulled the plug out of the cross over and it was under pressure...but not in the resavore?. new Tstat new water pump. im gona try your way, then check if the rad is clogged. been fun
If it’s only hot on one side of the system something may be clogged. Check the thermostat to be in correctly
After I burp the cooling system should I let the car cool and then fill up the radiator tank to the fill line? Thanks!
Yes, but make sure it’s on level ground when you fill it to the fill line and not in the air on jack stands or it will over fill
So if I’m doing a complete flush I would need to flush the radiator itself, and the radiator reservoir? And that’s it?
man i cant believe you got that off them are the worst to get off. some cant from the being boogered up so bad
see you got a mac box i haad a class 3 workstation but ended up selling it. it was overkill for my needs made a lick off it too
I broke two ratchets and an adapter on mine. Eventually had to use vice grips to get it off. Chewed everything up pretty bad. Now I just barely snug it back down. It’s not so bad now. Just looks ugly.
The struggle is real with these. I don’t know why ford didn’t make it a 3/4”
Yeah it was a pretty brain dead idea to not make it as simple as the aftermarket plugs.
At least Ford didn’t use a lot of Phillips head screws like Nissan did on my Xterra.
Where did you find that rubber gasket mine keeps ripping them or melting them
question:
Why do you lift the front end ? My car is stock height
Thanks and nice car & video 👍
It further helps with burping making the crossover the high point
danny, i'm doing both aftermarket tanks on my03, what do you suggest to do to prep and fill the new tanks properly ?
ctozzi123 You’ll news to lower the coolant level in both the supercharger system and engine (they are separate) and then fill them. If you don’t drop the level too low it’s a simple fill up and burp as the video shows
Would you recommend gold coolant over green?
Yeah, if it’s the Ford gold it should be better as their upgraded version.
How long do you let the car run with the crossover open before closing everything up? Should you let it get to fully warmed up needle in the middle on the gauge? Should you just let it run from cold start for a few minutes before closing everything? Once my car got the gauge in the middle coolant started flowing out of the open crossover.
It should only run a few minutes from cold. They should get most of the air out and the rest can come out the expansion tank. It’s for the majority of it to get out
@@dannyjohnsonsgarage Tonight I gave it another shot. The front of the car is raised on ramps. Heat on full, idle with coolant about 2 inches in funnel on crossover. Reservoir cap screwed on the whole time.I let it run for 6 minutes. I got some tiny bubbles and a couple small hiccups(not enough to flow out of 3-4inch funnel) I gave it a couple light revs during and a bit of bubbles escaped. I shut the car off and coolant remained in funnel so I sucked 1-2 inches out then closed it up. Should I be good now?
@@joshuashanemarshall It should be close enough to drive around with the heat on and allow it to continue to burp any air from the system. Start it up and feel the hoses to ensure one isn’t cold and the others hot (indicating a blockage like the thermostat being bad). Just watch the gauge as you drive and if it’s goes back and forth a lot it could still have air. Otherwise it should stay constant
Danny i ran into an issue where the funnel placed on the crossover tube started acting like a reservoir lol idk it was weird. i didnt have the car raised in the front. You think that was the issue?
It will do that as the Temp increases and it expands. As long as it was still bubbling
Dan whats is best way to drain the car .. rad drain and thermostate removed?
Yes, lower driver side radiator hose and thermostat. You’ll see it in this video ruclips.net/video/DKb5ldeqXjo/видео.html
My Mach 1 has a block drain on the driver's side. It's directly above the oil pan drain. There's supposed to be one on the passenger's side too, but it's nearly impossible to access.
Hey Danny so I am having trouble getting the air out like this. Keeps overheating and pukes out the reservoir cap the cap is new I do have the metal expansion tanks new thermostat new fan it went like this I bought the car drove it 5.5 hrs home then the next day the fan locked up and it over heated I changed thermostat and fans and bought new cap tried to do this but it keeps pushing it out of the reservoir as I add it to the crossover tube
Let it sit overnight with a funnel full of coolant in the crossover. Maybe pull the thermostat out next to make sure it’s not in backwards or clogging it. Hopefully the head gasket is okay if it overheated ruclips.net/video/dF56SQxvaOQ/видео.html
So I only drained and filled my radiator, didn't flush it and it overflowed out the resivoir a few times then settled. Added more to the level mark and doesn't overflow anymore. Guessing I burped it that way? I stripped out that plastic radiator drain plug at the bottom in the process but managed to get it tightened again. Noticed tonight a small puddle about where the coolant would drip from the plug. Do they come all the way out so we can replace them?
I’ve seen replacement peck cocks (as the plug is called). They strip so easy that I always disconnect the lower radiator hose instead of using it. I would run the car with the heater on full blast and the crossover plug off to make sure it’s fully burped
@@dannyjohnsonsgarage yeah very easy to break. It was hard to turn out the entire way. Same to tighten it. I just kept pressing all my might as I was trying to turn it. Calling Ford in the morning to get a new one. I'll try burping it that way as well. Thanks.
Either I followed this process incorrectly or my expansion tank has a bad cap. I had the car idling with the hood up while I was looking for a vacuum leak and coolant started spewing out from the expansion tank cap!
Try a cap, but if it’s burped properly you might want to look at a water pump (hopefully not a head gasket) ruclips.net/video/qeTTITKctoM/видео.html
Hey Danny by any chance do you have a video on how to install the egr valve on the exact same car you have the yellow one Ihave been struggling with the emission test in illinois thanks I'll wait for your response
I don’t have an actual install, but an explanation video. The key is to have both sides loose or it’s nearly impossible to get on. ruclips.net/video/HzuisxVssX8/видео.html
Thanks alot
Which color coolant are you using
My Mach is pro charged and doesn’t have a spot on the cross over.. what do I do?
Remove the upper radiator hose and fill there. It should still go where the crossover would mount into the cylinder heads
Hmm so you drain the system first then put the new one turn on the car let the ac run for a few minutes and that’s how you burp it correct ?
MrIkillgamers Perform whatever repair needed, then add coolant via the crossover and through the radiator hose (make sure the radiator fills), let run with full HEAT (not a/c) on. That pushes air out of the heater core.
Just did a fan and radiator in my 03 Cobra. Curious about the reservoir- my car is running around 198-210 and I don't recall temps often getting over 190. When my tstat opens, I have 0 coolant in the resevoir. Shouldn't it be holding coolant at all times?
It should be at the full cold line or you still likely have air in the system
Dany, my car sits for a week or 2 before I drive it. I recently had the cooling mode done by a shop. Car runs around 195 200 the hose coming out of the radiator get pretty hard, is this normal. Also I removed the cross over nut and when I start the car coolant shoots out of it. Why is it doing this. Thanks in advance.
A hard and hot line can indicate a blockage. I would next try the thermostat. It will be closed until the engine is warmed up ruclips.net/video/dF56SQxvaOQ/видео.html
Hello Danny, a quick question, my 03 just shut down while driving, no sputter or anything. I pulled over and it turned over but would not crank I waited 5 minutes and it started right up. Any ideas? No codes came up, it has never done that before
When it shut off did you still have electrical power? It could be as simple as a loose battery cable or ground.
Next I’d look into the fuel rail pressure sensor since it might think the car doesn’t have fuel even if the pumps are good. I would watch this video to see if any of the items listed are loose, bad, etc. ruclips.net/video/JvgKGJjAwU0/видео.html
Hey Danny, so I am replacing some hoses and the coolant all together on my 2001 Cobra. Upon my second radiator drain and refill with distilled water I noticed a small leak that comes from the bottom of the engine. It doesn’t reek of coolant, it just smells like water would. Did I do something wrong to cause this?
I would check near where the coolant crossover fill tube goes into the heads on each side to see if it’s leaking there and running down the engine
@@dannyjohnsonsgarage if you’re referring to the two hoses that fit into the metal fittings at the top, then those are bone dry. Connections are good. It’s more toward the back of the engine near where you tend to have some condensation drip except it’s further inside from that puddle. Fluid is clear, more like water than anything.
How many gallons of coolant are needed if I do a complete flush? Also, do you recommend any specific type? I know some came with green/gold. Thanks!
You’ll want to buy several gallons of distilled water, fill it, run it for a few minutes, and drain it. I would buy 3-4 prestone jugs for the final fill. If you are flushing the system the color won’t matter.
@@dannyjohnsonsgarage yeah what color did you use in the video
I have an 04’ Roush stage 3 supercharged
But I found green in mine
I want to flush then use the gold/yellow
@@randallruel7859 As long as you flush it all out you can use gold or yellow
where is the engine temperature coolant sensor on the mach 1
ruclips.net/video/t5AlY7m7yzM/видео.html
Question... my factory overflow tank is almost empty when the car is cold. Then when the car warms up it is full. What is causing that?
Heat expands the liquids. It’s probably a little low. You can try topping it off at the fill line for cold
Will this work the same way for 1999-2001 N/A cobra? Thanks dan
Yes
Ok wait, I saw the coolant filled on the crossover pipe but what am I supposed to do once I turn off the car? Mine looked just like yours did but once I was done and turned off the car all the coolant went away and saw nothing
Continue to fill it. The expansion tank should also be full in the end (up to the line). It’s circulating past the fill plug area so you’ll see it but it sounds like it’s not full
@@dannyjohnsonsgarage would it be a good idea to add coolant in the cross over pipe while someone else turns off the car so it doesn’t go completely dry? Because from my understanding coolant in the crossover should still be visible even after I turn off the car?
My tanks, and radiator and hoses were completely drained and then put on after some work was done to my car. my mechanic did not fill it from the cross-over. He filled it from the expansion tanks. I am having trouble with my fan turning on and I am afraid that I may have air in my system. I don't want to run the car too long because I don't want to cause damage. What do you recomend. Do i have to drain the system again or should i just fill it from the cross over and let it run and add more as it goes down.
You don’t need to drain the system, but it is most likely not full. Follow the video- Put the front of the car in the air in jack stands, remove the crossover and fill it there. Run the car and put the heater on full blast. Just don’t run the car more than a few minutes
@@dannyjohnsonsgarage so should I let it cool down and repeat as I do this since I can’t run it for more than a few minutes or should I fill it while it’s off and then run it to let air come out
My crossover plug isn’t coming off so I filled the top radiator hose, when I started driving the heat is still fluctuating and staying near hot. Is there a better way to burp the car without the crossover. Maybe using the reservoir?
The air might work itself out via the expansion tank. Otherwise I’d try to add at the radiator hose again holding the hose as high as you can get it. Make sure the heat is on full blast while doing so
Ya I drove it again, it was getting hot again, then went straight to the middle of the gauge. I think it is good now but I’ve been scared to drove it far
So when I shut the car off the coolant in the cross over tube drops significantly. Should I put more coolant in the cross over tube till its full again or install the cap and go?. Cause if I do fill up the cross over tube again and then start the car back up, all that coolant I just added into the cross over tube shoots out.
Being the high point, it’s probably ok to not be full to the top. It shouldn’t take too much more coolant after that, and watch the reservoir to make sure it doesn’t over fill when you add to the cross over.
@@dannyjohnsonsgarage Thanks for the reply. I'll have to mess with it some more because I do believe the reservoir is higher than it should be now.
What if my heater core AC unit is removed from the car? will that have any effect on bleeding the system? My car will have no AC or heater core in it. Thanks
Disregard! i see that you mentioned something in another comment. great videos Man, very helpful
Yeah, less to burp actually. Should be easier. Good luck
When you get that dumb plug out...you can buy a good quality plug specifically made for the Cobra cross over pipe...has an o-ring...and 3/4 hex....😀😀
Should there be coolant in the crossover tube when the car is not running and cold ?
Yes, some. It’s also the high point so expect a small amount of air
@@dannyjohnsonsgarage so when I open the crossover cap its normal for it to be completely dry for the eye to see?
@@Spooled.by.matty. yeah, if it’s ice cold. It shouldn’t take much to see coolant if you added it
@@dannyjohnsonsgarage ok thanks
How can I put super charger on my 4.6
There are kits like tork tech and vortec, procharger.
This is my brothers ruclips.net/video/mxYigJmVRRI/видео.html
is it the same process on a 2014 GT?
It should be the same but I’m not sure where the plug would be on a 5.0. My G35 has one built into a hose
My heater core went bad in my car so I bypassed the line and I don’t have any heat. So how can I burp the system out without any heat?
Damn left ya hanging. Just like ya would if ya had heat but don't turn the AC on at all. The only reason to run the heat is to fully circulate, u have no core so you are fully circulating without it.
@@alwayslikedeath4472 all good bro, I got it fixed that day
Was just stating to yank a chain. Hope you still have the ride.
@@alwayslikedeath4472 I sadly sold it since I’m in college, trying to get it back right now actually ahahaha
What’s the proper name for that bleeder screw?
Coolant cross over tube bleed screw
Thanks bro!!!!!
The previous owner rerouted the heater core, would not being able to run the heater change anything?
Señior_Sam! You run the heater to make sure coolant flows into the heater core. If the lines no longer go u to the firewall on the passenger side there is no need to run the heater. It’s just to make sure it flows into the heater core to burp it
That looks like a PITA to get off lol
Danny I’ve got an 03 with a KB 2.8. Just turned 50k miles and it has an upgraded inter cooler tank. I’m the second owner. Should I be looking into changing the coolant due to the miles?
It never hurts to put new coolant in. The supercharger tank is a separate system than the engine. Some people do a different color in each to ever know what’s leaking
@@dannyjohnsonsgarage cool deal. I am still full to the brim and haven’t noticed any heating issues. When I do open the cap and peek into the reservoir for the stock engine expansion tank, I noticed some spotty brown build up on the plastic walls above the fluid level.
@@caseindaplace Some of that is probably oil from the oil cooler. The gaskets aren’t the best and tend to leak
I did that and it's gets hot after y can some body tell me what am doing wrong
I would take the hose off that goes to the radiator and pour fluid in so it’s draining directly into the radiator to make sure the radiator is full
Dose it matter what Thermostat I have
@@nancyparra5017 No, unless it’s defective
Am going to try what you said put it on the house and thank you sir
Is this process absolutely necessary? The crossover on my Mach 1 is basically welded shut because I suspect the previous owner used loctite...Could I just fill it thru the reservoir and keep adding with the car on as it fills the rest of they system?
You will need to fill it through the hose that is connected to the crossover. If you only add coolant in the expansion tank it will not fill the system. The crossover on my mach 1 would also not budge so I just filled it at the radiator hose that goes to the crossover and it has been fine
@@dannyjohnsonsgarage Will do! Thank you for the very quick reply, and all these helpful videos, I don't know what I'd do without them!
