I am so glad, as I will be doing a few more. I am trying to record a bulk of stories in the next few weeks, so I have sufficient content for the long promised Patreon channel!

I think I may have said in the past that I love trees, so it was great to be able to do a story that focuses entirely on one, even if a malevolent one.

@@TheBlackDogChronicles Honestly, the concept of squirrel sized venomous spiders infesting a place like that, tapping on the widows and scrabbling to get in to bite you, gave me the hebbie-jebbies. You tell it so well, Thank you.

I'm familiar with this story, having read it and heard it before, but I've never heard it like this! Excellent work. Thank you so much. I was spellbound. 😱😖

Do you know, this encourages me greatly. I worry sometimes about the content, that it is too well known and that I will fail to make it fresh for people. So, I am greatly rallied by your words. Thank you.

Far too many. Many more than I intended. This was supposed to be a "quick creation"; but high winds blowing in the neighbourhood, making piping around the house sing like haunted hounds and wailing B*nsh**s did not make for a non-swearing at every take that didn't go right - recording!

Spoiilers to follow, scroll back up if you're not done.
As someone who lives not too far from the area mentioned in this story... and within walking distance of a witch's tree, this tale rings slightly portentous. There's also a lot that rings familiar in this tale, from what I've heard of the witch-hunting hysteria of old to the potential for veiled vindictiveness or superstitious presumption that it could cause. Like with many a good horror story, the mundane walks with the supernatural menace not far behind. There were some bits that seemed strangely wholesome, like the instant goodwill between successive generations of two families. It doesn't last long, however. Another thing I liked was that unlike so with so many other tales, there's no hint of ambiguity, no possibility of coincidence, the curse is real and the witch took an active (albeit deathless) hand in her vengeance, which itself becomes excessive and thus evil, targeting those who had no hand in her doom. I could go on, linking fancy unto fancy and all that but suffice it to say there's a great deal that's intriguing about this story and which leaves the listener thinking, which itself is all the easier when the telling is by yourself.
Your various voices seemed particularly memorable this time round, and as always, all else combines to make for a gripping and frightful story. It's become pretty much a cliché of mine to say as much at this point.
    Quality work as ever.

I tried looking up what a Suffolk accent was like in the period, and I found it sounded (more to my ear) much more like a West Country sound. I attempted to bring a bit more of the current elderly generation's inflections, but I don't think I quite did it. I would have liked longer to work on this one. As it was, we had high winds in our area for the past two weeks, so it has been difficult to record. Whereas I tend to get a story read in a morning (with all the mistakes I make along the way) this time it took three days, with all of the disturbing sounds of the wind. It was like my own local witch was getting back at me for past regressions (most likely the sexism of my young life!). I found a recording of the bells at Bury St Edmunds cathedral, but in the end I did not include it. I rather wish I had now, now that I know you live nearby. Perhaps you might have recognised them.
