I went to the 2014 Belgian grand prix, the first season of the new quiet engines. We couldn't actually hear the F1 cars when the television helicopter flew over us. I just remember feeling incredibly disappointed. I don't think I was the only one either, on the first lap of the race as they were coming round, the crowd started to cheer, as you'd expect them too, but suddenly everyone went into an awkward silence when we all realised the cheering was completely drowning out the noise of the cars. I actually caught the moment on video with my phone... I guess I should upload it at some point... The GP2 cars were much, much louder.
LukewMorgan bullshit. I was there too and the cars' sound was easily hearable. I liked it not to use earprotection. I had to use it last year and the sound is slightly different in real life. and btw, I come for F1 racing, not the engines in F1...
Thomas van Asperen When I watch F1 for the racing, I watch it at home, on TV... Where I can actually see the racing. When you go there live, all you can see is 2, maybe 3 corners of the track. You don't "see" a lot of racing when you go there. So when I go live, I go for the atmosphere, and the sound used to be a very big part of that. These new F1 engines now lack the glorious sound they once had, it's totally ruined the live experience for me. The fact you no longer have to wear ear protection says a lot, and you can call bullshit as much as you want, helicopters flying overhead and cheering crowds still drown out the sound of modern F1 engines because they're too bloody quiet.
LukewMorgan I dont think it really affects the atmosphere. i Mean, im not only coming for the sound! I am there to support the drivers, to see every little thing live. everything that you normally see on tv or on pictures. its like hearing a lot of Paris, the only thing is that the Eiffel Tower is gone. of course its a shame, but it is still an amazing experience of you finally got there. and if the engine sound really affects your thoughts about F1, then you should follow another sport. your no longer a true F1 fan then. Somewhere deep within I pray these motors come back in some form…doesn’t matter if they’re powered by biofuel or if they’re fully hybridized, just bring the sound back man…
Never really cared about the current sounds anyway. I miss the old mixed sounds of 3500cc V8s, V10s and V12s all on the circuit at the same time, and cars that actually looked different from one another. No rev limits. No development freezes. None of that bullshit. F1 today is little more than an over-hyped spec series.
unfortunately we can never go back to that era. F1 has massive budgets and the speed of change moves so damn fast. Unlimited development would be a disaster for everything but engineering geeks. Would be boring to have cars finishing minutes apart. We need very specific constraints in the rules and these amazing engineers still find ways to set their machines apart!
I went to the last race of the V8's in 2013 when Seb won in USA at COTA, i remember hearing these cars from almost 5 to 6 miles away, completely unbelievable sound and power. I will never forget the sound of those cars resonating with bones in my body.

I am so disappointed with FIA and what they have done to OUR beloved Formula One. The current crop of cars sound like moaning Honda Accords with fart-can mufflers. The rules are ridiculously overbearing - can you imagine an NHRA Top Fuel drag racer being penalized for using more than five engines in a season, or for changing transmissions too many times? The rules prohibit engines revving over a certain speed, but they can't even reach that RPM because of fuel flow restrictions! The FIA is taking the "sport" out of motor-sports. As fans, WE should have the final say... and we actually do, if we vote with our wallets by not buying tickets to F1 events, complaining to sponsors, and that's only scratching the surface of what we could do!
I regret that i never had a chance to enjoy these sounds in person. Im in the US and plan to go to Texas GP next year. It will be my first f1 race. I want to hear the obnoxious scream of a F1 V8 engine blasting by me. Oh well,....

F1 hasn't been the same since all the concentration on "reliability" and (ha ha), "reducing costs". Much of the excitement came from never being sure whether your favourite driver would make it to the finish if they were leading comfortably or whether their engine would go up in a cloud of smoke. And the press on regardless spirit, where even if that did happen in qualifying, you could just hop into the spare car or bong another engine in and go out and claim pole. All this nonsense now about being penalised for using the spare car and what have you.

Most likely straight 6 hybrid. Would be great if they gave the teams freedom on which engine type they could choose with certain limitations like rev limit, fule flow rate and must have hybrid system. Keep ERS and dump DRS!
That's not funny Austan. They've already ruined the sport by adding those stinking electric motors and batteries and turbos and worst of all roll bars this year. They really must have a bunch of morons running this sport. Who ever heard of a Formula One car weighing 1600 lbs?
People were saying same things about diesel Le Mans cars back in the days when they first appeared. And the speed shut them all up. It will be ok guys. They now hit only about 11 000 rpm in the race while they can go up to 15 000 rpm. When they solve all the problems it will sound a bit better. Speed is the emotion
not this year bro, not this year with the fuel-flow "nerf" and the engine lifecycle of 6? is it? races they need to make on each trolthefans-unit of theirs.
You can make any engine fast. NA, turbo, diesel, electric it doesnt matter its purly the regulations that dictates how fast the engines will be not the typ of engine. They could totally run these 2014 engines at 15000rpm and produce 1000bhp+ but theres a fuelflow limit preventing them from doing it.
I know the V6 Turbos are going to sound even worse so I shouldn't really complain but I'm of the opinion that the V8's only sounded reasonably good before 2009 when they introduced the KERS system and the 18,000rpm limiter and ruined the natural torque of the engine, more noise is made under breaking now then during acceleration you have to go back to the early 2000's when they where using V10's with no rev restrictions or cheap power boosting systems like KERS and DRS to hear when they blow your head off at full throttle, they sound rather flat now still I dread to think what next years cars will sound like, my Dyson hoover will probably have more of a ring to it lol. Bring back the days of the V10's PLEASE or even better V12's and stop this enviro crap, F1 was never designed to help the environment and in my opinion it should stay that way; dirty, smelly, and unashamedly LOUD!!!
V8 engines sucked, they weren't that powerful (relatively speaking) and they lacked torque as well. They were also several years old by the time this video was filmed. I miss the old 3.0 V10's and the older 3.5 litre engines but the shitty 2.4 V8's can go to hell.

Just wait till their 2 cylinder engines
and two strokes :D
Braaaaaaaap
That's not funny Austan. They've already ruined the sport by adding those stinking electric motors and batteries and turbos and worst of all roll bars this year. They really must have a bunch of morons running this sport. Who ever heard of a Formula One car weighing 1600 lbs?
2 cylinder 0.8cc hybrid engine, twinturbo, eco-gender friendly, it develops 100bhp more than the last season, so it's fine
*sighs*
hahaha
Lmp1 cars have a v4 i think
I came all the way from 2021 to tell you that YES, WE MISS IT ):
The 2014 season, FIA’s biggest mistake yet
No problem! Thank you so much!
Preach
December 2018 and still missing it. I've been watching this on a daily basis. V8 please come back we love you :(
Most people miss the noise of these engines. I don't miss the measly power outputs and shitty top speeds from these old engines.
+DougVF1 Measily power output?
V8 engines sucked, they weren't that powerful (relatively speaking) and they lacked torque as well. They were also several years old by the time this video was filmed. I miss the old 3.0 V10's and the older 3.5 litre engines but the shitty 2.4 V8's can go to hell.
2021, still a V6, still missing the V8
0:19 "slow down you twat" pahahahahahha
Lmaoooo 😂
It’s 2020 and I still have to come back to this vid to remember the sound it’s beautiful 😍
