      I actually think it’s sometimes annoying and detrimental to the format. I don’t say that as if I don’t like her having joy…but rather that she seems over the top excited about EVERYTHING. And that seems inauthentic, or else it’s just an opinion that simply isn’t that valuable since she doesn’t seem to exercise much skepticism. Rather…just EVERYTHING is always the best.

    Why are these adventures inspired by Lewis Carroll? Isn't there any other fantasy writer?

  • @alarin612
    @alarin612 3 года назад +4

    I think this throws into sharp contrast how they built a game centered on combat and pretend it's something else. 90% of the rules are for combat, but they write articles and give interviews saying there are "Three Pillars" of adventure in D&D. More like one pillar and two poorly designed decorative buttresses. The martial classes in this game already have limited-to-no ways to interact with the exploration and social parts of D&D; spellcasters just barely moreso, as the vast majority of spells are about combat. People who like fighters and barbarians are gonna be bored as hell in this adventure - not because people like that prefer combat necessarily, but because the rules don't put anything interesting on their character sheets to deal with this kind of thing.

    • @alarin612
      @alarin612 3 года назад

      @@dziooooo Dude if *I* have to introduce new tools, either by coming up with them myself or combing the internet, wtf am I paying WOTC for?
      Your other comment is a trap. If the wizard can do something cool in every situation, and probably be more effective in fighting than the FIGHTER, you made a bad game. The fighter doesn't even have interesting things to do in combat. Just ... hit more. The most boring thing in DnD is rolling to hit and doing damage and the fighter just gets more of it.

    • @alarin612
      @alarin612 3 года назад

      @@dziooooo First of all, you're right. I DO have more fun with other, better games, because you can have just as much good RP in a game with GOOD character design as you can in one like 5e. Second, it's no fix if they make new rules with these books (which you have to keep praying money for, of course) but still have badly imbalanced class playability. Because third, whether or not the goal was to have wizards who are better in combat than fighters, that's what 5e did. Sitting around waiting for 5e to slowly get fixed when there are better games out there? Seems pretty pointless.

    • @alarin612
      @alarin612 3 года назад

      @@dziooooo It's no weirder than paying 90 bucks for a game that takes three books, in it's fifth edition, made by the oldest TTRPG company out there and thinking, "Well, it's not perfect out the gate. I'm sure they'll fix it in the next 30 dollar book." I'd rather spend an hour to point out that the emperor has no clothes than all my money waiting for these mediocre designers to finish patting themselves on the back and make something that doesn't need a constant stream of expensive patches.

    • @michellejean11
      @michellejean11 3 года назад

      @@BeastMasterNeil It signals a change in the direction of development but what I really want to understand is why people want to play a heroic fantasy game without the heroic aspect?

    • @thunderdragonish
      @thunderdragonish 3 года назад +2

      @@michellejean11 because most people aren’t. They’re adding aspects like whimsy, mystery, intrigue, or horror to their heroic fantasy games. The addition of those elements doesn’t detract from the heroic aspect of the game. I have run Curse of Strahd completely through for three different groups. While I gave my best efforts to play up the deadly horror themes of the adventure - isolation, alienation, mistrust, betrayal, temptation, corruption, unknown dangers, overwhelming odds - the players still won, saved innocents from horrific fates, broke curses, won over stalwart allies, spat in the face of an overpowering villain, stormed his castle, and ended his reign of terror. Throughout the adventure, they were never anything other than heroes - even more so than in any other adventure I have run *because of* the horror-themed elements of the story. In a “traditional” heroic fantasy game mirroring Arthurian legend, filled with chivalrous knights and acts of valor, the heroes are just another shiny bauble against a glittering backdrop. Take that same bauble and pin it against a dark backdrop, and it will shine like never before. Storytelling, like any other art medium, thrives on contrast. You should give it a try sometime.
