Okay this game is a nightmare, and so far I will say out of all the SNES shmups I've cleared on the hardest setting, this one stands high above them all. It probably doesn't look that hard from the video, but once you play it you'll figure out quite fast how ridiculous and rage-inducing this game is.
It takes checkpoints to a new and sadistic level by sending you all the way back to the start of the stage when you die. Even the arcade versions weren't that brutal.
A single mistake in stage 6 or 7 on loop 2 (pro) is pretty much a game over, and 50 minutes down the toilet. Now try having that happen to you about 20 times before you clear the game. Now have your recording hardware malfunction and that replay gets lost. Now you have to play it for another 20 hours before you clear it. That was my world for the last month or so. Игры
Some people complained about the slow down in this game. Bro, that's what kept you alive xD
Those slow downs saved me so many times
As someone who spent enough time in the game to beat it, I can't agree enough with you.
Oh my god, this game used to give me nightmares in my sleep on some of those stages. You made it look very easy. Awesome job!
Easily one of the hardest, most unforgiving games on the system. The worst is the frequent slow-down, that suddenly ”released” into normal game speed and catching me off.guard and throwing off my flow. I never beat this game on higher than Normal. If I actually HAD beaten in on Hard only to find out I had to do an even higher difficulty level before I could see the full ending, I would probably had thrown the cartridge out the window. We're talking high levels of frustration here people.
Other than that, its a an absolutely beautiful, almost sublime game. It was the first SNES game i ever bought (discounting Super Mario World that was included with the console). I remember trying it in the store and was amazed by not only the crisp graphics but also the music. Was used to Sega Genesis’ crapass tincan hamradio sound quality and was totally blown away when the guy raised the volume on their sound system and the whole game store was electrified by crystal clear rhythms of slapbase and symph-hits.
I just opened neon-colored nylon wallet ('cause it was 1991 and I was 15) and handed him my money. I had to have this game, had to be part of this amazing new "thing". LOL.
Awesome memories from a now close to middle aged guy. Still have the ripped OST in my playlist.
I actually find the slowdowns very helpful, because they actually give you much more time to react to all the crap on the screen.
It would've been almost impossible if there were no slowdowns at all anywhere.
@@Peter_1986 and someone made a mod that removes the slowdowns. That person is crazy
I envy you man, I was only 4 in 1991, I discovered this game around 1999 , but also only played on normal, I not really a masochistic type XD. But the music still rocks...
when I was younger, I played this game once a week, every time we visited my grandma, because my uncle always brought his SNES (I did not have one). Took me a couple of years of playing for a couple of ours but one day, and one day only, I could beat it on Pro. Those were good times when beating a game required skill and hard work :')
Thank you for avenging me me on this game that sucked my soul back then!!!
Awesome gameplay !!! I'm a fan
That's truly insane... how you did this I really have no idea... and I watched the video! This game is very hard, even on the low difficulty level.
The slowdowns actually helped his game. Was one of my first Super Nintendo games which I still have.
Damn I was 11 when my parents bought me this game!?! I loved this game. The music, graphics and gameplay were all excellent
Stages 1, 4, and 6 are original to Super R-Type. Stages 2, 3, 5, and 7 were borrowed from R-Type II. The song titles of each stage are:
Stage 1 "Solo Sortie"
Stage 2 "Counterattack '91"
Stage 3 "As Wet as a Fish"
Stage 4 "Submerging Tital"
Stage 5 "Dream of Labyrinth"
Stage 6 "R-Dance"
Stage 7 "National Anthem of Bydo Empire"
I never understood how the BYDO could have a national anthem
These aren't real song titles, they were fabricated by a SNES music ripping group. The songs in Super R-Type have no real titles.
@@Despatche but these titles are mentioned during the credits, check @56:30
Either these titles are legitimate or atleast these have existed ever since this game was translated into English.
I love the boss music in this game so much. Doesn't sound like much at first and then it ramps up the pressure...
Just so everyone's aware, stage 5 is part of R-Type Final 2's DLC. It looks amazing, too. And Laius is batshit insane just like in this game, lmao
Good work pal! I'm studying every movement you are doing. Nice game, soundtrack and insane difficulty. One of my snes favorite games.
Congrats!
I completed pulstar from neo geo. Almost 50 minutes of no miss playthrough. I realize this game is worst. But practically the same hell than the another, due the lack of upgrades. Even with checkpoints after dying. Two loops? Wow man! You are my hero!.
Thanks for the comments! When I was clearing all of the SNES shmups on the highest difficulty I found Super R-Type to be the hardest. Dying in the last 2 stages of the second loop is the worst, pretty much unrecoverable at that point. Good luck!

I'm a firm believer now anything this possible i remember playing this hard ass game back in 95 i got it from a friend of mind i put this in super nes thinking i gotta dope space shooter man i played the first level to the 3rd level this game give me nightmare's and i never bet this game to this day .... I thank you for this video
when I was a kid I played Super R Type and Darius Twin on SNES a lot. great memories sigh
Good job Super R Type 👌👍
I just 1CC'd R-Type final 2. After seeing this video again, I see that Final 2 is cake walk in comparison to this. I don't think I'd ever have the mental capacity to do this game lol.
That charged attack on the bosses is so OP!
This run is Unbelievable... and that game looks SO good, but I'd never seen too much of it lol
Awww the feelings when I was playing my first third party game snes game in 1991! Minus the slowdowns!
interesting. had nO idea about the safe spot on the stage 6 boss :o
gOod ass run, dude
Good job 👍
Beautiful 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
19:34 the most fire track on this game lol
The whole track was fire Imo
Finally..... Some good product placement....😏🔥🔥
This game is a lot better than the original R-Type II, but the lack of checkpoints make this game a nightmare to play, lol.
I am currently playing this game for the first time, and on Hard mode, lol.
I have struggled for days and I have been able to make it to the boss on stage 4, although I always die there.
But the stage itself is very easy (at least compared to stage 3), so I can make it to him without any problems.
I remember not being able to beat this as a kid. gj.
Respect
BTW, epic final boss battle.
El puto amo. Qué nostalgia macho
There is beating a game by continuing, but there is conquering a game when you can do it in one credit. That sense of accomplishment isn't the same if continues are abused, it's there, but doesn't feel quite as exhilarating as 1 crediting or 1 life-ing a shmup or any difficult old school game. I remember doing it years ago on Gradius 3 SNES, I had beaten the game before in a few credits, felt good, but when I finally did it in a continue, it felt almost orgasmic. I had finally conquered a game that many times beat me up and spit me out till I learned it (happened with Bayou Billy too, a notoriously difficult game on NES).
As for this game, it always put me to shame, even more so with R-Type 3, I own both and should practice on both, but time is not much of an option I have these days despite the fact I continue to gather more and more old games in my game collection
(legit games, don't count ROMS, which I have many, unless it's something off PSN or VC). Got R-Type 3 in the nick of time, a copy of it was $10 when I bought it, it's way more now.
***** Thank you.
This game were a torment for me, even an a kind of a exorcisim for my self. My Demon even they cryed a lot. But you are a true hero. This game is too easy after all? NOOOOOOO !!!!!
フォースの使い方がめっちゃうめえ!
Great running without a single k.o!!!!!
Great Game!
The second stage is iconic for this game!
The second stage kinda looks like the first stage from the original "R-Type" arcade game.
Was a long time ago, but I don't remember the console slowing down so much during the game. Looks like it's playing at 15fps!
真エンディング見れるんだなぁ(超難易度は不可避)
Cool and nice skills! However, the boss health balance seems all out of whack. These guys melted before they could show off their moves. lol I feel like they went overboard with it in the opposite direction in R-Type 3.
Try playing Stage 7 on Hard _without_ any additional powerups from earlier stages.
You need exceptional skills to be able to pull that off.
This is what almost everyone will have to go through, since they _will_ die on Stage 7.
I've done that after losing on the final boss (pro difficulty), the spider enemies have very specific spawn points and directions of movement so with the right positioning it's possible to recover and save a "run" just barely.
I recently beat this game and I share your sentiment. Never played a game more rage inducing after GnG series.
I wanted to ask, can you recover after dying in stage 6? I never recover after dying in that stage because the power-ups placement is especially cruel.
It's possible on lower difficulty but I could never do it consistently on pro. It was usually a game over.
Another great SNES shmup run. I only 2ALL this one starting on normal setting...Pro mode is really impressive. Great f***ing skills as usual ! now, R-Type III ?
TBYVGS BOS Thanks dude, this one really took a lot out of me, took several weeks with many, many failed runs on loop 2 stage 6 & 7. I'm currently playing Biometal, then I will probably go on to R-Type III.
Damn man you are a shump god, i'm sure if I look at your channel it's already finished every snes shump. Do you take requests or no? And yeah super r type is a game I just can't get by. It took me 3-4 hours just to beat r type 3 (mainly because of that stupid spinning boss and lazer maze).
I've done 1CC for every SNES shmup released in the US. All the videos are on this channel. I've thought about taking requests but my time is very limited right now so it might be hard to get to them. What did you have in mind?
do you have a saturn console? or emulator? theres a decent amount of good shmups on that. the cho aniki games are interesting. but if you have limited time lately dont worry too much about it
One of the Nick arcade video challenges
i remember beating this game at age 10.
Good ole days
Had no idea the game had credits after professional level... damn game is evil.
真EDで前作っぽいBGMになるのがニクい演出だね
You can try patched SA-1 version and play it once again.
Interesting, I wonder if that will make it easier or harder. Honestly the slowdown "slingshots" are one of the big reasons you get killed in this game.
What type of controller were you using? It can’t have been the stock one… but if it was, you are a (capitalized) Legendary Badass!
It was either a stock controller or the snes ascii pad, I don't remember exactly.
wait so double charging the shot 1 shots all bosses in the early stages ? damn
Manage to breeze through the game on Novice mode, then i tried Normal Mode and the game suddenly become very hard
I've never beaten this game. And I've beaten the original Ninja Gaiden trilogy in a single run with no deaths.
The last couple stages in this game are absolutely ridiculous if you play on Hard mode.
There are so many enemies and projectiles everywhere that it becomes more of a test of your reflexes than about learning strategies for each section.
@@Peter_1986 no way the hard mode can be beat unless you are insanely quick
@@joeygonzo
I managed to make it to the last stage on Hard Mode a while ago, but each individual stage took several days to beat. I never really beat the final stage, though.
on Super NES europe Version we had not the infinite continues. Makes it near impossible to practise the later levels.
That sounds strange for me... I have lived in Spain always and my aunt had the game and I could continue in stage 5 as 6 as much as I wished. At least in novice difficulty.
I left my European SNES switched on for days the first time I beat this game. Never would've made it without all those continues lol
WTF @ 18:30? Is this a glitch or is this a TAS?
41:45 POW armor: *boinkboinkboinkboink*
*I feel bad for the four R-Types that were rescued by the hero and sacrificed their lives to beat the final boss.*
Wait wait... why did the boss explode at 25:25? Was a save state used then spliced up to that point? I didn't see the death blow.
Likewise, anyone else bugged by the following "brown" fire and explosions? >___o
+Jinzo Clash The boss with automatically die after a certain amount of time. I was basically just farming them for points until they die.
hardest snes game for me
damn i remember completing this as a kid on novice
Novice is about as hard as the hardest difficulty in most other games.
Even Novice can be challenging since one death and you are sent back to the start
Phalaynx is a similar and good game
18:29 Is this a cheating run or does the boss not actually kill you if you're in that corner?
The top left corner is a safe spot, even though the sprite overlaps, the hitbox of the ship does not actually collide. Also, none of my runs are cheated.
This is just like… Axelay
I get the no-death....but what does the no-miss mean?
D Bee it means the same thing.
If there were no cheats how was the Stage 6 boss able to fly through you without you dying? Impressive run, no doubt. With an asterisk next to it. Pretty sus
Because the hit box of the boss is not the entire sprite.
A great game, but a bit of a let down technically given the power of the SNES. Early on in the console's life, I suppose. But sprite flicker and slowdown that often (with so little on screen) is something you'd expect on the NES
I consider slowdowns to be an advantage, because they generally happen when you are swarmed by enemies and projectiles, which gives you a better chance to react to everything.
It's kind of like having Smart Slow-Motion activated in "Perfect Dark" for the N64.
IIRC, Super R-Type was released alongside the SNES.
Not a launch title, bit definitely in the launch year window.

Enemies are more aggressive, move faster, shoot faster, and have more health, especially some of the bosses.

Yes, it's a safe spot.
@@PEG Weird, lol. thx!

Very cool game and very well played. Shame the console (and the emulators) slow down so much when there is a lot on screen, this game would have been even better without that!
There is a ROM hack that takes the slowdown out of the game, trust me, you'll be asking for it back as the game is even more merciless.

The enemy sprite is larger than its hitbox. Go try it out.

how come he skips over all the "s" power ups? s for speed?
nvm i googled it. players avoid picking up too many speed boosts because the ship gets too hard to maneuver in cramped spaces; most players opt to get 2 or 3 boosts only.

I have recorded videos of beating Stage 6 and 7 on Pro, starting with NO weapons on my youtube channel, because your comments in your description box have made me kinda mad.
There is many youtube videos where this game is beaten on Pro: All of them abuse the overly powerful Ring Laser for the entire game, making it look like this is the only way that people can beat this game.
I have read more than once that people say it's impossible to finish this game after you died on Stage 6 or 7 and that it is "so unfair" that you get sent to the beginning of the stage when you die.
Bullshit. Many shoot-em ups , such as the Gradius Series and even the Original R-Type games are ruined by very unfair checkpoints: You restart at the tough middle or end of a stage with no weapons and you have virtually no chance to continue. In particular, consider the famous Stage 7/Stage 15 of the Turbografx-16 R-Type: If you make it until after the checkpoint and die, it's Game Over, you cannot recover.
In Super R-Type, they were generous, this problem does not exist: You start at the beginning of a level, giving you the opportunity to get some Power Ups before the harder middle or end parts of the stages.
Not to mention: In Super R-Type, you have unlimited continues. Let that run slowly off your tongue: UN-LI-MI-TED CONTINUES!! It literally cannot get more generous than that in a Classic Video Game. Once a stage is done, it's DONE. You don't have to go back to Stage 1 after dieing, which is rage-inducing, mind numbing and repetitive, and which means that you lose progress. This bullshit does NOT happen in Super R-Type, it's a fair game, where difficulty comes from genuine challenge instead of bullshit like sending you back to Stage 1, which makes you lose motivation and time.
I really don't understand why so many people criticize the game for the fact that you restart at the beginning of a Stage when you die. Even you, Pegboy. You have beaten fucking Phalanx on Funny difficulty. Super R-Type should be a joke for you, yet even you complain and call it ridiculous. Am i really the only one who sees all the good points about Super R-Type? Unlimited Continues and no terrible mid-level checkpoints.
Super R-Type is super awesome and i want the world to know that!
+Fatboy890 Thanks for the response, there are a bunch of issues I want to address:
1) Using continues invalidates your run by resetting your score to zero. If you are not familiar with the concept of a 1 credit clear I think you should probably read up on it. In essence, if you cannot clear the game on the original credit (without using continues), you have not beaten the game. This is the gold standard for any serious shmup player. When I'm playing, if I run out of lives, it's a game over, and I restart from scratch.
2) When I talk about this game being the hardest on the system, it factors #1 above into account. Sure, if I had unlimited lives/continues, I can recover on any stage in this game on any difficulty given enough tries (And I have done it for the record). But can you do it consistently enough to survive the entire game without continuing when you get a maximum of 6 lives?
Pegboy By definition, if you see the Credits, you have beaten the game. Doing it without continues is merely a completion with certain restrictions. If you complain about a game just because it is "hard to beat without continues" then that is honestly not a valid complaint. The game gives you unlimited continues. Might as well use them. Beating the game with a highscore or something like that is a challenge that you merely put to yourself. You basically complain "i am making the game harder by not allowing any continues. Oh, but then it's frustrating as hell"... well no crap that's obvious. That is your fault then, not the game's fault however.
+Fatboy890 2-ALL means 2 loops complete without continues, unlimited continues doesn't forgive a (slightly) poor design of the game.
The fact that many older STGs are hard to recover is common because they didn't want you to recover, they wanted you to drop in another quarter and start over.
+Pete Hahn (HAN) I do know all of that. Still, i can't understand why you would criticize a game just because it is difficult to "2-ALL" it. If you have unlimited continues but restart on purpose and then complain that it's hard, then it's your own freaking fault. Sounds wimpy too, if you only like a game when it's not too hard to "2-ALL" it. And i mean, just watch this video. The video creator mentioned in his previous comment that "2-ALL" is the "golden standard" of all Shoot 'em Up players. But just watch this video. To achieve "2-ALL", he abuses the most powerful weapon and blasts the living shit out of every opponent... this might be impressive to n00bs, but i think recovering in a hard stage is way more impressive.
+Fatboy890 If doing a 2-ALL on hard is so easy why don't you sit down and actually try it? You have no idea how hard it is unless you can actually do it. I can clear any stage in this game starting with no weapons, and I can say for a fact that clearing the entire game without continuing is much harder than grinding away at a single stage with infinite lives until you beat it once. Feel free to "abuse" whatever weapons you want.
Recovering in a hard stage is impressive, but it's not nearly as impressive if you have infinite lives to try and do it.
the older r-type and rtype II arcade games looked better than the snes "super" r-type; this game looks very bland in comparison
Considering this game is a Frankenstein of R-Type 1 and 2, you could hardly call the look of it bland.
@@Bloodreign1 nope it is bland. and your logic fails -- it may be a combination of games, but that doesn't mean the end result is any good. the colors and graphics are bland.
My God all these memories..
