This is a very nice description of the difference between bicarbonate secretion mechanisms in the proximal vs distal tubule, but it leaves out the key point which is that the proximal tubule mechanism is responsible for recovering existing plasma bicarbonate, but the distal tubule mechanism is important for generating new bicarbonate in the process of excretion of metabolic acid.
