In celebration of Stebal Drums 25th Year in the Drum Biz!
The Engraving
Drum Industry legend, JohnAldridge, is an accomplished hand engraver and has mastered the techniques usedby his drum engraving predecessors of the 1920s-30s. Although there aremachines that can engrave now, nothing can reproduce the strokes and appearanceof the the archaic wriggle style, so John prefers to stay with the time testedmethod of hand engraving. There are no machines, powered tools, or any otherdevices other than a few small wood handled blades used in this approach! Hiswork has been sought after by many high profile drummers as well as vintagedrum collectors throughout the world.
John has producednumerous versions of the Ludwig Black Beauty with the Ludwig Drum Company, starting with the 1990 reintroduction of hand engraving to Ludwig. Since 1999,he has served as the exclusive engraver of the Black Beauty snare drum, completingthe 90th Anniversary model, the 2005-2007 Limited edition, and the latest BlackBeauty 100th Anniversary Limited Edition snare drums. But Ludwig is not theonly company to take advantage of John's engraving services. In late 1989, Johnopened the door for his first custom jobs and engraved a few drums for DrumWorkshop's top endorsers. Most of his early production involved doingaftermarket engraving on drums for individuals and drum shops. Since that time,John has been the prime source for drum companies looking to enhance theirproduct offerings with engraving. From the hoops for Johnny Craviotto'sprestigious Lake Superior snare drums, to Slingerland's Copper and BrassBeauties, to Tama's Kenny Aronoff Trackmaster limited, to Ludwig's 90th-100thAnniversary model snare drums, John has worked with most major manufacturers ofmetal snare drums in the music industry.
John is also thefounder of Not So Modern Drummer Magazine , and the REO Speedwagon drum tech(15yrs)
The Drum Utilizing a thin industry-standard 1mm shell, and plated with sleek black nickel, the Collector's Series Black Nickel over Brass is a versatile workhorse snare. Suitable for a variety of musical applications, it offers that sought-after "classic studio brass snare sound" for Rock, Jazz, and beyond; offering brightness and cut with a decidedly metallic tonal characteristic.
A purposefully simple design, the MAG™ is a workhorse drop throw-off with horizontal tension adjustment and smooth, easy-adjust action. It gets its name from a clever magnet that's integrated into the body of the throw-off. When the handle is in the up position, it won’t release without a slight tug. When it does release it throws the strainer completely off the head to avoid any strainer buzz. The innovative new 3P, three-position butt plate, allows you to easily and accurately toggle between 3 different levels of strainer tension. The combination of the MAG™ throw-off and the 3P Butt Plate is the most reliable and adjustable strainer system DW has ever built.
True-Tone® custom wires for enhanced response and snap. The wires feature specially-designed stainless steel coils and brass-end plates for perfect snare-to-head contact. (20-strand for 14")The most consistent counter hoop DW has ever produced. It’s called the True Hoop and it’s a major advancement in the relationship between bearing edge, drum head and counter hoop. As drummers, we know how critical that relationship is to tuning and tone. The True Hoop is just that, round and flat, and without the typical variations you often see around stamped holes. It even has an attractive new touch: a fully-rounded outer edge. True Hoops are also gauged in graduated thicknesses to factory-match various drum sizes. DW snare drums come with 3.0mm True Hoops.
When DW created the version of the perfect counter hoop (True Hoop™), they moved their focus to tension rods. While True-Pitch® rods set a new industry benchmark, they still felt there was little room for improvement. After including stainless steel tension rods on Collector’s Series Stainless Steel snare drum and witnessing their superior quality first-hand, they decided this was the only option. Introducing, SSR (Stainless Steel Rods), DW's most high-quality, reliable tension rod to date
