How I handle an unexpected power outage during a workday in the tiny house.

  • We got a windstorm this week and I lost power to the tiny house in the middle of a work day...actually in the middle of a Zoom meeting.
Luckily I have a plan in place to handle that. I plugged my internet modem and my computer hub into my Bluetti AC50B which is a 700 watt power station (full disclosure, Bluetti sent it to me but my opinions are mine) and was able to get back up and running in less than 5 minutes.
If I had been paying attention to my weather app I'd have had everything already plugged into it and then the power station plugged into the wall so I would have been able to continue working uninterrupted when the power went down.
The Bluetti, like many battery power stations, has pass-through charging which means you can be using it while you charge it and it can switch from wall power to batter power so fast that you don't even notice it let alone get shut down.
I also show what I keep ready to go for water and lights so that I'm good when the grid goes down.
I've make other videos about being prepared that you can find in the preparedness playlist. I just wanted to give you a real look at what I do when the grid goes down when I'm not expecting it.
Hope you enjoy the video. If you do, please give it a thumbs up and share it with someone you think might find it useful.
    Love you guys!

Such a smart, resourceful person! So cool/admirable. I have LED flashlights around me. Nightstand, stuck on fridge, on my living room desk, etc., so I can always access light right away. Waters never been an issue. I don’t have battery backups. If the power goes out and I lose TV, 😮nternet, etc., I just kinda go @Thank God, some peace and quiet for a while…”, and ride it out. Go sit at Taco Belk or Del Taxi for an hour or make a Dolkar Tree run for anything I might need. I have a guitar, sketch pads and a playful cat…I have no problem occuoying/entertaining myself when needed, if I temporarily lose all the modern digital comforts. It’s so green and lush there. I love that view out your living room window, to your little cleared-out seating/shade area. 😊 You always seem to have it together and dialed in.

These tip are very good reminders because due to fires and other issues we are getting power outages more frequently. I usally have candles handy but we put in a new floor and we packed away a lot of things including the candles. So I need To dig those out and fill some gallons of water because we have a well. I always keep a flash light by our bed in case I need it at night. Thank you for good reminders! I love Sofie she probably just wants attention cause your attention is on someone else. That's what my cat use to do.😊

I love being prepared too! I highly recommend a few solar landscape lights. Easy to bring them in the house and light a whole room for several hours. When we have storms coming I shut them off and leave them out to charge until the storm comes in.

I live in the mountains and we have issues with tree limbs and sometimes even trees taking out our power lines too. Several years ago I came across rechargeable light bulbs and they have been a real game changer for me. They stay in my lamps full time and maintain a charge through use. I’ve given them to my daughter and grandchildren too.

Always enjoy your videos. I have a "punch jar" but I use it to make sun tea. I love sun tea. Never perk or heat tea traditionally. I think it tastes so much better brewed by the sun. I also use purified water because with our water in Indianapolis one can smell the chlorine when it comes from the faucet. Ugh You are so organized. I'm sort of hap hazard, but I know where everything is. LOL I have a crank radio, flashlights, water. I have two battery operated Coleman lanterns. They light up an entire room. Stay safe. Have a good week.

Hope you power is back on soon. Thanks for all the good ideas. Always have a supply of larger bottled water. Flashlights in every room. Outdoor BBQ with a burner on the side. When we had ice storm power was out for three days. Fireplace burned over 1 cord of wood. Cooked in the fireplace. Always have a stocked pantry. Baked potatoes in the fire place. Cast iron cookware grilled cheese sandwiches and canned tomato soup. Lucky eggs did not freeze in the fridge. Power chargers for phones and radio. The one thing I would do next time is set up a tent inside the house. We don't have much cold weather in Texas but when we do its ice! We do better when it is out in warmer weather. ha ha Not.

I also keep emergency supplies of all sorts, some that can be solar power charged or battery, since I live in hurricane area of south Florida. Being a retired single woman, I mainly rely on myself. I live on second floor 2 bedroom condo and my balcony gets a lot of sun. The longest I went without electricity was almost 2 weeks. I even have 3 battery operated fans. I do have a friend and family members I can stay with when a bad storm actually hits until it leaves the area. I always keep gallon water jugs from Costco during the hurricane season as a backup. I would like to check out a generator like you have maybe to run the refrigerator if necessary. I always enjoy your video content Adeline.

You have the best tips!😍 For me something about the power going out leaves a hush/quiet kinda lonely feeling. I loose power about 5x year! In the heat index 115’ over summer, lost power 16hrs. I keep old water bottles frozen to keep my fridge cool until shutdown is over. Also based off Red Cross emergency list, I keep a “Crash Bag Backpack” ready all times. We get fierce winter storms and tornadoes! 😊❤

I keep 3-4 big 2-gallon water jugs (sealed, from $ store) & switch out every 6 months when we change time & switch batteries/smokealarms,etc. I use the "old" water for making coffee. Also keep nice thick baby wipes for "spit baths". Live on Whidbey Island..... surprised not more outages considering the wind storms coming thru the Straights!

smart woman, I live outside of town in a small central ny town. we have always had a gas stove (propane) just for that reason, I can light my burners and cook, heat water if need be when the power goes out because our water is on our own well, and I always put up water before a storm also, it's a life saver! and of course buckets in the tub for flushing or washing up.😊

We did fine considering, we went thru Hurricane Michael, we were without power for 18 days, and we were on a well so we had gallons of water and went to fill in town places were letting you fill for free we cooked on our grill, had our refrigerator and freezer hooked up to a generator, we flushed our toilets with the water we got, of course all very inconvenient, neighbors let us shower that had several generators. We are prepared even now we live in Hurricane alley.

It's smart to be "self-prepared." I'm living in the coastal South, and hurricane season always brings its share of concerns and headaches. I lived away for a number of years and forgot how important preparation can be. Remember the fable of the ant and the grasshopper? It was the ants that were always working working working to be prepared, while the grasshopper was fiddling away and having himself a grand old time. Consequently, the grasshopper was never prepared. Unfortunately, I was more like the grasshopper when I arrived back in the area. All it took was riding out a Category 5 hurricane and experiencing no electricity for 10 1/2 days and local water tre😊atment plants being destroyed. Try finding water when the roads are finally cleared of downed power lines and blockage by trees. That last blast of a hurricane brought the lesson home and laid it in my lap. Of course, as pet owners, we know the most important thing is to have plenty of food, water, and cat litter if your roomie/roomies. Sophie wasn't being pushy. She was just using her usual warning system, so you didn't forget!we 😊

Power outages are not very common in my area, however; we lost power 2 years ago on Thanksgiving day due to an accident in the neighborhood. It was out for 7 hours, and we were hosting dinner at a friend’s house. I went home and got my camp stove and propane tank from my RV. We had a propane air fryer where we cooked the turkey. We were able to warm the ham in the gas oven. Luckily, the weather was pleasant. We enjoyed cooking poolside in his beautiful backyard. We created fun memories that day.

I make sure my chargers are all up to date. I have tea light candles to heat my two plant pot heaters for the winter also doubles to heat up my kettle for cup of soups, jarred stews and drinks.

Nice review. You did not mention toilets, a very important issue when the water supply is not available and your waste management is a flush toilet. We have municipal water, which will probably always be here, but just in case we keep a five gallon bucket, and a bag of peat moss for an impromptu, waterless, toilet. We use this system on our off-grid property and it works perfectly. The Humanure Handbook, available free online, reviews how to use this system safely, without worrying about your hazardous waste.

You are smart! What starter battery source would you recommend? I live in a senior community, but I still keep slar powered radio that can hand crank and charge my phone. Also solar and USB flashlight. But we don't have gas here and we're not allowed open flames of any kind. Love to youand Sophie. 😊

Hi. You can find small battery banks that fit in your hand and can keep a phone charged very inexpensively. If you want something that will charge a laptop and /or power lights then a small power bank makes sense but will cost more. Most companies will have various sizes and price points. Bluetti, Ecoflow, Jackery, Vitoman, Pecron are all companies that make good ones and have lots of options . I'd start small and stay within my budget.

Hmm....I just posted about an hour ago, hit Comment, and it is not posted. In addition, I am not getting notifications when you are posting a new video, Adelina! Just FYI.
If you get this comment, there are apps for a flashlight on your cell phone, Adelina. I have one on my cell phone and it is invaluable when a flashlight is not around or reaching for it next to my bed.
Hope you are well ! Let's see if this comment is posted!
    Cheers from NYC

Hi. Yes the flashlight in the phone is good in a pinch but I wouldn't want to rely on that. Sorry about you not getting notifications. RUclips is weird sometimes. Make sure you're still subscribed.

@@myBIGtinyhouselife : Agreed. I certainly do not want the cell phone flashlight app as anything except a go to because there is nothing else at the moment. I've checked and I am subscribed as I have been -- as you know -- for years! Cheers!

Where did you purchase those bags you keep your things in, like the cable cords, lights, ect? Thanks. 😊 I really like your videos.

How long does your small Bluetti run your LAN? I also work virtually from home. The UPS I bought 3 years ago will run my computer for 45 min -1 hr only.

My Bluetti AC50b will run my hub and laptop for about 10 hours. I don't use my second screen during those times and keep my printer off.

That power device you have won't power up fridges and big items. just laptops etc right.

Not this one. My Bluetti 1800 will run the fridge though.

I basically have the same kind of work at home setting. (laptop, monitor, modem, hub) Got a question…can you plug your hub into the bluetti? I have a Jackery 1500 but don’t know exactly what I can or can’t plug into it for work and don’t want to blow the thing up.

Hi. Yes, I plugged my hub into the Bluetti. I don't use my second screen, just the laptop. It works out great.

@@myBIGtinyhouselife Thanks for the info. Appreciate it. My problem is that I I need my big monitor to work because my laptop screen is too small.

In that case I'd use my big power station, the 1800 WT. I think it would run both the monitor and laptop for quite a while. Especially if I turned the brightness of the laptop way down.
