Lyrics:
i seen a girl on a one way corridor
stealing down a wrong way street
for all the world like an urban toreador
she had wheels on on her feet
well the cars do the usual dances
same old cruise and the kerbside crawl
but the rollergirl she’s taking chances
they just love to see her take them all
no fears alone at night she’s sailing through the crowd
in her ears the phones are tight and the music’s playing loud
hallelujah here she comes queen rollerball
enchante what can i say don’t care at all
you know she used to have to wait around
she used to be the lonely one
but now that she can skate around town
she’s the only one
no fears alone at night she’s sailing through the crowd
in her ears the phones are tight and the music’s playing loud
she gets rock n roll a rock n roll station
and a rock n roll dream
she’s making movies on location
she don’t know what it means
but the music make her wanna be the story
and the story was whatever was the song what it was
rollergirl don’t worry
d.j. play the movies all night long
she tortures taxi drivers just for fun
she like to read their lips
says toro toro taxi see ya tomorrow my son
i swear she let a big truck graze her hip
she got her own world in the city
you can’t intrude on her
she got her own world in the city
cos the city’s been so rude to her
come slippin and a slidin
life’s rollerball
slippin and a slidin
skateaway that’s all
shala shalay hey hey skateaway
she’s singing shala shalay hey hey
skateaway

Still listening to the Straits, April 12th, 2024... and beyond !!
April 16th
Makes two of us as of 4/25/24
Breaker Breaker
Hello April 12! Stretched out like this [here on April 30th (2024)], I can see and hear you clearly. From the distance where I’m at, you look like you’re down a one-way corridor with countless doors on either side of it. There’s a music in this interstitial space. And Hallelujah! Here she comes, Queen Rollerball. She’s making movies on location, and the DJ plays the movies, so she imagines us, you and me, “All night long. All night long.”
Over and out!
61 years young in Illinois diggin' this tune from my college days
Hell yes!
Listening in 2024..anyone else?
Yeah In Manchester, England.
You bet,
Got Making Movies on LP. Now that I once again have an amp with a phono input, time to pull it out. And maybe Dancing By The Pool.
@@inverterville1
Most definitely
Anyone else still digging this classic in 2022? And now in 2023? How about 2024?
Yes. Heard it for the first time in maybe 40 years and immediately felt what I felt then about it. Been playing it nonstop since.
Right now 4/7/22. Drunk as a skunk! 🍻
I am . Also very few people have covered a Dire Straits song , actually I can not think of any.
Heck Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yup
I miss 1981
It was the first year of Regan's presidency but it was a better time.
Toro toro taxi, see ya tomorrow my son.
Greatest line ever
Very true.
yeeeeaaaahhhhh
The most underrated Dire Straits song I know
Living on a thin line was extremely underrated but so very important. However it never reached MTV. Once I saw the skate away video I was hooked
Agree. Making Movies was one of the great albums ever.
I did not know there were underrated Dire Straits songs:) I love them all. I could listen to Knopfler guitar anytime.
Not listened to for decades...
Absolutely superb.. goosebumps all over..
My favorite
Christ that Knopfler can play. Won't be another like him.
Favourite Dire Straits song.
Very underrated.
this and solid rock beyond comparison..
2024 reporting in.
God Loves you ROLLERGIRL R.I.P.
Rollergirl is eternal.
RIP Rollergirl.
She's dead???
The beautiful woman that got away. God Bless all❤❤❤@@thiammady4782
R.I.P Roller Girl Jayzik Azikiwe (1958 - 2008)
R.I.P Music Video Director Lester Bookbinder (1929 - 2017)
Thanks, was wondering who she was. Did a great job. Will be missed.
thank you
❤❤❤❤❤❤you rollergirl.
@@josephkogut9568 She was from Gambia. Her father was the first president of post colonial Nigeria.
Quite an interesting background!@@christopherharmon2433
Underrated classic. The song, the video- a timeless vibe.
I think my eyeshadow was inspired by this video!
Man, I have always loved this song, but I forgot how good the videos for this album are. It’s a little masterpiece.
Hallelujah here she comes,,
the 80's. there will never be such a decade with so much talent, imagination, and just good music and videos. WOW!!!
what year that video was release
@@Eggmanrocks It was released in 1981. The director was Lester Bookbinder.
@@spectrum10 you sure the video look like late 80 or early 90s
@mpaladaeggmanThe Skateaway video was released in 1981, the same year that MTV was launched.
@@spectrum10 really i know the song was but that video ahead by 10 years
RIP roller girl 🙏🏼
*_"hallelujah, here she comes"_* 🎶
That was some kinda skatin’ 🤩
Rest in peace, beautiful Jayzik.
OMG! I'm 59 and STILL totally diggin it!
id say brings back tears...
Thirteen years ago today, on 31 January 2008, we lost Jayzik (Jay) Azikiwe, the roller girl ,1958-2008.
We honour her life, and how wonderful her performance was for this video, one of the greatest of all time.
💖🖤💖🖤💙🖤
I always wondered who that cool roller girl was. Thanks for putting a name to her face. RIP.
@@highnetworthwomeninstitute4572 She was credited as 'Jay Carly' on the credits--which on the original VHS ran in white in the shadowed area below the band.
Rip Jayzik (Jay) Azikiwe.
Interesting person.
Not a skater, mind you...
Mark Knopfler, Dire Straits, Early '80s MTV... Can't top it.
That’s right
Mark is a Genious , Masterpiece
Jayzik Azikiwe (the rollergirl) Rest In Peace. I cried when I heard. So much potential...
Live changing record solid rock is dynamite too their best album hands down!
Hallelujah, here she comes 💖
2024. Playing it while I rollerblade. Never gets old. So smooth and cool.
Like the old style skates, like in this video.
Used to be roller rinks around, not any more. 😞
Oklahoma City still got some
@@mollyjones4165 Hmmm, a bit too far away for me, but happy you have a rink in your area.
Oh to be young again
Radio has outlasted video, and roller skates have outlasted rollerblades!!!!!

This video, FWIW, is timeless with its minimalist set design (including the lovely Roller Girl). Just love the fade-out of the band playing in the faded sunset.
Recreated for the video for Daft Punk's "Get Lucky," because Daft Punk often honored those who came before.
One of my faves...I love dire straits!!
Making Movies....best album. Every song perfection. Mark Knopfler is a true genius!
Couldn't agree more!!!!
For my money, the most brilliantly innovative guitarist ever.
@@ianthomas5955 I completely agree
@@barbrabass6903 Thanks for the reply, Barbra. When I first heard Sultans of Swing over 40 years ago I didn't think it possible for anyone to change chords so quickly and effortlessly so in 1982 I went to see Dire Straits at the Deeside Leisure Centre in north Wales with a pal of mine to see if the magic could be produced live. It could!! Knopfler was absolutely brilliant and his guitar work was around 98% studio quality. I love Mark's solo work as well and play the cd's all the time - they are timeless.
I saw them at Radio City in the from the third row in NYC.... Romeo and Juliet Skateaway, espresso love it doesn't get any better
I remember this video from the earliest days of MTV.
Best time capsule
One of the best music videos
Timeless classic
Songs to get lost in.
they played this song at the roller rink way back when..... made me a instant DS fan for life
Rest in peace roller girl, and thank you for the memories....peace....loved this girl....
Early MTV video staple. Song still stands up.
I still dig this song
This is probably the best music video I’ve ever seen!
He's the most fluid guitar player I have ever heard. It just flows and it's so beautiful. Thanks, Scotland!!!!
Good to hear this again after so many years.
So Glad to have the original version
And, just like that, I'm 20 years old again. Magic.
I'm with ya. Freshman year at Ohio University. Queen rollergirl. RIP
Yes!
The guitar solo in the last minute and a half is magic! No show off shredding or noise just tasteful and beautiful playing that captures the mood of the song perfectly
The sound of a guitar crying...... brilliant
My favourite bit of music EVER!
You just summed up MK 😊
That was well said and exactly right!
Phoenix, AZ
Direstraights I was afan at the jump. Most under rated dands of the 80s
Such a beautiful girl skater.
my favorite Dire Straits song, I remember when this video came out when I was a little girl. This is visually, one of the coolest music videos ever made.
My 18 year old Granddaughter loves this. ❤
Dire Straits. Just Great Music !!!
the guitar piece at the end as it fades out gets me every time
You have not lived unless you skated to this song. Good times.
Roller Girl 💃🎶⛸️🎧💕
It's hard to choose, but "Skateaway" is one of their best, by far
A church service like beginning 😊😊
Great song. Dire straights ,great band
RIP Beautiful Beautiful Angel ❤️
That drumming
The skating girl is amazing
man....they dont make em like they used to anymore
The finest music video ever made.
This lacks nothing. Love it all.
The original band...... nothing more than perfection
Their best song.
40 year-old music but still sounds fresh
Eikä tuoksu sillille.
Not just fresh, but infinitely better than anything being released today!
Dire straits will always be fresh
To put that into perspective, 40 years before this song would have been the music of the second world war!
@@jackahorey2354 Wow feels like yesterday.
Timesless!
Music doesn't go better than this song.
amen
She used to be the Lonely One 🎵🎼🎶
RIP Jayzik, you were gone too soon.
She’s got her own world in the city. RIP roller girl.
"Yea-heh". What a great moment in the song.
The ending volume swells just make me cry.
Me too. Especially since this was a favorite song of an ex who has passed away. RIP Roller Girl
Knopfler needs a medal or something!
Their best work ..
It's fall 1980 living in the dorms in my sophomore year in college. Some guy stuck his speaker out of his window and played this on vinyl. I'll never forget that feeling of appreciating that song so much.
I love it! Little did that guy know he was creating a wonderful memory you’d carry with you forever.
@@lisalisa13 Thats the thing, we never know what memories we create for others. And, In the end, memories are all we can truely leave.
I wished I was there to experience that, as well.
That and then some
I was a freshman in Fine art.
Free parking next to the paramount. First time I...felt someone play guitar. I still get it. Takes me strait back.
He had good taste
Put some skates on. Hell of a lot better for you than what most people are doing with themselves today. I’ve experienced a lot of things but a good roll never gets old and always feels great.
Music videos turned into art
That’s why the album is named "making movies"
One of those summertime songs...
Toro, Toro taxi....see you tomorrow my son.........One of my all time favorites from Dire straits.
Yes! me too. That & through the Uh! was always my fav part.
Absolutely beautiful ❤️
SHE is Beautiful
I don't think I've seen this video for over 20 years! Making Movies was the first album I ever bought.
"Skateaway" is a perfectly composed song, the lyrics and especially Knopfler's singing guitar work capture the feeling of youthful joy and movement. The fact that he makes it about a "Roller girl" instead of just any skater also makes it meaningful because young ladies of that generation were really coming into their own and this song celebrates them and their new found freedoms.
I was 21 when this song and video came out and I admit I cried real tears when I learned that Jayzik (Jay) Azikiwe, the Rollergirl had passed away. But her beautiful performance will live on and inspire young girls for as long as they have dreams and the "Skateaway" video to enjoy.
Damn. You got me crying now.
Roller Girl is my sister 🛼🛼
That statement is really well said.
U r so right. These cats r legendary luvd em then LUV them now!!
Always loved Knopfler's style of guitar playing!!
The boys were iconic for about 15 years and produced a timeless book of work
My heart and organ. Step by step for music.
One of my favourite DS songs,i've heard when i was 14 in a far, far, far 1980.No worries about all and life was simple and happy.
This gave me hope when I was a depressed lonely junior in high school. I'm a nurse married to a neurosurgeon. I'm now 56 and he is 60, but this song encourages us and uplifts our spirits during Co vid 19.
Thank you Mark!!
@Byrons Reward
Why the fuck are you here then?
We’re about the same age. I remember first seeing it on MTV very clearly and how blown away I was by the song AND video.
I so agree!!! - It's always been THE song of hope to me...
I’m the same age as you OP. I remember the feeling that the world was bigger than my suburban hellscape, and that I could go somewhere where magic was a daily occurrence. The music made her want to be the story.
Funny, I'm 57 and married now too but I remember it from college (too many depressed nights) but it always lifted me.
Sad to know the roller girl, Jayzik Azikiwe, passed in 2008.
I remember seeing this video on MTV back around 1982 or '83. I was a strange kid who didn't watch cartoons. I watched MTV instead. This was my first introduction to Dire Straits (not "Sultans of Swing").
The original video had the credits at the bottom (in the black), starting around the 5:10 mark.
R. I. P. Roller girl.
SkateAway, Tunnel of Love and Romeo & Juliet are still excellent songs. They don’t feel old.
Yesss totally agree. Those three are side 1 of the Making Movies record. My absolute favourite Dire Straits album.
This and the music video for their Romeo and Juliet are both very good.
And Expresso Love! ☕️🤎
Every song on that album is perfection
@@leslijones4443 Yes thankyou
Beautiful song is an understatement, the outro can bring a grown man to tears
It's almost 2024. I'm still grooving to this classic.
1980s was thee best decade to be a teenager!!!!! Best music too!!!! 70s classic rock and 80s rock!!!!!!
This is my favourite Dire Straits song. I can't understand why this song didn't make the "Very Best Of" CD. What a shame!
Wait….. it’s not?!?! I just went and looked. That’s mind boggling. This is one of the first songs in think of when I think of Dire Straits. Crazy.
@@kevinway4460 mind-boggling, indeed! I'm glad I'm not alone in feeling this way.
MINE TOO!!!
I had to buy Making Movies CD to get this one. Not a bad thing having another Dire Straits CD.
@@robertsonsid and that the reason why its not on it
I was 15, this music made me dream, dance, hope, live....the best days, a whole life in front...
I was 14...🙂...great time to be a young person. I didn't necessarily think that at the time, but we had great music, were not buried in our phones, and didn't have a need for validation from social media.
Cool days 😎
I was 10 and had no idea how awesome this music would once become. It's like a capsule to an earlier dimension in time and space. I'm not exactly sure if it functions the same for those who hadn't first experienced it during it's time of arrival. But it's definitely cool..😎
I was 31 and it did the same shit for me! You like good music!!!
I was 15, too! I have always loved this album. I recorded this video when it was current and watched it lots in the suburbs of LA.
Me too ! I loved this album and I was like 15! I loved to hear him pick………he had his own style and talent!
Best video they ever did. She is amazing.
What a staple on mtv in the 80s
It’s the drum beat that gets me. Simple, but catchy. Absolutely my favorite Dire song.
