You should use the solent with the gennaker, instead of the forward jib. That would give you a better slot shape and size between both the jib and gennaker, and the jib and main. Asymmetrical flying sails do a great job at generating lots of apparent wind, so you definitely want your main up to take advantage of that. You’ll be surprised how far in the main wants to be trimmed relative to the TWA, often on a broad reach, the boom will be well inside the beam.
When you want to Jibe, take the lazy sheet around the front of the sail, let the working sheet go & the sail will go round the front of the stay, pull in on the new sheet. Saves having to furl the sail.
Thats not so easy on a big boat. The effort of furling is usually easier than pulling the 70-100’ of line it would take to do an outside gybe on a 50 footer.
Just wanted to express my thanks for these videos you guys do. I have only recently discovered your work and it has proven to be very helpful so far. I will be purchasing a new built Exploration 45 and your insights have been invaluable to me. many thanks and safe travels.
Great episode on using the Gennaker, along with the earlier episode on the installation of the lines and furler it convinces me to consider the purchase of a similar system next year. Thanks again and “bottoms up”.
I thought she was for sale?? Yip you'll never be able tack that gennaker, gybing shouldnt be a problem except for the usuals sheet tensions etc, got a pole for it. I've got a reaching skinnaker on a carver continuous furler on a steel Van De Stadt S34' which works a treat.
Nice to hear from you Dawn and Peter, as some of the comments mention you were about to sell your wonderful boat. Maybe you can comment on the current situation ?
thank you for sharing, interesting video! Just a question from a bathtube sailor: if you sail with foresail alone is the boat not heavily unbalanced? If you have to keep the rudder off all the time to keep her on course, will it not make her performance mediocre due to the extra drag from the rudder action?
Sooo nice to see your videos again, it was so sad to discover you were in the process of selling Chloe. Please keep living your “hermit crab dream” and let us dream with you! Cheers from Italy.
It is a Sapphire 835, I used it much more than anticipated and it handled canvas projects up to about 6 layers - e.g. folded over 2-3 times depending upon the canvas thickness. It is a good, reliable machine but requires somewhat unique bobbins.
You can do an outside gybe, but that takes a lot of effort on a big boat, as you need to pull a lot more line through. If you’re racing yea, outside gybe all day, but for cruising, it’s easier just to furl.
Thought you’d sold it are you keeping it now
Are you selling or staying?
Have missed you guys, welcome back 👍👍👍👍

Didn't you sell your boat?
🙂👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Good to hear from you Dawn and Peter. Have missed you. Trust you are both well. Hope so, and looking forward to additional reports. Take care.
Great to share your company again. Good health and best wishes.
Great vid

Great reviews on B&G system

I saw Chloe for sale at a bargain price. It should be already gone. Unfortunately.
It would appear that it is not gone
@André Some social media comments appear to state it is in under same ownership, & not for sale

Que buen video.
Ojalá que el nuevo dueño de "Cloe" siga esta tradición. Un gran abrazo para ambos.

Fun video!
Glad you’re back & sailing
Hi Dawn, could you let me know which Husqvarna Viking sewing machine you had on board and if you were happy with its performance? Thank you! Miriam

With a Solent rig, aren't you supposed to tack the most forward sail around the outside?...not through "the gap".
You can do an outside gybe, but that takes a lot of effort on a big boat, as you need to pull a lot more line through. If you’re racing yea, outside gybe all day, but for cruising, it’s easier just to furl.
Glad to see you both back on RUclips.
Hey there!
Is there a reason why you decided to go with classic mainsail system instead of furling mast or furling boom systems?
We wanted the most control over the sail in any situation. Several books from worldwide sailors pointed us in this direction. Thanks for watching!
Nice to see your videos again.
Great explanation, thank you!
Класс!
