So glad I found you! I'm a few years older (51), with a family (2 kids) and a few years behind you on the sailing journey. I'm in my boat as I write this (telework!) and see you've done much of what I'm doing. I'm writing this at 2:35 through the vid so haven't seen what's to come. Love it so far!
I noticed the same. The voice over cadence and basically overall reminded me of CW. And that's a compliment 😁 Great adventure and great video. Sweet and simple.
I had this dream 40 years ago, and got as far as Catalina Island on a 32' boat, and a SCUBA instructor license, when life took a turn back east. Only difference is I would have taken a cat. Congrats on completing your dream!
Outstanding! I watched both Sam and Christian’s videos and like you, was hooked. Wise choice for a first boat and great project check list. Great video, good luck, and fair winds.
Pretty much every sailing channel could employ various ideas from Tom's channel. Humour; no endless, tedious bloody electric guitar solos and obscure 'rock music'; common sense; objectivity; kindness; education; handy tips; intelligence and a subtley expressed liking for the famous German soul group Led Zeppelin. I wouldn't mind betting that a little Pink Floyd has passed through your head from time to time too. There is so much to talk about, especially when you are properly miked-up like Tom seems to be, that royalty-free music is pretty much redundant except for a very occasional few sunset shots or footage of dolphins joining alongside you. I don't know what your day job is Tom (obviously something way above my understanding - maybe finance), but please resign NOW and set yourself up as a full time sailing and merriment channel. It WILL work.
Any time there is a half-assed explanation of diesel mechanics AND an Airwolf reference, I'm hooked.😆 Please keep this going. No one else is doing this!
I had this exact same idea. I watched Sam Holmes and christian Williams as well and I thought that would be really cool and now you have completed it and posted it on RUclips as well. I was waiting for someone to go through all of the prep work it takes in order to do a trip like that and I found it awesome that you incorporated all the steps. It's also extremely expensive and time consuming. Well Done!! you should be proud of yourself.
Hey Tom. Thank you ever so much for your hilarious and very inspirational movie of your trip. I just subscribed in the hope of ever getting to follow you in another crazy sailing adventure. Now i will go and loon for a boat to follow suit. Thanks, Dries
I woke up at 2am half way to Hawaii with a cruise ship next to me . Little scary on a 35ft boat! I remember the sound of the propellers. You’re a funny guy !!
Great Video!!! Amazing coincidence of timing. While you were sailing from SF to Hawaii, I was sailing from Hawaii to Seattle departing June 18, 2022 from what looks like the same dock at Ala Wai (F dock?) that you arrived at. In Nov 2020 I sailed from Oxnard CA to Hawaii. Congratulations on doing the voyage single handed, quite the feat!! Fair winds and following seas! Nino SV Andiamo
Really well done....congratulations on your solo sail....some cooking/meals is always a fun watch, along with fishing, how the evenings were spent, and weather encountered....Again, congrats and hope to see more sailing videos of yours. All the best,
Well done sir. Educational…great story…. You demonstrated the importance of the 6 P’s… Proper Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance. Solo and 19 days is a really amazing crossing. Thanks!
One minute I was looking at sailboats for sale in the US, the next minute watching you sailing to Hawaii.. I liked the idea of the Ericson 32 before this but now I am pretty much sold. Great job on the boat and the video.
Great job! Lol, it was fun watching you get less and less polished in your appearance as you get closer to Hawaii! If you still live around the Bay Area, it’d be great to meet you some time.
Loved it, great passage, photography, character,I've seen the others too..please put out more content....I have a 6 months solo plan myself to Hawaii..you give me ambition...one other thing, I watched a marine solo sail 2-3 years ago...great content, then he disappeared and so did all his great videos, if anyone has any info...also nice job with all the boat projects...please keep em coming!!!!!
Mate, I know it is easy for me to say, but please keep these videos coming. There are so many of us who are inexperienced at sailing and need all the help we can get. You seem like we novices can learn so much from you because it sounds like you learned it all relatively recently and won't assume all know everything. .There are a wealth of experienced people, many of whom seem to relish putting down novices, forgetting that they themselves were just like us once. I believe that many novices are put off running through the very basics with us on video as the know-alls take such delight in correcting us and assuming their status is lifted by denouncing our inexperience. I've seen it in columns of sailing magazines so many times, and especially on the question and answer parts of online sailing sites. The other difficulty is the 'esoterica' of sailing, telling somebody something in sailing 'jargon' in order to perhaps baffle them and exclude others. It is a strange human attitude, and perhaps I am over-sensitive to it, but I hope I will never ever try to tread on somebody else's shoulders in order to 'big myself up'!! Bless your heart for your kindness - it takes a real man to do what you're doing.
Crack me up dude! I’m a fellow Bay area single handed sailor and your comments and suggestions are spot on for those who want to do longer distance sailing. Enjoyed watching your video!
Like the tune dude. You're a good dancer too. Well worth the watch 🤣. Just jokes - congrats and bring us more adventures please. Mars if you want, sure 👍
You know? I watched both of those videos you mentioned back when they were first posted. Sam, in particular, has posted many more adventures since then. It has been a great experience watching.
Hats off to you brother…you seem to have more reasons for not doing this than most who contemplate the challenge… Great job on the refit…she seems light and fast…wondering if you would trade for heavier boat with more comfort for a little less speed now that you’ve had the experience…looks like you had pretty fair weather on this trip…hope you have the same on return… I’ll be watching!
Well done and great job on the video, Tom! Having spent some time in FL, GA, and SC your depiction of the Daytona Beach shirt wearing red neck was worthy of an Oscar... Your clips of the many jobs required for preparing a 40 year old boat should give others some critical info on what they are getting themselves into.
It’s interesting, I just came upon your blog site while looking for advice on a Raymarine upgrade. And read your bio. I guess a few of us have been inspired by Christian Williams. My buddy and I are on the wrong side of our 40s and are buying a Catalina 42 with the plan to do the California to Hawaii run in 2 years! Great to find your RUclips channel and see you are making your dreams come true!
Thanks for your efforts in producing this video I enjoyed it. It has some Christian Williams qualities, and that is good. 👍⛵Edit. Just wanted to add congratulations on such a great achievement. I dreamed of doing this but unfortunately it will probably stay just that.
Absolutely hilarious. I have a Yanmar 3 on my Dehler 37 CWS, and that is the best explanation I’ve heard for how it works! I have also followed Sam Holmes’s and Christian to Hawaii. Definitely subscribing…brilliant. And I am on,y half way through!
I consider it good fortune to have stumbled upon this channel, totally inadvertently. This is good comedy, genuine and in the moment like solo sailing brings out. I laughed hard. T b anks
Not sure I could solo sail to Hawaii. I could but think I would go more crazy. My wife loves to sail and thankfully we get along and would not get tired of each other. Great Job on your accomplishment it was no small feat.
A little bit of Okie goes a LONG way, but overall an entertaining video. Thanks for taking the effort and sharing your adventure, very impressive accomplishment, good quality video, and interesting narration.
Thank you for the video. I am considering doing the trip from Los Angeles. Couple of questions if you don’t mind: first, how did you get the boat back? Secondly was there any issue with bad weather? What is the best month to do the trip and why? Thank you 🙏
"Will the world be better for my life having been lived?" - YES, in addition to having brought a lovely (I'm certain) family into the world and provided well for them, and now a major opportunity has opened up in the field of intelligent-but-unpretentious sailing channels. Sadly it's been two months or more since your last video (this one) that I'm fearful the modern world has re-ensnared you. How many more flat screen tellies do you need? Imagine taking your little family to sea, exploring our gorgeous planet and videoing everything for posterity? My old Halcyon 27 cost less than your wind vane steering device, so this is not a channel just for comfortably-off neophytes, but for those of us engaged in scraping the bottom of the barrel. Tom, a lot of people will be enriched by your talent for this water-borne video making. I really hope we see you again soon.
Sheeesh this is me when I did a circuit of Australia around the whole Island went I, solo. By road though not in a sailing machine like this. I started talking to myself in all sorts of accents. Isolation does that to you. You can travel by road in Oz long hours no change in scenery. Also watched Sam and Christian do this trip also. Seeing the thumbnail had to watch this through. Hearing someone talk philosophy to you an Indian accent can really make you laugh.
Very nice and quite informative video. Two questions if I may: What was your sleep pattern/system? Did you use your wind vane a lot or was your electric autopilot the primary steering system?
What a delightful intellectual passage with non intellectual company. Was that your cousin Billie Bob who stopped by? Pleasant entertainment, a great way to handle the boredom of being becalmed. Thank you for the video, are you planning on doing more? I wish I had a bit more where with all to make that dream come true. Best wishes to you.
Are you not going to acknowledge the dive boogers at 12:52? For me all of this was great, but including that moment moves this video into the upper most echelon! Sail safe!
I hope 🤞 you have a great time 😅
Mate
Hahaha. Glad to find a fellow sailor with a sense of humor.
The Christian Williams influence is unmistakable, lol! Great documentation of your travels, love to see more!!!
I noticed the same. The voice over cadence and basically overall reminded me of CW. And that's a compliment 😁 Great adventure and great video. Sweet and simple.
when i get back to the waffle house..😂😂😂😂 omg i was rolling… 😆
I watched both of those crossings as well and have been hooked ever since.
I had this dream 40 years ago, and got as far as Catalina Island on a 32' boat, and a SCUBA instructor license, when life took a turn back east. Only difference is I would have taken a cat. Congrats on completing your dream!

Good on you that you mentioned these two legends.
Good sail, good winds.
Very entertaining my friend...I am sure Christian will love it. Congratulations on a job well done....makes me want to be out there ....Ever More ....
Any time there is a half-assed explanation of diesel mechanics AND an Airwolf reference, I'm hooked.😆 Please keep this going. No one else is doing this!
are you doing any more sailing videos? post more if you have them... thanks, nice video

what about sailing triteia
What does extremely expensive mean? I'm intrigued by it all.
I legit LOL’d many times during your video. Great stuff, my man
I like the mention of all the little projects, great video
One of the best sailing videos I have ever watched! Your humor is fantastic.
Ha ha ha. It's like watching Christian Williams and Vice Grip Garage all in one package! Nice job!
One of the funniest things I have seen in a long time . Rite out of nowhere great!!!!
I just have to say you have some killer dance moves Bro!
Hey Tom. Thank you ever so much for your hilarious and very inspirational movie of your trip. I just subscribed in the hope of ever getting to follow you in another crazy sailing adventure. Now i will go and loon for a boat to follow suit. Thanks, Dries
This has all the indications of becoming a very successful channel. Please keep doing it just like this!
Please keep this channel going. Would love to see more of your travel experiences as a single-hand sailor.
I woke up at 2am half way to Hawaii with a cruise ship next to me . Little scary on a 35ft boat! I remember the sound of the propellers.
You’re a funny guy !!
Congrats. It's good for the soul isn't it? It goes by too quickly I think. Well done.
Great Video!!! Amazing coincidence of timing.

Really well done....congratulations on your solo sail....some cooking/meals is always a fun watch, along with fishing, how the evenings were spent, and weather encountered....Again, congrats and hope to see more sailing videos of yours. All the best,
Awesome video I love how you just dive off the boat and check underneath . That’s gotta be surreal to look around at the depths of the ocean
Good one. Interesting project and journey. Hilarious bit in the middle there, the funniest I have ever seen on a sailing video.
Well done sir. Educational…great story…. You demonstrated the importance of the 6 P’s… Proper Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance. Solo and 19 days is a really amazing crossing. Thanks!
Thanks for filming. Very enjoyable adventure to be a part of.
Tom, great first video, and congratulations on completing the trip. Hope to see more from you.
One minute I was looking at sailboats for sale in the US, the next minute watching you sailing to Hawaii.. I liked the idea of the Ericson 32 before this but now I am pretty much sold. Great job on the boat and the video.
I am 3 minutes in. It sounds like a younger mr. Christian talking. I sense the influence. I like it so far.
Love the way you talked about your journey with the boat and your sailing skills.
Great job! Lol, it was fun watching you get less and less polished in your appearance as you get closer to Hawaii! If you still live around the Bay Area, it’d be great to meet you some time.
Tom sailed across what is now a veritable desert. 200-300 years ago that body of water fairly boiled with marine life. Now it's like a watery Sahara.

Congratulations Tom, what a life changing adventure and inspiring to us watching you living it! Thanks and we'll hoping for more.
Crack me up dude! I’m a fellow Bay area single handed sailor and your comments and suggestions are spot on for those who want to do longer distance sailing. Enjoyed watching your video!
I agree. I go sailing all the time in the Bay Area. Sams Anchor cafe and Richardsons bay are amazing places.
Well done. You really hit your stride when your alter ego appeared. Good stuff.
Great sailing video and all around great content. Thanks Tom for keeping the flame.
Like the tune dude. You're a good dancer too. Well worth the watch 🤣. Just jokes - congrats and bring us more adventures please. Mars if you want, sure 👍

Congratulations! Amazing accomplishment! PS I think Christian Williams has a 1984 Ericson 38 (I have a 1982 Ericson 38). Kudos to you!
Same I have followed quite a few Sam etc and your passage and that dead spot seem to get everyone
Hats off to you brother…you seem to have more reasons for not doing this than most who contemplate the challenge…

Absolutely brilliant, love the humour. Any more sailing plans?
Yes, lovely gentle humour. Love it.
My man. This is great stuff. Please continue making content! You'll do great.
Welcome to the wonderful world of adventure inspired Old Boat Overcapitalisation. 🤣
Love the vid 😊👍⛵️
Awesome video. So glad I clicked
Beautiful wide sea /ocean congratulation for you myfriend to arrive in Hawaii without sea tragedy.
Hilarious comedy, and some great cruising content too! Thanks
Watching Christian in 2014 was what got me into sailing. That and Elena from la Vagabond, ha!
😂Bobby was an unexpected treat!! sparkilators!!!!
Enjoyed that,,,,Thank you from Japan.

You are too funny! I’m pleased you showed up in my feed! I have a new sailor to follow!

That tether feels uncomfortably long. Good trip. You had great weather
First video I’ve seen of you, immediately subscribed, very funny and entertaining and I enjoy your editing style. 👍
Same here, half way through I subscribed. I also watch Christian Williams and Holmes crossings.❤
Sausalito home boy sailor.. Sausalito cruising. I built their sign back in the 80s.
Fair winds in your travels.
Bobby Shrub was awesome!! funny as hell. I think he oughta take the algorithm job. Anyway, great job and congrats on the passage. It was inspiring.
Welcome from the British Isles. We look forward to your next installment.
Great video, great voyage! Looking forward to more.
Bro, why did you not put out any other videos? This was gold!
I recognize you from your Yanmar maintance video. RUclips's algorithm connected me to your video! Fair winds!
Yea good content bro...nice boat good commentary 👌 the start of passage making
Not sure I could solo sail to Hawaii. I could but think I would go more crazy. My wife loves to sail and thankfully we get along and would not get tired of each other. Great Job on your accomplishment it was no small feat.
A great introduction....how very true.
Nice one ! hope to see the return leg soon!
It was so much fun to see what happens to a man long time at sea! I loved the vid. , very honest, tuna must be a small fish😊
Nicely done Tom!
A little bit of Okie goes a LONG way, but overall an entertaining video. Thanks for taking the effort and sharing your adventure, very impressive accomplishment, good quality video, and interesting narration.
This is great. Keep developing your alter ego mariner from the Deep South. I think he’s onto something.
Thank you for the video. I am considering doing the trip from Los Angeles. Couple of questions if you don’t mind: first, how did you get the boat back? Secondly was there any issue with bad weather? What is the best month to do the trip and why? Thank you 🙏

this dude was"HIGH" all the way there , funny shit
Love this Tom from wrexham north Wales
It's a testament to the strength of that rope that it was able to place the engine under arrest so quickly.
Sam is da bomb!!
Proud of you.
Derek from Vice Grip Garage would approve. Oh...by the way...im an Okie lol
Very nice and quite informative video. Two questions if I may: What was your sleep pattern/system? Did you use your wind vane a lot or was your electric autopilot the primary steering system?
