A really annoying problem which effects some Mk4 Ibiza's. Just follow the guide and go careful with the metal clips holding the plastic tailgate panel.

Cheers mate. I have a 2013 Ibiza which is slightly different. Has a slot inside where you can slide something to open the boot. Then just two screws in the handle holes. Then popped off the plastic panel. After that disconnected all connectors, sprayed some contact cleaner, and now all working again. 😊

Still a problem in 2020, but it's the first time in almost 13 years of owning this car. However, my problem was a bit more trickier. That small metal rod got unscrewed somehow and the Seat badge lever wasn't pulling enough the rod to open the boot. You can just drag the end of the rod from the lock side and it pops out of the plastic around it. Then you have to screw it back in the mechanism until you are satisfied with the lever functionality and push it back in the plastic holder. Took me like 10 minutes to figure out that that's the problem and not the seat badge lever.
Anyway, thanks a lot man for the steps, didn't managed either to get my hand between the plastic panel and medal part. But pulling from the wiper part of the plastic, managed to get out like 2 clamps which allowed my hand to slip through and get a hold of that rod.

Perfect. Green wire on black connector (orange connector is for the wiper) - get inside the car with boot shut. Use a no-power tester or just a bit wire with a pin. Ground it to the boot lock mechanism and test it on the green wire going into the black connector - that should unlock the boot. Then close boot again and try it on same wire coming out of connector, if it doesn't open that's the problem. Bypass the connector with a join or try cleaning up and wiggling the connector. Thanks for the video!

Good tips. I had a look and decided that grubbing around in a dark boot through the back seat that I still might not get the panel far enough away to let me reach the unlocking rod. I needed the boot open and working quickly so I used a 4in hole saw to drill a hole in the inner plastic panel near the top of the unlock rod and bingo! Your pictures were invaluable as I didn't have a manual with me and they showed me exactly where the hole needed to be. Make sure you take the pilot drill out or you may go through to the outer skin! I don't think that the value of a 2005 Ibiza has been dropped much by my modification and I will make a nice cover later when I do the proper fix on the mechanism.

Second time I had a flat tyre and hadn't time to do the whole climb into the boot and open it think so had to pull my spare wheen out and over the back seats and out through the passenger door. Such a handling haha.

thanks - great video and a life-saver. I had to use the 'alternative' technique to release my rod - i.e. pulling the cover back around by the wiper motor, just enough to get my hand + pliers down - takes a good yank to lift it though, which isn't easy in the confined space !

    • @CB-RADIO-UK

Thanks for the tip! it must be a running fault as on the 2017 model there's a slot just above the latch, putting the key in and swiping across releases the boot. there's only the 2 handle screws to pop the cover and the mechanism is less accessible but a quick wiggle and re insert of all the wiring plugs got it working again for me (fingers crossed!!)

Thanks for tje the video, it generally helped.
However, on my 2000. Ibiza tje mechanisam gets jammed mechanically from time to time, only when i don't close the boot properly / fully. The solution is simmilar to yours, ie lubricating everything, but when it happened the second time, the metal bit that should move with the solenoid wouldn't move, although the square bit is sliding and lubed up properly.
I ended up removing the C clip at the lower part of the mechanism, ang sliding the metal bit toward me (backwards) which resulted in the metal bit that should move the plastic square bit moves the way it should therefore unlocking the bloody boot! Makes no sense but it works for now.
I returned the plastic cover just loose without screws so i can get to it if it happens again.
    Cheers from Serbia mate! ;)

It sounds like the gear mech in the catch had failed. If you can get it open and un pop the hatch panel it should be fairly easy to replace the lock mech (buy new from ebay). However if your not sure about taking it on then yes your going to need a mechanic.

With your advises, I was yesterday able to open the boot lock from the inside. Now, I feel confident for the next job :) :
I need to do the same with the rear left door, as it is also stuck since a while. Unlike the boot, I rarely use this door, so its fixing was not a priority. Chances are that the lubricant from all lock mechanism are slowly disappearing from my 17 year old Ibiza, as the mechanisms within the remaining doors were stuck closed a couple of times, occasionally (a simple close/open with the remote was enough to resolve).
Do you know any tutorial on how to access the stuck rear door's lock mechanism from the inside?

Hi Nicola. Mine went under Seat warrantee and they just replaced the whole mech. That lasted about another 3 years before it started happening again. Its a poor design. Since I greased up the sliding part of the mech (the square black part) its been fine since.

Nicola McGee Yes its annoying when it keeps happening. Unfortunately the rear panel has to come off. If your not used to working on cars it will be a fast learning curve. Perhaps you know someone who is handy with tools and you could show them this video to work with. Once the mech is greased prop it should be fine, nothing has actually broken inside or need replacing. Best of luck.
