    "No one type of steel is better than all the others". I'm surprised you claim this if M42 is the clear winner on your comparison chart. A great informative video. Thank you.

    The M42 Steel is best sharpened using a fine CBN wheel. I have found that 180 grit works well but a 350 grit is much better.

    Try Thompson lathe tools 10V steel better price for the kind steel you get, or M42 from D-way tools.

    Could you make the comparison chart available? It would also be helpful to know which steel is used by which manufacturers.
    Thanks for the excellent concise summary of steels.

    Thompson tools are PM steel but is cryogenic treated so is the best money can buy. Plus they engrave whatever you want in the handle!

    Thanks for the info.
    Based on the video, why buy anything other that M42? Why are other metals still used if M42 is pretty much tops at everything?
    Thanks.

      Good point. The largest selection of tools is in M2 HSS, but M42 is starting to catch on. Check out Henry Taylors new line of M42. www.woodturnerscatalog.com/p/129/6894/Henry-Taylor-M42-Stay-Sharp-Bowl-Gouge

    Very good video thank you. I use CBN grinding wheels and I am told to only use HSS on CBN. Having said that, I was given a spindle gouge and have no idea if it’s HSS or not. How can I tell without using it on my CBN wheels?

    • @CraftSuppliesUSA
      @CraftSuppliesUSA  6 лет назад +2

      What's the brand of the tool? If you don't have a name brand tool, you can test it on a regular grinding wheel. If the tool creates a mild amount of sparks, then it's HSS. If it sparks excessively, then it's most likely carbon steel (which cannot be used with a CBN).

    Based on the current prices of the Kryo tools and the M42 tools, their pricing is backwards. Kryo are cheaper and give you almost as good performance for about 25-30 percent less money. That being said the video is still very informative. Thanks.

      @tristanphillips8937 2 года назад +1

      He is incorrect, I’m pretty deep into the weeds about heat treatment and I can tell you that no matter the heat treatment m2 can’t give you the same performance as m42. However proper heat treatment is very very critical and a cryogenic treatment gives you at best 5-10% better properties. Not double.

      Hey A6,
      It is still fairly accurate, with the only new steel for woodturning tools being the M42 Cryo.

    M42 steel is the clear winner. The graphic in this video were likely lifted from readily available graphics online. What the video does not address is M42 steel sourced offshore does not test to the same standards as US-made M42 steel. Beware statements like “American manufactured”, which is often misleading, unless the statement includes “of US materials”. And as for “the best money can buy”, that depends entirely upon the opinion of the person shelling out the money. For my money, I much prefer D-Way’s tools of US-sourced steel.
