- Great HD footage of the Raptor from Saturday's show. I did my upmost to get steady footage, as holding the camcorder smoothly at maximum zoom was very difficult in the wind. I recommend you play this through external speakers because I recorded the sound on an external microphone with deadcat to deal with the wind, so it gets very loud and you computer speakers won't be able to handle it well.
Absolute beast of a jet, respect from UK. Shame production was ended.
+Klarg Thanks to that arrogant prick Robert Gates, instead of continuing production of the proven F-22, we have the problem plagued and over budget F-35. In the end, we'd have saved fucking $$$BILLIONS$$$ by now if we'd have just stayed the course with the F-22. We could've also built a navalized version, and still come out paying less. That's not to say the F-35 won't be a world beater in the end, it's still a promising aircraft. But Gates and Congress got it all wrong.

The takeoff and vertical climb were astonishing, as were the power and maneuverability of the aircraft. What is publicly known of the F-22 is impressive indeed, scary. Yet much of her capabilities are classified. Potential enemies will be wise to steer clear

Raptor and Typhoon are both great for different reasons. Typhoon was designed to be aerodynamically unstable so that it can outmanoeuvre other aircraft. The F-22 might not be as agile but isnt exactly lacking in agility. But the F-22 can destroy an enemy aircraft before it is even in sight so some would say it doesnt need to be agile. Some say its ugly but its designed like that because to a degree it is also a stealth fighter. As a Brit I much prefer the Typhoon but I imagine theres alot of Americans who would differ.

With an internal load, the F-22 can do all of these maneuvers fully armed. Any plane with weapons on the wings will never be able to fly as well. Also, it has 2d thrust because it makes the engines more stealthy. 3d thrust vector gives the plane a higher RCS, with little advantages in its place. The US already tested 3d RCS with the F-22, and found that the stealthier 2d was the better option.

The F-22 has a better vector angle than any Russian thrust vectoring plane, it doesn't need 3D vectoring - As long as the pilot is taking advantage of his pitch, he will win any dog fight.

The Typhoon supercruise speed is Mach 1.3
The F-22 supercruise speed is Mach 1.7.
The Typhoon max speed is Mach 2
The F-22 max speed is Mach 2.2
Even from the UK, I can admit that the F-22 outclasses the Typhoon in all aspects.
They are both tremendous aircraft. Both have different qualities that make them exceptional. The Typhoon is no joke, it is a legitimate threat to the F22. The speed difference might not matter in aerial combat so they are both very great fighters. I do personally like the F22 though.
Typhoon is a tremendous aircraft. I haven't researched it but it looks like it's radar cross section would be far greater.

@@heathfitzgerald363 how much speed you bring into a dogfight matters, I believethey call it energy, owever I doubt you will be fighting and turning at top speed. How you manage your speed in a dogfight I believe is what matters. If you chase an opposing aircraft with too much speed, you could overshoot your adversary and end up in his cross hairs. I'm not exactly sure how you meant speed actually matters but in context to my comment you might want to reevaluate your assessment of speed. I mean the sr71 blackbird is very fast, let's see it in a dogfight.....I know I know, it's not a fighter....you gotta calm down
they say the f22 and f35 cant fly in rain in the start i guess when we wanted to show it in an airshow you dont want low hanging clouds and rain to show it off every US equipment is tested in Alaska just as cold and rainy as anything in Russia

The Typhoon is not "Mach 2+" in ANY sources I have. All say Mach 2, where some aircraft get a "+" it doesn't.
The F-22 can go to Mach 2.2 at up to 65,000 feet.

Not a fanboy. Eurofighters are good but not this good. I know that these birds went up against clean Eurofighters in a red flag exercise when the raptor wasn't clean. It had external fuel tanks on it so that the Raptors didn't have to fight unfair with the advantage of stealth and agility. A clean internal loaded raptor would have a sustained turn rate of about 28 degrees/sec. Eurofighters don't come close top that, not to mention F-22's superior high alpha capabilities. Then we add stealth...
Da USAF will not reveal this birds' max speeds. They say it cruises at mach 1.8 w/out afterburner. Now, most jets cruise at about 500 mph. Add afterburners and that speed almost doubles, even triples. Do da math: da f22s engines provide 70,000 lbs of thrust, same as the legendary blackbird. So i can safely assume dat this bird is in the mach 3 range, maybe has high as 3.5 bcuz it's lighter than da blackbird.
It can theoretically go to Mach 3 with ease. The F119 engines each 35000 lb of thrust equal that of the SR71. However the structure of the plane and skin are not designed to withstand such speed and stress. But the F22 is probably faster than the F15 which is a legitimate Mach 2.5 jet. It is defenitely faster than the published speed of Mach 1.8. That is a gross underestimation.
jeffrey exposito Each F119 puts out 38,850lbs of thrust each on average. It's in the 35,000lb class, but it puts out slightly more than the base class rating.
Just wonder if the engines would still function at those speeds too? The intakes have an important geometry to handle the shockwaves around the inlet. The faster you go, the more shallow the shock angles become and they can really mess with the engines.

Well there's a point I can agree with, the Vulcan display is amazing, haven't seen it well over 20 years, (Abottsford,B.C. Canada,) There's much more on the net regarding the F-22 if one searches. Not classified, just "not talked about". Pre-coating test pilot flights reports, at real altitude, speeds from 2.75 to flirting with mach 3. thrust 39,000 per.(L&M, PW numbers NOT USAF) earliest block EFs scheduled for retirement. F-22, 20-30 years with upgrades.Not argue,correcting a false picture.

They buy mostly US plane as well European planes because the IDF knows by far what planes are superior in dog fighting and maneuver's. When they were the first to buy the untried F16 and F18's before it was use in combat the IDF with these planes have never fell short from having air superiority even when Arab countries used the latest and greatest Russian planes, those MIG planes were blown out of the sky by the IDF in US warplanes. Now the IDF wants to buy the multiple F22's, why they tested it and know that it will put the IDF in Air superiority for the next 20 years.

Sorry to disappoint you, but the other guy is right. The Raptor can do mach 2.25 at altitude, where the Typhoon can only manage mach 2. The Typhoon, however, can carry a great deal more ordnance than the Raptor, which kind of balances things out.

At least! more importantly, the lesser ordinance of the raptor is internal, put the typhoons external ordinance on and that "mach 2" drops how much? 1.5, probably less... if that's "balanced out" oh well, oh yes, at altitude, ACM at 65,000 for the 22, EF? oops... Add in T.V. and stealth? draw your own conclusions...

Xristos Koukoumis There is not one case that I could find in any joint US-GREEK air combat exercise where a Greek pilot out maneuvered an American pilot who was flying an F-15, F-16, F-18 or F-22! I looked at all the Red Flag meets plus all then Homestead AFB air combat exercises and training missions. Homestead is where the Greek pilots learnred to fly their Ameerican fighters, they learned American fighter tactics which they follow as their way to fight. I could not find a single Greek pilot who was credited with an air to air victory vs an American pilot. The US military keeps records of every combat mission, training exercises, dog fight whether during war or peace time to evaluate each pilot which goes toward their pay increases, rank and standing in their squadron. I work for Pratt & Whitney military propulsion systems at our hangar/offices at Edwards AFB in Southern California's high desert. I've been with P&W for 24 years as an engineer. The last 7 years I have had a new element added to my job, the upper management at P&W put together a 4 man engineering and mechanics team to assist all partisapants in Red Flag or Green Flag exercises that operate P&W propulsion systems that have any problems during the exercises. I know of any Greek pilots that have stood out at all and the pilots I see during my work day have all said the Greek pilots are basically not very good at air to air combat and ground attack. They have a very low rating amongst pilots from around the world.

Slow to get up and very slow manouvres, very angular and ugly.
Perhaps 'slow manoeuvres', but in a combat situation the enemy aircraft would still be completing its turn about a quarter of a mile away. Not that dogfights are particularly relevant these days.
The slow manoeuvres are deliberate. The pilot is showing he has full control both pre and post stall. That was an impressive display. At combat speeds it's as agile as anything else out there:-)

***** Yes, correct. The lightning had its origin back in 1942! The F15 somewhere in the late 60's due to Vietnam experience and also the appearance of the Mig25. They come from different eras. The lightning, like the Starfighter, was a cold war interceptor. This is fighter v bomber. Its only role was to take off, climb to height and hopefully intercept high flying soviet nuclear bombers, later supersonic bombers, then return to base, rearm and do it again. It was made obsolete with the advent of the ICBM. It had very high performance for its day and it was difficult to catch, but it was also temperamental, and had very short range as we all know. More than 40% of them were lost due to accidents, mainly airborne fires. (I don't think you would lose that many in a war!) That was all it had. Its avionics were virtually non existent. The F15 however, had all the performance of the lightning, had much more range, was reliable, highly manoeuvrable and carried 8 missiles and a gun. Oh, it also had the An/APG-63 radar. I know which one I would prefer:-)
