    This was MY platform. 26+ years in the US Air Force. I spent 4 years dedicated to this absolutely gorgeous airframe. To this day, 20 years later I miss them very much. To start, the cockpit inside is designed like a fighter jet more than a 'heavy' because they have a control stick for this HIGHLY maneuverable platform rather than a standard heavy yoke control. These are so powerful that when they fly over you they actually change your heart rate and breathing pattern due to the sound (air compression + frequency). 35,000lbs of thrust per engine (x4). These are literally capable of Mach 2 + despite what they tell you. They actively outrun fighter intercept because on radar they expect a slower aircraft, yet once engaged they can hit the gas and just say goodbye. When they takeoff at night under full thrust you can see the afterburner flame literally bounce off the runway back up at a 45degree angle due to the extreme power they possess (think 5ft+ or 2m of flame). They have terrain hugging (vertical axis) auto pilot meaning they can hug the ground at low altitude and very high speed for surprise attack. Also terrain avoidance in the horizontal axis to stat at the same altitude but avoid obstacles and avoid radar pings at the same time. These can carry more ordinance than a B52 at supersonic speeds. And I can't tell you about the defensive/offensive capability but those aspects would truly impress you you will have to trust that one without the data.

    These aircraft are based at Dyess (DY) in Abilene, Texas...my hometown. I was just a kid when the first "Bones" were delivered in 1985, and they've been a constant presence over our city ever since. I now live about 15 miles away from Dyess, but every B-1B takeoff still shakes my house. It's a comforting feeling. The Bones will eventually be phased out, and Dyess and Ellsworth will be home to the new B-21. But we'll miss the rumble of the venerable B-1B!

      I remember the 1st one. It was on a Saturday, I was 14. Dyess had an open house that day, but we lived on the corner of Arnold BLVD and Texas Ave in that trailer park ( the back gate at the time). The news stations were set up on base expecting it to arrive at noon and it came in early, low and fast on purpose. Blew people's minds. I do believe thats the one that is on display at the front gate now.

He'd been in the RAF so he was interested in aviation. I remember well driving past this base with him, I couldn't believe that you could see all these US aircraft in the British countryside. TBH I don't know if it was Fairford or not, I'm just guessing it was, it was down south somewhere anyway, and clearly visible from the road.

    The loudest sound I've ever experienced in my life was a B1 taking off from Long Beach, CA municipal airport as I believe it was connected to a maintenance facility. I was coming home from work and it was starting to get dark but as I exited the freeway I noticed its silhouette. I pulled in to a parking lot next the runway and I was about 300 yards from it. It was so loud that as I recorded it, I was getting pain in my ears and I had to take the hand holding the phone and put it over my ear. Because it was dusk, you could see the afterburner cone shooting back another 50 yards or so and you could see its alight engines well into the evening sky.

    Thanks for bringing back memories. Both good and bad. I was USAF '78 - '82, TDY most of the time working on communications equipment and installations. Months of that time was spent at Edwards AFB where they were testing this thing.
    While the memories are great in the number of unusual aircraft we saw, this particular plane is the one I truly hate.
    It cost me my hearing for the most part.
    You see, my job in the AF was to install and test out commo equipment, cables etc. we worked outside mostly. At Edwards there was a manhole that was a central point to feed out to the rest of the base. This thing was more or less aligned with the end of the runway and about 500' from the end of it. This was at the time period where the B1 was coming online.
    Here's the rub:. because of our job we were never issued ear protection. We couldn't really use it anyway due to the work.
    So, when this thing took off it came over us at about 300 to 600 feet, always chased by 2 F-111's. There is no way on Gods Green Earth to describe just how loud that was!!
    The noise was not even external! It was...just... everywhere. It would vibrate your bones, make your eyeballs feel like that were popping out at times. It came as a vibration from your spine to your brain and was overwhelming.
    We hated seeing the thing coming out of the mirage laying on the runway, you could always tell it was coming from the noise a mile away or more.
    It's a fine airplane, I'm sure, I just personally have a grudge against it.
    And, yeah, I'm mostly deaf. It stinks!

    Non pilot here- do the B-1's always use reheat/afterburn when taking off? Just curious. Great video BTW!

      It's standard for planes with afterburner to use it for takeoff.
      It gets them up to speed and off the ground quicker.

    • @danielh1708
      @danielh1708 Год назад +3

      @@michaelpcoffee No, it is not standard to just use afterburner in every aircraft with one. Some use it due to operational need, some use it due to runway length/weight, some use it simply to show off to the crowd. But its NOT just standard.

      Every plane with afterburner I have ever seen always used it to take off.
      You say they were exceptional.
      Remarkable that exceptional can be so routine.
      Now; I need to find a video of an afterburner equipped plane taking off without it.

    If there's a louder plane flying right now, I'd like to know what it is.
    I was at a NASCAR race a few years ago, and they flew one over the track very low & with AB's on. I almost had internal organ damage after that. It was far, FAR louder than the cars (collectively)...

    • @altair7001
      @altair7001 Год назад +1

      Any Top Fuel dragster race in the US is much louder than that, although it lasts only a few seconds (luckily) 😉

      @@altair7001 Oh - I completely agree. I've been to a few of those races, and that is beyond reason.
      Had a friend of mine that was filming one for ESPN back years ago. He wanted to get between 2 of them when they took off. He had plugs and sound-canceling headphones on. When they took off, the sheer power of the concussion when they left literally made him sick. He had to throw up and was ill the rest of the day.
