When I, female, was active duty, officer, I had an occasional experience with snippy people in the BX or commissary when I went in after my duty hours and in civilian clothes. It ended quickly when they saw my ID. Customers were another matter. Both men and women assumed that I was the dependent, not the member. It was funny when a dependent spouse tried to pull her husband's rank on me.

I always treated the people at the PX with respect. They always provided us with enough beer to be able to make it through the week. You NEVER bite the hand that feeds. Don't think I ever ran across rude workers. Rude soldiers, yeah. but we would set them straight regardless of rank.

As a military brat every commissary I ever went to and there have been many since dad was in the Marines for 20+yrs , they always had an attitude towards military dependants who were minors. One afternoon I went off and base cómmander was in there. He said they need someone with my grit and attitude to take over running the place and wanted to pull strings to get me hired. He was astonished to learn I wasn't old enough to legally work anywhere since I was 12 at the time.
Base Commander laughed his ass off when I called the front end manager a bitchy old trout , then tell the cashier to go douche with Drano and die.

I edited this for clarity. Not strictly on topic but that cashier/manager story reminded me of when I was an on duty Military Police Patrol Supervisor (will not say where) and did a pass thru of our commissary on a Sunday when it was closed. I observed a well dressed guy coming down the steps with several bags of groceries so I stopped him to ask who he was and why he was carrying out the bags. He identified himself and and stated that he forgot the receipts and were on his desk. I radioed the desk Sgt to verify his ID due to the circumstances. He was verified but no sooner than the radio went dead and it went live again with a call from our Criminal Investigations for me to hold him and they would be there in 2 minutes. My desk Sgt later told me that that guy was under watch and I had caught him red handed. I think it goes without saying what that meant. I did not hear the results because I was due rotation in 3 weeks and transferred a few thousand miles to a new duty station.

Good story. Catching the crooks is always a challenge. I read on line tonight about a smuggling ring which was stealing and selling rifles, grenades, armor, and C-4 out of an armory. The two individuals were EOD in Afghanistan; one was a SFC still on active duty and the other had been discharged. Both are now waiting for their trial and then sentencing.

Many, MANY, years ago, I was stationed at Kunsan AB in South Korea. The BX at the time had an American Manager (AM) and a Korean Assistant Manager (KAM). One day I am in the BX looking at clothing. I find a couple of shirts and go into the changing room to try them on. I figured they would fit, but I just wanted to be sure. Anyway, I am looking in the mirror that was attached to the inside of the changing room door. I must mention that the changing room was basically 4 walls and no roof. As I am looking in the mirror, I glance up higher and in the reflection notice a security camera, pointed directly at the changing room.
I put my shirt back on (I'm a guy by the way), take the other shirts and leave the changing room. I went to the front desk and asked to speak to the manager. The KAM came out shortly and in perfect english asked what I needed. I proceeded to tell him about how the security camera is pointed directly at the changing room and wanted to know who thought that that would be a great idea, as the changing rooms were used by both males and females. The KAM immediately acted like he couldn't speak or understand the english language which was funny as he had been speaking it perfectly up to this point. I asked to speak to the AM and in a pidgin, heavily accented attempt at english, said the AM had not been in today and would be out the rest of the week. I found that odd, as I had seen the AM leaving the building when I was walking in 20 minutes earlier.
I asked him why the camera was pointed at the changing rooms and were they recording people while they were in there. He again acted like he didn't really understand what I was saying, so I asked him to follow me. He didn't want to, and told me that I was causing a scene and that I had to leave the BX or he would call the Security Police. I told him to please do so because I wasn't leaving. He told one of his employees to try and force me out of the building. I told him that if I was touched I would consider it assault and would defend myself accordingly. I saw another customer and asked them to use the phone to call the Security Police. The KAM told the customer that the phones were only for business use and they couldn't use it to call. The other customer, who just happened to be a MSgt with the Security Police (Gotta love it when a plan comes together) asked why I needed them. I explained about the camera, and about how the KAM wanted me out of the store for causing a scene about it. The MSgt picked up the handset and started to call his office. The KAM hung the phone up and tried to stop him from calling. The MSgt told him that if he did that again, he would get to see the inside of the Security Police office.
The call was made and the OIC (officer in charge) showed up and they took the KAM to the back office. About this time the AM showed back up. He wanted to know what was going on and the MSgt told him to come to the back office to look at the security footage. Later it came out that the camera HAD been capturing footage of people in the changing room, both male and female. The KAM and another associate were written up because while it was obvious that they knew it was recording people undressing, they couldn't pin it on them. The two involved were later let go I am assuming because I never saw them in the BX for the last 6 months of my tour at the base.
I am thinking that the KAM wanted me out of the BX so that they could get a ladder and change the camera angle. Can't prove it, but that was my suspicion anyway.

About moving the pond -- previous owner had (? maybe) an arrangement with the neighbor. If there was nothing in the property exchange agreement for the new owners, then an issue in Court might be trivial since it didn't involve current owner. As the issue is "resolved" then plant a further blocking landscape along that wall, (I.E., "erosion control") with berries (for birds and wildlife), and for privacy. Your county agricultural extension can help.

At a lot of the larger bases, the PX is attached to like a mini-mall. A few stores, a food court area and some cart/kiosk type businesses. I worked for a couple years traveling to different bases as an vendor doing cart/kiosk business in the mini-mall connected to the PX. I have to say, i met some of the best people and worst people who worked in that area. Particularly the managers. Maybe it's part of the military culture, but some of the manager POS's revel in working within the EXACT letter of a rule or reg, while crapping all over the actual purpose or spirit of that reg. Most of the soldiers, sailors, and officers i did business with were top notch human beings. That part i loved. And some of the managers made me love going to certain bases. But the bad managers? Wow, way worse than i ever encountered doing business in the civilian world. And that is saying something, because your typical mall manager or assistant manager, are not usually stellar human beings.

I never had a problem with the Commissary staff at Ft. Greely in the early '70s, but several retirees gave me a bunch of crap for shopping there. I was on Separate Rations, since I worked on the old base with no mess hall. It was an AFRTS Radio and TV station where you were lucky to get to the restroom on the other end of the building and back before film broke or equipment failed. I was typically there for 20 hours, the days thatt I was on duty.
These jerks were running stores in some Inuit villages, and would be waiting with trailers when the deliveries were made. A lot of the time, ll I could get was the worst junk food, like pastries. I nearly got into a fist fight over a tray of 24 cans of Mountain Dew. The jerk told me that he didn't give a damn if I went hungry, that he had customers waiting.

When I was young (and before I started my 30+ year career job) I worked part time at a Navy base's commissary in central Florida. Those of you who lived in or around Orlando pre-1994 know what base I'm talking about. Anyway, the job was easy. Just wipe down tables, the kitchen counters, sweep the floors and change the trash cans. For some odd reason there had to be three of us working that job at all times even though the commissary was so small you could barely seat 50 personnel. There wasn't enough work to keep even one person busy. As you probably have guessed, my co-workers were the laziest punks you could imagine. (We were all fresh out of high-school.) When I was on shift, they simply sat out back, talked and smoked. (This was pre-cell phone era after all.) I quit in 1990 to go to my full-time job. One of the laziest of the punks told me I was an idiot for quitting such an easy, high-paying (well, for the time it was) job. Since I had a friend going through the base's curriculum during the early-nineties, I found out that the lazy punks had a rude awakening a few years after I left. A Navy commission had instituted the "1993 Realignment and Closure" (BRAC) program and the training center was suddenly on the chopping block. The base was shut down in phases until the last class graduated in December 1994. My friend was sitting in the commissary with class-mates some months before the complete shutdown discussing their upcoming plans after graduation when he witnessed what he described as "the saddest early-20-somethings still dressed like teenagers" grousing about what they could possibly do for a job now that the base (and commissary) were shutting down. Yeah, civilian jobs on a military base can be good. But don't count on them always being there.

I know the feeling about the short life of bases. I worked for the Army for a bit over 38 years (active duty and as a civilian). In that time span I went through three BRAC realignments as well as a number of downsizing events. I managed to keep my job but my duties changed every time. In some cases I transferred to another post just before the decision was made to close the installation.

Regarding the commissary segment: "... he [OP's military husband] should 'control' my behavior." So the military chain of command extends to military spouses? Does that mean an officer or NCO can order a subordinate to order their spouse to do something? Does it reach down to the children as well?

    • @bradgaines5091
      @bradgaines5091 2 года назад

First, there seemed to some kind of sexism going on where the male service member is expected to give orders to his wife, and she's expected to just obey (which certainly wasn't the case in most instances I saw, though for a very few of them I wish they had, as an entitled dependapotamas can be the worst type of Karen). Alternative is those two idiots were looking to cause as much trouble as possible.
As for the chain of command extending to spouses, not officially. But if a spouse does or says something the command doesn't like, there have been cases where they took it out on the service member by punishing him/her for something that would normally be ignored, denying leave requests, poor evals, giving crap work assignments or watch rotations, and other assorted pettiness that makes their life miserable (the list is more or less in descending order of likeliness to be used, as they require more things to be made up), and disrupts home life as well. And since it is all things the command is allowed to do for reasons very easy to apply regardless of how accurate they are, there isn't much that can be done about it. Grievances can be filed, but it's at best questionable if it will go anywhere. And there's nothing stopping retaliation for the grievance, especially if it doesn't get looked at. The only other option is in case of a perceived unjust punishment, as a court-martial can be requested by the one being punished, but that then risks even bigger problems.
That said, the exact same tactics are about the only way of dealing with a spouse that actually is causing problems, as the only way they can be punished directly is by revoking on-base privileges.
Besides that, when spouses are together, it's not uncommon for the spouses of higher ranking members to act like they have authority over those of lower ranking members. And oftentimes they just have to suck it up, for the reasons of spouses pissing off the command previously mentioned.
The type of office politics bullshit that occurs in the civilian world also exists in the military, except that in the military they can't be fired as easily.

Most certainly it does. Misbehave and they can punish you, your spouse and your children. They can also revoke your base privileges even if you are married and your residence is on-base housing. Doesn't matter if you're the husband or the wife.
Local base here has a published decency guide signed by the base commander, aka, it had might as well be a written law. Go ahead, violate it, find out what "base privelege" means.

An ID had to shown at the door, by people in civilian clothes, at the entrance to a commissary, PX(BX), or a movie house. One thing is true. A serviceman is responsible for everything a dependent does. My ex-wife were 30+. She was the reason for my getting barred from re-enlisting. I little more than a year left. That's probanly the reason that I was not Court Martialed, dishonorably discharged, with a Federal Felony on my record, after 90 days in a Federal (Military)Prison.
