I wasn't prepared for how big they are; I totally expected the thumbnail to be photoshopped exaggeration. I mean, the leopard was pretty small, to be fair, but still. Big civet. I actually saw a civet for the first time, the day before yesterday which was saturday. It was around few minutes to 10 at night. I was walking along the road and the animal was standing few meters from the road beside the bush. When I saw it I stopped walking and stared at it, it was also staring back at me. I didn't want to get closer to it or remove my phone and start taking pictures of it because I was afraid it would either run away or attack me 😂. The one I saw wasn't as big as the one on the video, but it was way bigger than a normal cat. I was able to see it because of the light poles along the road at the university area. There are also some forests within the university. It turns out those animals are common here in Tanzania, I didn't know about them until I saw one on saturday. I also came to realise that there are few people who keep them as pets.

For context, there are many different species of civets (or rather viverrids) and they are generally small, but that's an African giant civet (Civettictis civetta) and it grows up to 15-20 kg. Viverrids are also closely related to hyenas, and as it's clear from this species, once viverrids grow bigger and become more terrestrial, they start to resemble diminutive hyenas.
Here in Ghana the civets grow much bigger than this though they're now rarer I'm surprised people in the comments think this one is big😅.My father's farm was riddled with them and we tried to hunt them with dogs i remember they were more than twice the size of our biggest dogs and so fierce that it often took a gun to kill them if not they would seriously injure or kill ur hunting dogs

A civet (/ˈsɪvɪt/) is a small, lean, mostly nocturnal mammal native to tropical Asia and Africa, especially the tropical forests. Civets have a broadly cat-like general appearance, though the muzzle is extended and often pointed, rather like that of an otter, mongoose or even possibly a ferret. They range in length from about 43 to 71 cm (17 to 28 in) (excluding their long tails) and in weight from about 1.4 to 4.5 kg (3 to 10 lb). HERE 15KG+ ?
There are so many other interesting large african animals they never talk about, its quite baffling. Civet (its glandular secretion) has been widely used in perfumery for many decades until recently, when it got banned and replaced by synthetic version of it. Also the coffee bean controversial civet poop roast is another dumb human invetion. Civets used to be (maybe still are) massively farmed in Africa to make money for these same reasons.
No wonder the leopards are confused because a civet is a small, nocturnal, carnivorous mammal with a long body, short legs, and a bushy. They probably thought it was night time.
No, it's a name similar to tortoise where a few families of animal that aren't particularly closely related to each other and animals from within those families may not be considered civets (binturongs and the fossa for instance). They are somewhat related to cats as they're within the same suborder (feliforms) but one group closer to hyenas and mongooses while the other isn't close to any other groups. In short, no they're not cats
Leopards really fumbled the bag there. That civet was ready for the taking like 5 different times and then it turns out the leopard had a partner the whole time too!?! Easy meal and they let it slip right through their paws!

I can appreciate the leopard's hesitancy because that thing looks like it won't go down easy.
I didn't know civets even existed. We always get to see the same animals, while some others go completely under the radar.
That's because Civets are mostly seen at night, they are pretty elusive in the day.
Damn thing look like a racoon and leopard offspring
That’s why Civets are part of Africa’s Secret Seven: The most elusive animals on the savanna.
I had no inkling that such an animal existed..
It looks like a hybrid of a hyena and a skunk..

I only ever heard of them a couple months ago. They come in many varieties, it’s weird we never even hear of one.
The civet looks like something that came back from extinction

There used to be one that can grow as big as leopards.

No raccoons in Africa of course. Although Civets are related to cats they can be herbivorous.
