    I've seen a drawing of an African civet in a book before, but there's a good chance this is the first time I've ever seen one on film. I wasn't prepared for how big they are; I totally expected the thumbnail to be photoshopped exaggeration. I mean, the leopard was pretty small, to be fair, but still. Big civet. I don't blame the leopard for its "understandable, have a nice day" reaction when the time came.
    And thanks to the channel for spotlighting such an obscure animal! You expanded a lot of brains today. 🧠

    I actually saw a civet for the first time, the day before yesterday which was saturday. It was around few minutes to 10 at night. I was walking along the road and the animal was standing few meters from the road beside the bush. When I saw it I stopped walking and stared at it, it was also staring back at me. I didn't want to get closer to it or remove my phone and start taking pictures of it because I was afraid it would either run away or attack me 😂. The one I saw wasn't as big as the one on the video, but it was way bigger than a normal cat.
    I was able to see it because of the light poles along the road at the university area. There are also some forests within the university. It turns out those animals are common here in Tanzania, I didn't know about them until I saw one on saturday. I also came to realise that there are few people who keep them as pets.

    • @HelenDiggs-o6e
      @HelenDiggs-o6e 8 дней назад

      I have come to realize humans will make pets of anything in nature? Some animal species are meant to be left alone,live or die out their natural existence,I could be skeptical that all animals are created by a God of Wisdom,I do believe there will be some cross-bredded,unextinguishable or even from below the Earth! (HOLY BIBLE). When the Almighty looses Satan to have his reign on Earth,I feel we will see unquestionable species only concocted by him to destroy some of mankind,I truly admire and appreciate God's animals and now is the time to get more Knowoedge concerning "last day revelations",GET READY! Not looking forward to hellhounds outside the doors,Seek all there is to know,now is the time! Be Blessed and informed for our Souls sake.‼️📖🙌🏽🤷🏽🤔🤝🏽🫶🏼🙌🏽🙏

    For context, there are many different species of civets (or rather viverrids) and they are generally small, but that's an African giant civet (Civettictis civetta) and it grows up to 15-20 kg.
    Viverrids are also closely related to hyenas, and as it's clear from this species, once viverrids grow bigger and become more terrestrial, they start to resemble diminutive hyenas.

    We call it in Zulu/ IsiNdebele. "Iqaqa"..It emits a very very , very bad smell and most predators including people and dogs can't withstand that smell.When I was growing in Rhodesia ( Zimbabwe) my uncle was a great hunter and we had meat all the time but his dogs would retreat and sneeze and run around in circles and discomfort when the qaqa, civet , squirted it's stink from its behind.. "Iqaqa liyanuka" :- The civet stinks..Iqaqa has no speed, it does not need speed to get away from anybody.No animal predator can hang around when it releases it's horribly smell..The only way my uncle would kill one was by a trap snare for the skin for traditional dances and garb..Even then after skining it the smell would remain with you for days..I can smell it now from here in Vancouver Bc Canada..I have lived in Vancouver for 17 years and I can tell you a skunk smells great compared to the qaqa, civet..

    A civet (/ˈsɪvɪt/) is a small, lean, mostly nocturnal mammal native to tropical Asia and Africa, especially the tropical forests.
    Civets have a broadly cat-like general appearance, though the muzzle is extended and often pointed, rather like that of an otter, mongoose or even possibly a ferret. They range in length from about 43 to 71 cm (17 to 28 in) (excluding their long tails) and in weight from about 1.4 to 4.5 kg (3 to 10 lb).

    There are so many other interesting large african animals they never talk about, its quite baffling. Civet (its glandular secretion) has been widely used in perfumery for many decades until recently, when it got banned and replaced by synthetic version of it. Also the coffee bean controversial civet poop roast is another dumb human invetion. Civets used to be (maybe still are) massively farmed in Africa to make money for these same reasons.

      No, it's a name similar to tortoise where a few families of animal that aren't particularly closely related to each other and animals from within those families may not be considered civets (binturongs and the fossa for instance). They are somewhat related to cats as they're within the same suborder (feliforms) but one group closer to hyenas and mongooses while the other isn't close to any other groups.

    Leopards really fumbled the bag there. That civet was ready for the taking like 5 different times and then it turns out the leopard had a partner the whole time too!?! Easy meal and they let it slip right through their paws!

  • @taurak81
    @taurak81 9 дней назад

    I'm not 100% sure what a civet is, but it is clearly not a very observant animal. It walked past the leopard while it was in the open and didn't even notice it.

    • @michaeldeierhoi4096
      @michaeldeierhoi4096 9 дней назад

      I don't think that was because it wasn't observant. I think that it instinctively knows it can take care of itself. The mongoose which is a distant relative acts the same way until an animal is too close.

    I have heard if a civet, just never seen one with that bright type of color pattern depicted in the thumbnail before, so it was kind of a letdown when the video started playing. Why the heavy color grading for the thumbnail? kind of a misrepresentation of what you actually encountered.
