@@scheisstag Oh, there is no right or wrong way. Guys like Shug are lucky that they just lay back and fall asleep in the same position that they wake up. I can't sleep on my back and toss and turn all night long, and for that reason I will probably never try a hammock.
@@KevinOutdoors Yeah, of course you are right and everybody is free to do whatever pleases him. This of course also includes wasting lots of money on hammock equipment. And if you want to try something new and hip for the time span of a weekend and you have plenty of money to waste, it will serve you well. But if you for example plan on doing a decent trip on a budget: like travelling with a bike from Europe to Thailand through all the high mountains and through all the windy deserts over the time span of some years, which also means through winter, or if you plan on staying one complete year and over winter in the wilderness to do animal research, than there are some good arguments for not choosing a hammock: -A tent offers privacy, which is extra important in countries like India or Bangladesh, where you will be surrounded day and night by up to a hundred watching people. - A tent offers you the opportunity to take the luggage inside, which makes it not only more comfortable to reach your stuff but its also safer for the luggage. I had unknown animals stealing my shoes from under the outer tent (which can be deadly in the wilderness) and I had humans stealing complete food bags from the same spot. Once I had a big group of wild pigs in the middle of the day silently eating the food stored inside the tent while I had a short nap inside the very same tent with open zippers. In one occasion I experienced a very severe snow storm in the mountains with high winds in one night, after going to bed the previous evening in calm weather and with no snow at all. I couldnt recover my plate and pan under one meter of snow the next day. Since than I prefer to take everything into the tent (And to close the zippers ! :-D). Which you cant do in a hammock. -A tent is more stable in really high winds. First because its built closer to the ground and can benefit of the cover of a big rock or snow wall therefore. Second because its closed and is not build like a tarp, which resembles a big wing with both sides streamed by the wind. And third because its stable and cant start swinging more and more like a hammock. -A tent can be pitched everywhere. Deserts, the arctic, high altitudes and cities are off limits for hammocks. -A tent offers some space: which is important if you get bad weather over a longer period of time. You can really start living in a tent, which includes heating it and cooking inside and even using the "toilet" for "number two" (shitting into your pot with a plastic bag inside) and collecting water, in the form of snow, in a tent with two entries: using one entry for collecting snow only and the other one for emptying your pee bottle to the sides and to enter through the middle. While a hammock is only good for laying down and sleeping. The longest I got trapped 24/7 inside a tent was close to a month in Greenland. I would have lost my ability to walk and my sanity, lying motionless in a hammock for a month. -And last but not least: you can have sex in a tent! So in short: -A tent is a travelling HOME, pretty much like a multi room house with a full functioning bedroom, a kitchen, a toilet and a bathroom. -A hammock is only the equivalent of a (single) BED in the open.
I’ve learned so many little tips from your videos, and together they make a huge quality of life improvement. Really grateful for them, even the simple ones!
In bad weather I’ve kept a small garbage bag to put the boots in at night. Keeps blowing snow and sideway rain out. The camp sites we hit seem to have mice so hanging the pack is necessary to keep the mice from chewing the pack.
I went out a couple of weeks ago for my first real hammock camping test... I tried both the ground method and the hang on my ridge line method. It was really dark and when I got back in my hammock, the pack (hanging on the ridge line) bumped my legs and I about had a heart attack! I forgot my pack was there 🤣 Anyway, love the updated video!
Shug, I'm going back through and binge watching your vids. Prepping myself for cooler weather hammocking. Your entertaining content is still better than most.
It all started with a diy video on tarps this winter. The poster said if I wanted to know anything about hammock stuff, to look up Shug. I've spent WAY too much time watching your videos, (even some circus stuff) and I am a long way off from my perfect set up, but I need to thank you for passing on all your knowledge , the laughs and inspiration. I am a fan for life. Sincerly. George
I can go to one channel and be educated. I can go to another channel and be entertained. Or I could come here and get both! Friggin' awesome. Definitely got to get out with the hammock more often and try out some of these ideas to see what works best for me.
@@shugemery That's the great thing about hammocks, you can buy what you need in stages as you can afford them or discover you need them and customise things to suit yourself. Tents tend to be a "take what you're given and pay for it all at once" proposition.
I do the same thing Shug, I keep a carabiner on the top handle of my bag, and just clip it to my hammocks single loop. My bag weighs nearly nothing when my hammock and sleeping gear are out of it. Actually makes a nice spot to just throw things in and out of. Then my boots get tied togather and slung over the other sides loop. Easy day! But I do have one thing I always do, luxury item I guess, I have a ground cloth under my hammock, I like my door mat, man!!
Shug I am one happy person that you are on RUclips you make my nights after getting off of work you are extremely hilarious and a very thoughtful person as well
I am a kayak-camper, so most of my gear is in roll-top drybags. It's easy to hang the bags from the hammock straps at either end. And since they're drybags, it doesn't matter if they're under the rainfly or not.
Really cool video Shug. Great tips. Your videos are always so enjoyable. My invitation to show you and Hickory the beautiful Red River Gorge in Kentucky still stands. And there’s Maple Trees!! Lol.
Perfect timing. Hung out this weekend at home in Vermont. Was warm went cold at night. My boots froze to the ground. One good pull and they were free. Made me laugh to see your video. Thanks for your videos and take care, Al
Hellos Mr. Shugs I see a lot of tips on how to keep warm in the cold weather I come from the weather where it’s already warm quite frankly damn hot in the southern California Palm Springs region. So how do you keep a hammock cool without sitting in front of an air conditioner? He who sings is hammocks of love in the northern land of winter fun. Cheers mate!!
I don't camp much in hot weather but a small fan hanging on the hammock ridgeline does the job. Hang in shade and a breeze. Hang near a creek. Only use a sheet to sleep in.

The Mule Rider Guy is the best! Lol I have a designated Dutch peak loft at my foot end for my trail runners to sit. I just lay them on a plastic bag to keep mud off the netting. Works pretty darn good!
I havent tried this before but when it is cold outside people have suggested putting boots in a grocery bag and put them in you under quilt to keep them warm.
I think that would pull your underquilt away from your hammock thus creating a gap and getting you cold. I tried in my Top Quilt once but the boots in there ruined my comfort. I'll just deal with them.
That's actually a pretty good tip, and your boots can still air out. I have always carried one with me but have never used it. I have a good use for it now. Thanks!

I carry a Helinox ground chair. That gives me the advantage of setting my pack and shoes in the chair at night. I usually am hanging high enough to keep the chair right underneath me. Makes it super easy to have access to anything in my pack during the night. If my shoes are muddy, I put them in a trash compactor bag I also always carry. Don't hate the chair, it is worth the weight for me.
Do you do anything special to keep boots thawed on a cold night? Maybe put them in plastic grocery bags and keep them with you under the top quilt? Or leave them on the ground and in the morning throw hot packs into them?
I always carry two plastic grocery bags(weighs nearly nothing) for sitting/kneeling on, collecting trash, etc but I’ll put a boot in each and their completely covered from getting wet and protected from bugs.
shugemery. Does it make your back hot in the warmer months? It looks like the MyTtail pack I have. I like it but I start to really sweat along my back. I’m interested in the packs that kind of arch the pack away from your back. Have you ever tried any like that? Thanks for your help.
Ha! The 4am call to pee, comes to us all in time. My boots have to be on the ground ready to receive my feet coz I ain’t hanging around when that call comes, and the least amount of time outside of my snug down the better. 👍
I've noticed that when my backpack is hanging on my head-end I get a better lay in the hammock. I may be hanging my hammock poorly on a consistent basis and the additional weight of my backpack seems to help things out. Maybe if I was doing everything right it would make my hang worse. I'm not sure why, but my backpack with a little weight in it hanging on my head-end definitely helps.
Which hammock should be my first? Double eno or Hennessy expedition? Or something completely different. Eno sounds good but for a little bit more the Hennessy sounds better
If you're wearing boots especially tall ones you can always nest the one in the other, top of one boot into the top of the other boot. It makes a u and would hold your pack up pretty well. A lot of folks aren't lucky enough to live in places where there aren't poisonous spiders ,snakes, and scorpions.
Shug, where have you been? I always look forward to watching your videos and I notice that they have grown further apart. And I haven't hear the Whoooooooooooo Buddy!!!!!! in a while.

What is strange is that I too teach at a university here in Michigan. Lastly, thank you for all the education and the entertainment. I am looking to get a new hammock. Which way would you go? I remember that older video. It was one of the first I came across. Strung out now. Peace.
Re-Boot!!!!
I always carry two plastic grocery bags(weighs nearly nothing) for sitting/kneeling on, collecting trash, etc but I’ll put a boot in each and their completely covered from getting wet and protected from bugs.
And for totin' trash out!
shugemery how’d you know my gf goes with me? Kidding!
Great video Shug, as usual
Whooooooo Buddy))))
Love the mule man! Bring him back!!
Bean’s rarin’ to go. 😜 Shug and Bean’s adventures on the Superior Hiking Trail! Woo Buddy!!!
Whooooooo Buddy))))
Just watched this.. watching you juggle at the end, I have to say... Your a BadA** dude.. keep on keepin on
Thankee feller. Keep on I shall for a while.
Love the looks of that backpack. New ULA OHM 2.0?
ULA Circuit. Had it a couple of years.
shugemery. Does it make your back hot in the warmer months? It looks like the MyTtail pack I have. I like it but I start to really sweat along my back. I’m interested in the packs that kind of arch the pack away from your back. Have you ever tried any like that? Thanks for your help.
I sweat anyways. I like the way ULA packs carry a load for my style.
shugemery. Last ? I promise. Would you go with the OHM or Circuit for long hikes?
Circuit if you want to carry more than 5 days food.
@ 3:06.....love that character!
Thanks. One take and just goofing. Mule Rider may be a keeper.

Do you ever use Leather boots...old school style...
My current bots have nubuck leather in them.....but are way lighter than those old leather boots of old.
meant boots not bots.
Awesome. Thanks. Another great video!!!!
Whooooooo Buddy))))
Thx 👍
Y'elcome.
What bag is the orange one under your legs that you pulled the plastic out of .
The Dutchwaregear Side Sling. Though i don't see it on his site anymore.
dutchwaregear.com/product/sidecar/
@@shugemery I contacted dutchwear and they are re-adding it to the web site.
Ha! The 4am call to pee, comes to us all in time. My boots have to be on the ground ready to receive my feet coz I ain’t hanging around when that call comes, and the least amount of time outside of my snug down the better. 👍
Too true.
Thanks.
Y'elcome.
Good to hear that is working for you.
Which hammock should be my first? Double eno or Hennessy expedition? Or something completely different. Eno sounds good but for a little bit more the Hennessy sounds better
So many hammocks. Like cars and shoes....down to you figuring that out. But I'd say Hennessy for camping....ENO for lounging.
@@shugemery more or less camping>lounging. Thanks. I'll see what happens👍
Go ENO for lounging.........lots of room for two.
Love this topic thx.
Whooooooo Buddy))))
Was that rater lookin' for mice in the wood pile?
Red squirrels!
What is the large orange pocket on the side of your hammock?
Dutch Sidesling
Are those the MSR Ti elephant stakes?
Camel Stakes.
If you're wearing boots especially tall ones you can always nest the one in the other, top of one boot into the top of the other boot. It makes a u and would hold your pack up pretty well. A lot of folks aren't lucky enough to live in places where there aren't poisonous spiders ,snakes, and scorpions.
Lucky in Minnesota...no scorpions.
Shug, where have you been? I always look forward to watching your videos and I notice that they have grown further apart. And I haven't hear the Whoooooooooooo Buddy!!!!!! in a while.
I have had other priorities lately.
Hope to get one out soon but it is a pastime.
Also I never had a schedule and just put them out when I have something to report or just in the mood. But I do have several I am looking forward to shoot and hope to get on the trail soon as my current project concludes.
I Only got one thing to say about that...........early !
@@shugemery Thank you for the reply. I know what it is like to be busy. I appreciated whoooo buddy!!!!!!!!
I have done many remodeling projects and know how that can be. What is strange is that I too teach at a university here in Michigan. I hope your remodel goes well and that you get the chance soon to get a purdy boil going and then relax with your Medaglia D'Oro
And a peanut butter paptart from the hammock.
Lastly, thank you for all the education and the entertainment. I am looking to get a new hammock. Which way would you go? Warbonnet Eldorado double layer so I can use a pad, or the dutchware half zipped double layer. I have had a grand trunk skeeter beater pro and it is time for an upgrade.
Nice vid! U had me rollin with that 2nd character 😂
Thanks. One take and just goofing. Mule Rider may be a keeper.
Thank you Shug San for another enjoyable video. We like Bean. How is the poor Vacuum ?
The Dyson vacuum takes a beating!
