Umpire is ignorant. Zverev is a champion for showing all the kids with Type I diabetes that you can be an elite athlete despite the chronic condition. He should be allowed to check his blood sugar level and give himself insulin on the court. The ATP needs to educate themselves on players with chronic illnesses.
The umpire enforces the regulations set by a board of commisioners , he is not there to question the rules , just to enforce them . Of course he should be allowed to check his blood sugar levels wherever he sees fit but not being allowed to do so has nothing to do with the umpire being ignorant .

I am a type 2 diabetic, and have found that when I play competitive tennis my sugar goes up, which is counter intuitive, as I should be burning up the sugar. I found it very interesting to see Zverev taking the insulin. Doctors have told me that it might be the result of adrenaline, that caused the rush of sugar. This was a great example. It should be known that Tony Travers, the last American man to win the French before Jim Courier was A diabetic, who against Doctor's order exercised and became a great athlete and champion. His experience helped change the way diabetics were treated. The focus became exercise and nutrition. Dumb direction/rule by the governing body.
Type 1 is very different from type 2......Zverev was likely taking the insulin to match the carbohydrates he was consuming during the match, not because of the adrenaline rush. Blood sugar does tend to lower during exercise but it can start with an initial rise. Also, there is much variability from person to person. People with type 2 diabetes never require insulin until late stages of the disease process if its not managed properly. I do think players should be allowed to manage their medical needs courtside.

He also may have consumed carbs before the match because he did not want to drop low quickly during a game. He may have just needed to make an adjustment. I'm surprised he does not wear a pump - it would help him stay in range.
That particular Umpire has a long history of being extremely fair and professional. I'm certain he was going by the rules and regulations determined by the ATP tour. Carlos is not allowed to make special exceptions for Sasha. We all know that lack of conditioning is something every player must deal with. Btw Sasha is a role model for everyone watching his handling of diabetes. Can't say enough positive things about him.

So weird, Medvedev going to toilet during crucial stages of the match interrupting the match flow while Zverev trying to STAY on court to get the Insulin he needs being told to do it on toilet. He should have won that match.
If he needed to give himself a shot, he should have gone off court to do that when Medvedev left, and they could have returned together. Pretty sure he gave himself a shot during his match with Medvedev at Indian Wells while on court that time. Apparently, he had been told he could no longer do that, and he knew it.

He does not have the luxury of planning out when he needs to give himself insulin based on when his opponent is going to the toilet. These pro tennis players take too much shit off the officials. Not letting a person go to the toilet for relief is not only narcissistic, it is unhealthy to hold it in. Sure they don't want people abusing the rules, so send an official with them. Just use an AI umpire, at least they might get ball calls right.

I am a type 1 diabetic and use exactly the same insulin pen, it is very brave of him, he can go hypoglycemic any time througout the match.
Even if just mild hypoglycemia (70 mg/dL), it affects everything from reaction time, thinking, stamina and of course, energy.
