    Lyrics:
    I'm leaving the table
    I'm out of the game
    I don't know the people
    In your picture frame
If I ever loved you or no, no
It's a crying shame if I ever loved you
    If I knew your name
    You don't need a lawyer
    I'm not making a claim
    You don't need to surrender
    I'm not taking aim
I don't need a lover, no, no, no
    The wretched beast is tame
    I don't need a lover
    So blow out the flame
    There's nobody missing
    There is no reward
    Little by little
    We're cutting the cord
We're spending the treasure, oh, no, no
    That love cannot afford
I know you can feel it
    The sweetness restored
    I don't need a reason
    For what I became
    I've got these excuses
    They're tired and lame
I don't need a pardon, no, no, no, no, no
There's no one left to blame
    I'm leaving the table
    I'm out of the game
    I'm leaving the table
    I'm out of the game

And to think that his body was so brittle from cancer to the point he would crack ribs from coughing...yet he recorded this.
He recorded this whilst laying in a heavily padded medical lounger.
His brilliance continued to shine throughout the pain in order to give the gift of his "Golden Voice" to his fans.
Leonard is well loved and so much missed.
I am thankful that I got to see him perform live two times.

That entire album is totally haunting and heartbreaking... We can hear the last steps of an old man, considering the wounds and the ephemeral joys of his past. After a long journey into the darkness, penetrated by some lightning, Leonard Cohen is now ready to "leave the table" and to close the book of his life for good : he did what he had to do. Thank you so much, dear Leonard, for all the beauty and the emotions that you gave to your listeners during all these years. It is priceless.

Merci ! C'est very understandable !

It takes even more than courage to write lyrics like that...it takes genius and it takes the grace of God. The Man had all three: courage, genius and the grace of God. Respect to him, thanks and Hallelujahs.

I don’t need a reason, for what I became. I’ve got these excuses, their tired and lame. This is the genius of Leonard Cohen. This album is a testament of a man going towards the sunset of his life but he manages to still entwine the darkness with insight and beauty. I am, and always will be a Leonard Cohen fan. His work is of an exceptional standard. Those lyrics, well, he never wastes a word. His message is honest, self deprecating and there’s some humour in there too. I never met the man but I miss him. I Saw him in concert here in Ireland and it remains the greatest show I have seen. The final album “thanks for the dance “ is a true masterpiece. It is sad , emotional and brilliant. This is what to expect from the great Leonard Cohen

Only discovered this man in 1969 - I know there are others out there who have known him for longer. To me, he was always like a friend. I sort of felt I knew him. He didn't know me. Since he's gone I feel things have changed and will never quite be the same. Colm, Dublin, Ireland.

I discovered him around 1998 when I won tickets to his show from a radio station in Seattle, didn't really know him, and I was mesmerized and gobsmacked. Even his many religious references didn't bother me :) I saw him again around 2009 and he was, of course, brilliant again. I feel so fortunate to have stumbled into him live and in person.
I highly recommend the tribute movie "I'm Your Man," with other artists singing his songs, which might not sound that appealing, but to hear Rufus Wainwright and all the others perform his songs is really something.

Bob Dylan doesn't normally do accolades.....Here's what he said:
'When people talk about Leonard, they fail to mention his melodies, which to me, along with his lyrics, are his greatest genius,' Dylan said.
'Even the counterpoint lines-they give a celestial character and melodic lift to every one of his songs.
'As far as I know, no one else comes close to this in modern music. His gift or genius is in his connection to the music of the spheres.'

    • @darrenr49
      @darrenr49 6 лет назад +8

or an acceptance of an unfullied life. "i dont need a reason, for what i became, ive got these excuses, they're tired and they're lame .... There's no one left to blame"
It seems he must've had some regret but has given up with the old tired excuses and with blaming people. Most of whom (parents, family, friends, colleagues, lovers) are probably dead now that he is such an old man. (at the time of writing)

    • @jschuler53
      @jschuler53 6 лет назад +4

He knew he wasn't perfect, he had his demons, and tried to deal with them, he was just being honest. We tend to glorify people who have written great, wonderful songs and poems, as if they had all the answers to life's problems.....Dylan has repeatedly said he doesn't and so does Cohen.
They are not prophets, or gods no matter how much they touched us, made us think, etc. And the beautiful thing is that both have said this about themselves. Dylan says I owe you nothing, I am NOT a voice of a generation. Despite their great music, it doesn't mean their lives were like that or even well lived. That is part of the beauty of LC, he has remained in touch with the everyday,
and I think Dylan went out of his way to avoid these labels. He once said that is too much to lay on anyone. Because of this, I think he was able to connect with so many people, and has somehow avoided all the trappings of fame that affect some in strange ways.

      Emma Emerson
Emma, then you might also like to know that Adjani is no Virgin Mary. But she had been divorced for some time, before she started dating LC. A few months ago I read an article/post by an Italian guy who had happened to meet her in a music shop in Austin, where she was working as clerk/shop assistant. He wrote he had recognized her and inquired after Leonard, who at the time was still on Mount Baldy. She said that she hadn't heard from him in a while...Then the guy says that he asked her out and she accepted. He boasts that she did to him what Janis did to Leonard at the Chelsea Hotel. I don't know whether to believe him or not.

the death of Leonard Cohen is a loss to the world . However his music and poetry will last for all time . He was not afraid to deal with subjects , many lacked the courage to do .

    I'm leaving the table
    I'm out of the game
    I don't know the people
    In your picture frame
If I ever loved you or no, no
It's a crying shame if I ever loved you
    If I knew your name
    You don't need a lawyer
    I'm not making a claim
    You don't need to surrender
    I'm not taking aim
    I don't need a lover, no, no
    The wretched beast is tame
    I don't need a lover
    So blow out the flame
    There's nobody missing
    There is no reward
    Little by little
    We're cutting the cord
We're spending the treasure, oh, no, no
    That love cannot afford
I know you can feel it
    The sweetness restored
    I don't need a reason
    For what I became
    I've got these excuses
    They're tired and lame
I don't need a pardon, no, no, no, no, no
There's no one left to blame
    I'm leaving the table
    I'm out of the game
    I'm leaving the table
    I'm out of the game

      "I'm leaving the table
      I'm out of the game
      I don't know the people
      In your picture frame
      This sounds like he is in an old lover's house.... someone he had not seen in decades.. ;
And the pictures show all pictures of her grown children; grandchildren; son-in-laws..; her deceased husband"..
I had an ex-boyfriend knock on my door the other week.. ended 10 years ago.... funny how if you do not have ONE MAIN LOVE since High school... instead you have a collection of lovers(or short term marriages)... that keep popping up in one way or another..
There grown children do not even KNOW YOU or what You mean to Each other.... not ever really IN THE GAME.
