  • In my opinion, at first Sam picked on Freddie because she couldn't stand him (not because she was in love with him) and Freddie has always tried to stand up to her. Once they start making iCarly they start to get to know each other better, Sam starts to value Freddie more and Freddie starts to accept Sam's personality. The trust and affection they have for each other is shown when they decide to share their first kiss, something that is very important to both of them, which is why they have not kissed anyone so far, they had the opportunity in the first season with Jonah and Valerie.
They still "hate" each other but... What people who hate each other will share such an important moment? Why would you tell a secret of yours to thousands of people to obtain forgiveness from a person you hate? Why would you consider someone you hate a close friend? Why would you give up a cruise you loved so much for a person you hate? Some will answer that it's because they're just friends but... so why this game of pretending to "hate each other"? This game is because they don't want to accept that they start to care for each other, to enjoy spending time together and to be important in each other's lives, because this change is not because they start seeing each other simply as friends, what they feel is stronger and what they know but they prefer to think that this strong feeling is hate and not love.
There comes a point where Sam can't help it anymore, she realizes that she is in love with Freddie and kisses him, she quickly regrets it and runs away from the problem. She commits herself to a mental institution to try to believe that her feelings are crazy but Freddie won't let her think so. For Freddie, the kiss that Sam gave him was what made him begin to accept that he might have feelings for her. He spent three days looking for her because he needed to know the reason why she kissed him, when he discovered that it was because she had feelings for him, Freddie also stopped denying himself his feelings for Sam and did not hesitate to let her know in front of millions of viewers.
They started dating and I have to admit these chapters almost made me stop shipping them but in the end they showed how in love they truly are with each other. The first week they fought over any problem because it is what they are used to, when they realized that this had to change they resolved it but then both Freddie's mother and his friends tried to separate them and finally they realized how different they can be to be. They never had a break and although they tried to make it work out, they realized that they were not ready for this relationship yet, they needed to mature and it seemed incredible to me to see that even though they loved each other, they are able to realize this and let the other go.
After the breakup we see how no one goes back to the way they were before. Sam begins to defend people she doesn't know, when before she was the one who treated them badly. While Freddie begins to be more self-confident and to do things that he would not do before. They learned all this from each other and I find it very nice to see how they helped each other's personal growth without realizing it.
In the last season Freddie has a crush on Carly again, this does not mean that he stops being in love with Sam, just that he is trying to forget about her. Carly has always been the prototype of the ideal girl for Freddie but he ended up in love with a girl like Sam. Freddie has never looked at Carly the way she looks at Sam, or smiled at Carly the way she smiles at Sam. Freddie tries to get him to like Carly again because she's an easy choice, which he's always wanted but as hard as he tries his heart belongs to Sam, he can't change that. I always thought that with Sam's departure to L.A. he began to realize it.
Many say that they are a toxic couple because of how Sam treated Freddie, and yes, at first Sam treated Freddie fatally and his family life does not justify it but nobody takes into account Sam's change, in the end Sam cares much more for Freddie , he even feels bad if he sees that he has been hurt. Sam's personality was based on his mother, spending time with Carly, Freddie and Spencer begins to discover that he does not want to be like his mother and seeing that he manages to change that personality to a better one seems to me something admirable and that few people want to see.
The development they had is unique and that is why it is very difficult for me to accept the ending they want to give them. In Sam & Cat it is shown how they are still in love despite not seeing each other for a long time, before the reboot existed I always thought that once Freddie finished university they would both meet again in Seattle and try again, this time much more mature and more sure of their feelings.
For me this is the end that his story deserves and the reboot will not make me change my mind.
