Yes, that makes sense since the Aztec "capitol" was on an island. They really made great use of chinampas, a really amazing form of floating agriculture that is several times more productive than land-based farming of the same period. Also as much as it pains some people to admit, the Aztecs were not a tribe or ethnic group, they were a member of a military alliance. A closer comparison is to the Livonian or Teutonic knights, conquerors who took culture and religion with them as they pushed forward, making alliances, enslaving people and settling the places they took.
