  • This Saturday Rub features Jim, Garry, Spud and Damo taking a call from "Simon Oldman" (Sam Newman) who was present for Garry's routine at the Comedy Theatre for the International Comedy Festival. He is on to give his review of the act, which comes from an imaginary American man named "Carlisle" - who he says is Sophia Loren's manager, and the grandson of Bob Hope. The Foss has definitely lost his marbles, but he's in typical Foss form. Jim tries to build it up to suggest it's someone outside of Triple M that's doing the critique because if one of their own do it, they wouldn't be impartial, which is to say, they "disappear up their own freckle" quite easily. Sam's first comment is to say that Garry was able to arouse an inanimate object - the microphone - that not even Jerry Lewis or Frank Sinatra could do. Sam goes on to say that when Garry walked out, the pheromones were off tap, but he prepared Carlisle with Garry's first line - the joke about how to catch a unique rabbit. Carlisle thought it was fantastic because on paper, the joke was awful, but it was the delivery and comic timing that made the joke. The secret to comedy today is enthusiasm and sincerity in the delivery, which Garry also had. I think all this is supposed to be sarcasm because he was not enthusiastic nor sincere on the night. Carlisle also noticed Garry's posture and how after a few funny gags, he began to stand up straight. Sam then goes on to discuss a joke that didn't quite come off, and I swear he trails off on a story that makes absolutely no sense. I reckon he has a stroke mid-conversation. Even Garry doesn't understand what the hell he's on about. So could Garry take this performance on the road? According to Sam, Garry could utilise his looks, his swarthiness and his hirsute appearance to America to become the next big thing. And Carlisle thought the routine was big enough to be mentioned in the same breath as the moon landing and Muhammad Ali's defeat of Joe Frazier. They bid Sam farewell, but it's hard to get rid of him as he goes on and on like a crazy old man.

Is it just me, or does anyone else not find Sam funny at all any more? Honestly thought this segment sucked.

FeathertopDT I actually quite enjoyed it. I might be one of the rare ones that still finds him hilarious.

***** I loved them hanging shit on Garry for the stand up stuff but Foss has just lost his comic timing imo.
