- 2015 Subaru Outback. All stock, only modifications are skid plates and a thicker rear sway bar (which makes it lift more).
Running Cooper Snow tires.

C'mon now - stop messing around in moms car.
Don't tell her I did this I don't want to get grounded again.
One of the best all round car! Off road capable, winter fun, comfort for ALL passengers, a lot of luggage space and towing capable up to 3000 lbs!
+G Subaru xc70 is next level over this one
Diego Diegosovich
You should of added: +10k $ for the Volvo!
+Diego Diegosovich Enjoy your volvos shoddy AWD setup. Subaru will leave Volvo behind as soon as they are off the pavement, factor in the factory LSD on my subaru and there is no comparison.
I love the new 2015, looks way better than the previous one. The way they have gone back to the - 2010 looks :)
when I got my 2014 outback I got alot of flack about how it won't handle off road. with the exception of rock crawling and heavy mudding, my 2.5 handles everything I can throw at it. a more aggressive tire than stock but other wise just as I drove it off the dealership and I'm in love with it more that I was when I bought it. love the vids
What tires did you get? I need new ones and I just had my first off roading trip where my suburu did everything, but It would have been better if it had better tires. I'll take any suggestions
Get a set of good mud and snow tires and that car will go almost anywhere
Actually "Mud and Snow" rated tires (M+S) is a marketing ploy. Those are simply All-Season tires. What you want is Snow rated all terrain tires with the mountain peak symbol.
@@tubemember21 or simply AT tyres.
Subaru has best AWD system on the road.
love the video. love the car. love the music. and the guys who filmed it are not your typical Subaru owners and are awsome.
And neither am I
That was pretty cool! Thanks to you both for having the guts to do this! The Subaru certainly appears to be a very capable vehicle. Obviously, I'm looking at this video on the basis of thinking the Outback will be my next car. Thanks again.
+Alan J August Thanks for watching! This is my favorite car I've ever owned, and it's fun to see what it can do. It does well in the snow too, if you're wondering. Check my other videos if ya wanna see.
I'm also a moderator on subaruoutback.org if you have any questions about it we can usually help out.
Interface is a little better than the comment section here.
That beard is on point
I love my Subaru Outback, and this Video is crazy goodness...that terrain is insane
Stay tuned for something even more insane. (:
Hey man, keep up the Subaru adventures! This video is actually quite inspiring, I hope you know that.
Good video. I'm car shopping at the moment, looking for a nice car that can also handle the roads I travel here, in West Virginia. LOL. So I not only enjoyed seeing what the car can do, but also listening to that song. Snork.
Thanks! I'm yet to find a road it can't go on. It's not a serious 4x4, but it can work on roads like this and drives like a dream on the highway. Which a serious 4x4 can't do. (:
Are you in WV? Check out the newer video I have of the same car driving in the blizzard we just got.
Pretty much says it all. Tells you why SubUru (thank you) is the vehicle of choice here.
Awesome. Can't wait to test out my recently purchased 2011 Outback come this season opener in backcountry.
brilliant mate. just got one and can't wait to test it off road ;)
Awesome car, I'm still trying to convince my dad of buying one of these as his next car. He wants a VW Caddy 2.0TDI 4-Motion (I'm in Germany), and I told him the Subie would be a way better choice, and it has that Boxer Diesel, too. Subaru unfortenately doesn't really have a reputation here in Germany, so it's kind of hard to convince a conservative Volkswagen driver.
I subscribed to your channel, love your Outback Offroading videos!
americanstylefreak I wish the diesel was for sale in the US.
Great video guys!!
Well done, that looks like a fun drive!(-:
Great vid!👌I love my crosstrek. Goes where I point it..
Awesome! video thanks for sharing
Nice video! Many of these get slammed by other off-roaders but Subaru has done a great job balancing between capability off-road and civility on road. I have a WJ Jeep and FJ Cruiser for this sort of thing but the Subaru would be my choice for hauling the family each day and Ohio snowstorms in the most comfort. Cheers!
Thanks Quadpit! Yea, it still surprises me what it can do.
Punching above its weight class
Bro I just took mine out offloading and my 2012 literally climbed a rock face. Regurlaly had only 2 wheels on the ground and it was the most amazing trip I've ever had. Out backs can do anything
My 5spd Crosstrek would be smoking the hell out of the clutch on an ascent like that. Def CVT territory...
I feel your pain... I had to turn around on trails that were so steep that my 5-speed manual Subaru XV Crosstrek would have its destroyed its clutch if I had proceeded on any of them.
This is where CVT is handy. A lot of people hate CVTs but that's only because they don't understand them.
Great vid.
Nice video, mans!
+Iskander Zulkarnain Thanks! I had a blast making it.
I've been on these trails with the quads.
WV Subie pride. Kick butt song to boot!
TCS off and you are on point!
Great video!! Whoever wrote the song needs to pay a royalty check to Lynyrd Skynyrd.
But they died 42 years ago.
OMG... that IS mad... in an awesome sort of way! :)
Thanks guys... proved this will take me where I want to go... I am a realtor lol and I have a cabin up a logging road I escape to . road my xt250 there. I think this will make it.
Glad we could help!
I could be wrong but looks like your tire pressures could us some adjusting. Still great effort for road tires
very good reliable motor !
Damn! You guys! Now I want to go buy one! Lol
It’s good to know that crossovers can do these kind of “soft” offroading. Most people don’t have the nerve to try it though. But Im impressed with it. Imagine if it was slightly lifted and had all terrain tires.
No need to imagine bubby. You can see all the hardcore soft roading in later videos with a lift and AT tires.
@@bruceyyyyy Great, I will check them out!
Nice video guys. Wife and I looking right now to buy a 2017 Limited Outback with EyeSight. Inspiring video for all to see. There are times to use X-Mode and time when not, same for traction control. You can turn that off too if you think you do not need it. Obviously you had traction control on during this whole video. Let me know otherwise. I keep it on in our 2013 Limited Outback all the time. Oh, by the way for snow tires in West Va. dude, I very seriously encourage you to look at General Tires, their Ultimax Artic snow tires. You can even get them studded. This is for everyone else out there Subaru owner or not, get 4 cheap steel rims and mount these tires with a high speed balance and there you go. They are insane in the snow and that is on my old Mazda 323 which is a front wheel drive one wheel squeel car and I can go through snow and ice 24 inches deep if the roads are not plowed. I am as serious as a heart attack...I am not lying! I cannot even imagine what they would be like on ANY AWD vehicle let alone a Subaru. Someone else please comment about those tires. Hands down they will greatly improve a vehicles steering ability, traction, straightness and not to mention add overall safety to your car in winter season. They are simply the best choice for a regular car, crossover, or small SUV which does not have AWD.
Check out my other video to see what the car can do with snow tires. (:
Also, I had traction control off, x mode on the entire video.
2 inches lift and bfg radial ats make a super difference
Fantastic. The head gasket issue just kills me.
What Head Gasket issue?
You can research it. They are notorious for it. And the newer ones are using oil. How many miles are on yours? @@bruceyyyyy
@brad h They haven't had head gasket issues on the FB series motor introduced 8-9 years ago.
The EJ motors had headgasket issues but there hasn't been one in an Outback since 2012.
Also mine is a 6 cylinder. It's not really known for issues. Just a bit more thirsty.
54k and no major issues.
@@bruceyyyyy does it have excessive oil consumption? Some have the opinion that synthetic oil is causing oil consumption.
I'm from wv that car did pretty good
Luv the song 😆
that's why i bought a Subaru Outback! I've the honor to find it Diesel Boxer CVT, what a great car! It's a Goat mountain car :D
Where are you located?
Thanks for making these and sharing your experiences. Do you find the suspension or ride quality on city roads to be harsh with that tire setup? Also what pressure do you run when in the city? Thanks!
It's all stock here. The tire rode good.
@@bruceyyyyy oh man my mistake. I was asking regarding your current setup with all-terrains. Thanks.
Ohhhhhhhhh. The current set up is very similar in ride. With the lift I noticed a little bit more lean in cornering. Completely ok with me as I don't drive aggressively. The tires make more noise for sure. (:
@@bruceyyyyy hmmm...wondering why mine rides so harsh over bumps and cracks in the street. What tire pressure do you like for city driving? I’m trying to figure out if something weird is going on but just had it aligned and inspected to be all good. Maybe I’m not used to the Outback on the Wildpeaks just yet, but boy can I feel road imperfections, and I’m running at 35 psi.
VDC is nice just have to give it some time to figure situation out , but some times you are better of with out it :)
Wish I had snow where I live down under. My outback and I would be having a whale of a time.
The Outback is not really designed for extreme off roading but nonetheless is a very capable car. In the UK, most enthusiasts use old modified 4x4s with AT tyres but the video at least shows what the Outback is capable of, and guess that's the point here although if I bought one, which is hopeful in the next couple of years, for me its the rugged dependability in bad weather and to cope with our shocking roads. Still not decided between this or the Shogun Sport though.
love subaru
Looks like a 2015 premium model, like mine:) My question is what size tires are they? Did your stay stock size or go bigger? I'm guessing bigger since they look All-terrain and I can't really find any in stock size, need to go 235/65/17 for that and not sure if it fits stock. thanks. get vids.
WOODDUCK DAN 235 will fit stock. 245 will fit with a lift. check my other videos for more info
Thanks, I' ll check it out.
Did you put it in gear "1" or "L" on the shifter? Whenever I've had my Forester stop wanting to go up while in "D"rive, shifting to "1" made a HUGE difference.
I have it in manual mode and select the gears with the paddle shifters. I typically only use 1 & 2.
Very nice video!
Is that Outback a 2.5 L or a 3.6 L one?
2.5
nice. what tyres are those? outback realy can do lot more with right tyres . must do smt similar too soon with mu OB '01
The tires are cooper avalanche winter tires.
Impressive video and thank you for saying what it can do and can not do. As Subaru fans tend to bath in excuses when a Subaru can go up 90 degree angle with two wheels in the air on a tight rope carrying an elephant 😀. I had a Subaru and instant traction is beyond, seriously slick small rocks steep road I will take a Subaru over land cruiser or jeep. I think Subaru only Achilles heal is the damn ecu and traction control get onto a fight and end up divorced when there is a battle of power between between the front or back wheels when the fronts completely loose traction for more then a few seconds. The car can be floored and none of the tires are rotating faster than a turtle because of the divorce. If being stuck and the car not moving tend to have the same result why not have a button you could push and it would revert to ground and pound mode with power 25/25/25/25 to go out as a hero or a zero. Obviously not ideal but just sitting there the car not moving and all your friends say "so go already I thought Subaru can go anywhere", and having to respond its floored, then wait for all of them to start cracking jokes the rest of the day. Currently I drive an Audi q7 because my job 'needed something more upscale as my client suggested", For sure absolutely not as good as a Subaru on gravel and loose dirt or icy slick conditions, it tends to shine slightly brighter off road as it's Ecu and traction control still fight but it's more like, fine do it your way, no you do it your way, fine I will do it my way, fine then do it already, it's done so shut up, great I love you let's get back together. Also deep powder way better as well. Before all the Subaru Cult members attack me. For the money, can't beat the AWD prowess of Subaru. Just can't dress it up for the ball after a day of hunting.
nice video, do you have separate wheels for your snow tires?
yes, separate wheels for street, snow, and off road tires.
Sweet
xmode 😥 go wagon go
Don’t underestimate these things! They are a wolf in sheep’s clothing.
just needs better tires for sure
Great video. I was thinking about getting a Subaru and would like to get a tow hitch put on. I noticed that you have one on yours. Could you please let me know what kind you have. Thank you.
Torklift 2" Eco hitch.
What engine is it? Just got an 2016 2.5. Thanks for the vid.
vsbracing 2.5
Is that the 2.5 4-cylinder, or the 3.6 6-cylinder? I'm thinking of getting an Outback, and I want the economy of the 4-cyl, but the capability of the 6-cyl.
+John Prothero 4 Cylinder. I would call it capable. (: I drove a 6 and it had more power, but power doesn't interest me. The only thing that made it tempting was how smooth it was. It really gave it a lazy kind of feel to everything.
+John Prothero Then you want the turbocharged Forester XT.
What kind of tires do you have? I'm looking for something but for 18" rims that are more rugged than the stock tires.
Jorge Salazar the ones in this video are Cooper/Hercules avalanche. I also run BF Goodrich KO2 tires.
Think people need to remember these cars are not designed for this stuff. as Subaru Japan says. It is designed for when the road gets slippy not off roading.
DOBERSTAFFIE Works fine for me (:
What sort of lift are you getting from the rear sway bar that you've installed?
Uriah Graves There is no lift on this video. The sway bar doesn't lift the car at all. The only modification are snow tires and skid plates. it's stock other than that.
Is that the stock tire size of 225/65 17. I want to put 235/65 17 on my Outback. Do u think it will fit ok either the stock wheels ?
It will work just fine. You won't even need a lift.
bruceyyyyy Would 245/065 17R’s fit without a lift? (And without rubbing?)
On stock wheels mine did not. It was very very close though.
great video! Do you have Xmode? I heard that if you have the paddle shifters you can use xmode and and go to a low granny gear. can you try this out if you do, and make a video?
I have X Mode, I don't believe there is an extra gear accessible. I think it simply changes throttle response.
+bruceyyyyy I believe it changes the ratio in the CVT so it acts like a granny gear. I saw them use it all the Outback review from Truck Yeah
+Brandon Brown jalopnik
I believe Grant Wilson might have mis-spoke. It's a CVT with a 6 speed simulation, I don't believe it's a lower gear for X-Mode, it just changes throttle response. Interesting though. Do you have any other sources on the lower gear?
PS: I wish it had a lower gear! Could have used it on Black Bear pass near Telluride last month. Check out the video.
I have the exact same car. A '15 Outback (I call it GOATback since it climbs just about anywhere). The X-mode function does the following: Keeps the CVT in a lower "gear", does not activate the converter lock-up clutch, softens throttle response and provide hill decent if you are heading downwards (includes reverse). While the car works great without X-mode enabled it sometimes helps a little bit. If you REALLY want to go with your wheels in the air you need to hit the button that looks like anti-skid "VDC" this allows the wheels to spin and it does not "takes your foot of the pedal" so you can really do difficult terrain with this car IF your tires are good enough. It needs a bit more ground clearance in the front, but except from that it can even put proper 4WD cars to shame sometimes :)
Maybe some Yokohama Geolander AT off road tires might help? I love my outback!
+Yoshi Yamamoto KO2's are my next planned purchase.
+bruceyyyyy nice! Tires really make a huge difference.
+Yoshi Yamamoto is that the only off-road tire that fits on the Subarus? I don't know Subaru have all-terrain tires that could fit on
There is actually a good variety of tires, but the KO2 seem to be the best all around. The only drawback is they are heavy, but I won't be running them all the time so it doesn't effect me.
bruceyyyyy I didn't even know they make all-terrain tires for crossovers SUVs. When I asked for it for my 03 Mitsubishi OUtlander they told me they don't make it for my vehicle... Because it's not a true legit 4x4 off roader like Jeeps or Land Rovers
where did you find the skid plate? I can't seem to get those for that vehicle
I believe it's from primitive racing
What kind of tires did you have on? Is this outback lifted?
Standard sized snow tires.
No lift.
Do you put it in the Xmode?
give it the right tires it'll be fine. this trail is nothing to a subi
I agree. I got BFG KO2's later for this car and went on some rougher stuff. There is some video of it, if you want to check it out. Have a lot of fun!
bruceyyyyy try
*_KM3_*
nice, is that a 4 or 6 cylinder version?
4 cylinder
I can smell the clutch from here.
+SpoonMan The car doesn't have a clutch. Or even gears, technically.
+bruceyyyyy Oh really? Sorry for the ignorance, i'm European.
+SpoonMan No problem. It has a CVT transmission, so it behaves differently than any other car I've driven.
Do you have a custom underbordy protection?
+test143000 Full set of 3/8" plates from Primitive Racing.
VDC off and X Mode on?
what's that white stuff on the ground
Hey where did you get skid plates for the bottom ?
+Zozik333 Primitive Racing.
Your problem with the last obstacle was probably due to the lack of a low range gear.
Makes sense. She's not a crawler.
also where did you get the skid plates?
primitive racing
Traction control off and on X-MODE when tried with 2nd time? on 3:00 min Thx
+Hansen Wang Yup!
Traction control the first time.
Off the second time.
Third time off as well, just stayed hard on the throttle.
+bruceyyyyy Yes, you always MUSTstay hard on the gas to make X-Mode work properly. You really have to make it spin the wheels as much as necessary to make X-Mode work good.
Great video!
WVa? ur my cuzzin !!!
2.5 or 3.6?
Is that the 6 cylinder? Or the 2.5 H4?
+Xenophene01 2.5
Two questions: (1) What county were you in when filming this? (2) What type of tires on the Sub? Original or something else.By the way, I think I'll stick with the original version of Sweet Home Alabama.Let's Go...................................!!!!!
Mon County.
Tires are Cooper Avalanche snow tires in stock size.
Mountaineers!
Turn traction control off and you'd have even less trouble.
+Ken Snyder Traction control was off. X-mode was on.
Ken Snyder you need wheel spin sometimes, and you needed it lol
Is this a public trail/road?
Yes sir.
That CVT does terrible in steep hills...I love Subaru, but CVT....
yes not a fan of subaru cvt thats why i only buy older subarus.
2010 outback. 336000 km +cvt. It holds together great and driving a vehicle with cvt makes a lot of sence really. So we decided that our new 2016 would have a cvt as well.
I've found steep hills aren't fun in my 6 speed manual 2011 Outback.
I own a 6 speed manual outback, but it's diesel, so it's a different story. I can let the clutch and creep up a hill without even touching the accelerator :)
I bet. That doesn't work for me. I was afraid on this one hill I wouldn't get up it, and we would have been pretty stuck. So I basically dumped the clutch with a lot of gas. I made it, but I could really smell it at the top. Not ideal.
the only strange thing why they pronounce it as subUru
after watching videos of the new highlander and rav4 i`m certain neither car would have made it 10 ft up this hill.....i love toyota vehicles but this subaru puts them both to shame off road...i would buy the tribeca over the rav4 and highlander for sure
X mode applied?
+Jim Lee Yes. X-Mode on Traction control off.
Does 2015 have X mode?
Yes
Is it a 2.5 or 3.6 engine?
2.5
Thanks!
Spencer C No problem! Check out my other videos as well! Have a lot of fun with this car.
what area of wv is this?
Michael Does Gaming Near cheat lake, WV
sway bar details please :)
aaronc608 What do you want to know? Subaru 19mm sway bar.
if it's aftermarket is it any particular brand?
aaronc608 it's a Subaru factory 19mm sway bar.
X-mode on?
Si
@@bruceyyyyy Why does it go so badly then?
I think it goes great.
What part of wv?
Near Morgantown
Im about 2 1/2 hours from there
Looks like a pretty tame trail to me...
To you maybe, but the point is you wouldn't take most average cars up it would you, especially if like most which are purchased on lease deals so people don't even own them. They have to return them without damage.
What's the song!
Trailer park princess by my friend, Nathan Highway.
And.... that's only with road tires, not at its best yet
Switch off traction control and you will get anywhere🙈😀
fuc....king subaru cvt 3.6l plenty of power to the motor but it made to protect the transmission that why you cant get more of it
