      @sandercohen5543 6 лет назад +24

      Well, almost all parts can provide lift. It’s just that this one is 2 empty fuel tanks with a huge empty volume. You can emulate this by firing up an emptied version of this craft and pressing f12 attempt to manouver it. The blue lines are your “lift” generated.

    This is a very smart use of built-in monoprop in the MK1-3 pod.

  • @connormauk3210
    @connormauk3210 6 лет назад +70

    For those of you complaining that he copied hazard-ish, read what stratzen wrote on his reddit post:
    "Not entirely. There are some things I did differently that made a big difference in terms of efficiency. For example, my craft may be similar in terms of the types of parts, but the way those parts are arranged make a BIG difference.
    For example, I used the MK1-3 command pod. This command pod doubles as a nosecone, which makes my craft much more streamlined than hazard-ish's. As a result, I can take a more efficient launch profile. Hazardish used 3543 m/s to reach orbit: I used only 3117 m/s.
    The mun gravity assist and the eve ejection burn also gave me big savings. For one, the mun gravity assist reduced the ejection burn by 100 m/s, and my launch window allowed me to insert into eve orbit for 60% less than hazardish.
    Then, there is the Eve->Eve gravity assist. This gravist assist allowed me to align my apoapsis with gilly so that the insertion into gilly orbit would be very cheap.
    Overall, I saved almost 1 km/s of delta v over hazard-ish flight plan. Considering that the mission is in the 5-6 km/s range, that is a massive improvement. AND that is taking into account the fuel I used to land the booster. Had I not decided to make this reusable, the improvement would be some 400 m/s larger.
    One more thing: Had hazardish used this flight plan, he would not have needed to stage the top tank."

    • @ultimatesteve9647
      @ultimatesteve9647 6 лет назад +14

      Nobody said anything about having to return, an Eve landing is probably possible. Launching from the highest mountain on Kerbin high altitude ion planes have enough specific impulse and thrust to do stuff, but nobody has gotten all the way to space (or orbit) yet. With a big enough computer at least getting to Eve is probably possible.
      If you allow stock props and catapults, definitely.

    One thing i think you should try: Maybe attatch the pod upside down to the tank, then rotate it so that the heatshield node is facing down? Will this decrease drag, or will a downwind 2.5m node be worse than an upwind 1.25m one?
