Honestly they would have followed any one who claimed they would become one with the universe upon assention into Heaven by a celestial being... including the promise of being whisked away by the Hale Bob comet (as with Heaven's Gate) or aliens. They say they didnt join Heaven's Gate because they would have had to leave us kids behind with family who would never would let them take us! (Thanks for saving us Grandma and Grandpa!)
