I have a 1997 Cherokee 4x4 so this was an EXACT and amazing tutorial. I never felt like I was waiting on info. I feel confidant, I can handle this job, it will just take 10x as long as it does you. I have done engines, power steering gear box, Dana 44 rear, and transfer cases, this is the next step for me. You are a true professional.
Holy smokes, I will never question again or even flinch at the cost of a automatic transmission. That was amazing and truly We were all watching a master at work, your confidence and depth of knowledge is priceless.
Behold, a master at his craft. Your absolute comfort while you tear down a transmission is impressive, as is your knowledge of the generations of transmissions in Toyota (and other) vehicles. You sir will always have work!
Hiram, thanks for these videos. You are very helpful and informative. It’s clear you are a master of your craft. Keep it up and much health and happiness to you and family
Hiram is amazing to watch.... I've been blessed to learn so much from him! I'm working on this trans now. With each one I do, it does seem to get easier. ...
I like the new intro. Keep going with that. That Jeep servo cover is huge. Excellent teardown. I don't know how you can keep all that stuff organized and know where every little piece goes back in. Blows my mind. Love watching your videos. You're a true professional.
And now ladies and gentlemen you see why it costs so much to have your transmission rebuilt. And he didn’t even show you what it takes to remove and install it... 👍 Great vid. ;)
I had an A4LD transmission rebuilt in my 1988 Ford Bronco 2. Cost $2400 to have it removed, rebuilt, and reinstalled. Shifts a lot better than it ever did before and they beefed up some of the internals to make it hold up far better than before.
Hiram, Wow, never seen so many roller thrust washers in use for one application. They are a stout low friction method of keeping clearances accurate. Just amazed how well they all looked given the amount of saturated heat they must endure. And then, the darned transmission is filled with plastic washers! It's almost like two different engineering teams designed this unit with very different philosophy's ! :-) Great video.
Dude, not the first time you've done this! You know your way around that thing and take no shit from those bolts. Very impressive. I hope I never have to do this....ever.
Another excellent video Hiram. Even though you say you had a problem with your voice I could hear you perfectly in this video, much better than some previous ones. The cam was nice and clear too. Thanks for sharing.
Your a great mechanic Hiram ,pleasure watching! I am a millwright mechanic and i have some transmission problems in my 1998 Jeep Cherokee classic, not downshifting properly.Your video is very helpful, thanks :)
Great video. I have the same transmission, 2000 Cherokee 4x4, slowly lost R over the past 5,000 miles- started off slight slipping and now fully slipping in R , all 4 forward gears work perfectly including 1st and 2 in manual low, put it in R and it might send 5% power to the wheels, but just slips, but the wheels will spin backwards if you jack it up off the ground, but you can stop it with your hands. Fluid like new and was serviced every 40,000 miles, high miles 267,000.... I will pull it apart and see what I find.... Thanks for the video.
This would be my scenario: "Humpty dumpty sat on a wall, humpty dumpty had a great fall, and all the kings horses and all the kings men (including me) could not put humpty dumpty together again!
Ok I’ve watched it five times beginning to end. I hope everything goes back the same way you took it apart. I have a 97 aw4 that I need to change the output shaft so I can put it in a 4x4. Wish me luck
Thank you for the very informative video. I have a query, however, about a friend's J95 Prado that runs the 30-43 LE AW4 AT gearbox from Aisin; the vehicle had overheated, and was towed on it's rear wheels for approximately 800 kilometers. However, after it was brought back and the overheating issue was fixed, the vehicle has chewed through two torque converters in 3000 odd kilometers, and we're unable to isolate why. Could you help us with a guess?
I have a y2k XJ and just acquired an AW4 outta an unknown year XJ. The trans is smoked, but I'ma tear it apart to get the better scrap price and hopefully learn something along the way.
Great it's apart now what? Wound up reverse engineering a T51 4LSlippy-E reverse spring compressor in order to get this one out. You got a re assembly of the same thing?
Hi There. Excellent video thank you very much by any chance do you have a video with the reverse process in this transmission? I chance my valve body and now I can go reverse and even in P go forward. If any Tip you can provide?
8:54, the feed pipes. If one is loose/coming out, can this lead to the vehicle only being able to drive using the gear shifter manually to shift 1-2..3...4. Won't drive if its just put in "D".. give it gas and it kinda crawls badly...
Hi Hiram,Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge to us beginners (and also making it easy to digest).I manage to disassemble an a341e out of a lexus, thanks to your video. Now that i got all the parts come out, i found out most of the gears (that are not part of the rebuild kit) and housing are rusty creating surface imperfection. My question is ... is this transmission still usable ? If so how can i safely remove the rust ?Can you make a short video how you cleanup internals of automatic transmission ? I'm sure it will help a lot of diyers like me. Again thank you Hiram ...
Hiram.
5:48 I dont think that goes to the transfer case. The t. case only has two places for wires . the speedometer on the tailhousing and the 4wd indicator switch. Correct me if Im wrong. The connector you showed is a 2 pin female. I can not find what plugs into it. I have completly forgotten. I can not see what plugs into this. very frustrating. any ideas?
Mystery solved, that connector doesn't get connected to anything. It just gets tucked behind the plate that is on the transmission that holds all the linkage for the transfer case. Who knows why this is even here?
hi from Costa rica... Great video.... I have a problem with my ZJ with AW4... very weak the reserve... Any ideas? thanks again fir the video. You are a very PRO.
Saludos hiran gracias por tus vídeos de verdad he aprendido mucho, quisiera que hagas un vídeo de a340 en español ya que no domino nada el ingles, gracias
Hi, does the intermediate band as well as intermediate clutch come on simultaneously during 1-2 shift. Why do some transmissions not have an intermediate sprag/clutch? Thanks for the amazing videos.
Hi. I am from Brazil. I work in the Jeep's plant here. I am a resident of transmissions in the plant. Here, two automatic transmissions are used 948TE (9 speed - ZF/chrysler) and AF25 ( 6 speed - Aisin). Do you have a videos about this transmissions? Thanks and congratulations for your job.

Hiram is the man.

You are a genius. You did in 33 minutes what would take me 33 days. I don't care if you have done it 100 times. I am impressed.
THANK YOU! Just rebuilt my AW4 step my step thanks to your vid!! You rock and now I'm moving again!!! :3
I may have to do the same soon. Any special tools you needed for reassembly? Did you follow torque specs from a hilton or similar manual?
ncsugray90 I used Grant ft lbs ;) snap ring plyers are a must.

How it go.
Was it the servo piston?
Thank you Hiram for another informative video.
I like the fancy new title graphics. Looks very professional. Good job Hiram.
This video fully confirms my sense of intimidation with transmissions.
The same transmission used on Mitsubishi Delica L400 called ASIN 8980 11 might be some slight differences but bone is the same.
I have rebuilt medium case cruisamatics. These are much more complex but with your video I should be able to disassemble and rebuild. Thank you!
This is what job security looks like.
These guys are full of shit
Says the stupid people in the comments
Haha
Such a great video, thank you. So detailed, no standard youtube BS.

Nice job. Really liking your vids. Very thorough

GTG brother, thanks for video!

I'd have to clear my whole garage before I could even consider diving into a project like that.
I will never look @ a transmission the same again lol
Awesome Job......is there a A340 or similar that does not have solenoids....Full hydraulic ? Cheers
Great vid! is the rebuild video around? love to see that
Great it's apart now what? Wound up reverse engineering a T51 4LSlippy-E reverse spring compressor in order to get this one out. You got a re assembly of the same thing?
The range sensor is also the neutral safety switch and the switch for the backup lights. They also cost $200 !!
1st time doing this ? lol - dude that was awesome !!!
