I worked in an independent VW & Porsche shop in beginning of the 70's and I have to say that you understand the 356, 912, early 911's when you say you want to just keep on driving. These cars were the last of the purely mechanical cars and others would go faster but with less satisfaction. I do wish you had taken a shift at redline just to hear the Porsche rasp that you got on the shift.
Donald's barely restrained giddiness while driving that beauty really makes me miss my '73 911E and that very same feeling I got every time I got behind her wheel.
I love your intimate story at the end; thanking your big brother for (I suspect) helping you become interested in cars because of his passion. Thanks Donald for sharing some deep insight about your early life.
Beautiful machine. True classic. With the classic automobile journalist. Sir Donald Osborne. Never driven a 911. But I've ridden in a newer model. Nice and cool.❤❤🔥👌😎
Thanks for taking us along for the ride. Leno often quips that Ferrari owners brag about how few miles their cars have while Porsche drivers brag about how many miles are on theirs.
Sweet, sweet sound and a snappy dresser behind the wheel - refinement. That interior is fantastic with its simple, clean, and tactile appearance. How I wish auto makers would turn back the clock a little, ditch the tablet on the dashboard, and make the experience more about the drive. Thanks for your efforts Mister Osborne.
Hi Donald . Is Arch a fond and loving memory like my brother Norbert ? Gone but never forgotten 💖 When you said SWB I immediately thought 912. In the mid 1980's l restored / rebuilt a very badly repaired one , this was when Porsche were the world leaders in keeping a record of any parts used to keep that car on the road. Porsche would not issue parts to any car without the fullest details . .And then l promptly restored an absolute wreck of a 911 T sportomatic and had the priviledge of using Glasurit 54 line for the first time . The best ever base coat / clear system full stop ! I also had the opportunity of giving a '74 Carrera absolute beans on a short but hilarious test drive ! What a hoot ! Thanks Donald . As Bing would sing ...thanks for the memory!
@@Zagato67 My apologies Donald . I absolutely adored my big brother he was 6 years my senior . And back in the '60 's/ 70's we had so much fun . Norbert bought a new TR6 and l had , at 19 , a Triumph 2.5 pi saloon . We literally used to chase each other through the streets and roads of Torquay at outragious speeds that today would have probably put us both behind bars !!! Norbert , in spite of being well liked by all who met him sadly took his own life in 2001. Still miss him. Once again , my apologies Donald .
Thank You Sir! I enjoyed my 77 911S Sunroof Coupe. 22 mpg all the way up to 85. Stable as a rock! Wish I had it back, along with my 32 Plymouth PB Rumble Seat Coupe during my college days...
@@AudrainMuseumNetwork Thanks for the invite. I’m such a fan of old, light-weight, air-cooled Porsches. I really like how you expressed that the 911 “feels as if it was carved from a solid block”. That’s almost exactly what I said when I got to ride in a wonderful ‘68 911 a few years ago! It’s also uncanny how one feels the nuances of the road surface yet the ride is so smooth. Thanks again for reminding me!
I remember well the first time my Dad pointed out a 911 to me in 1979 and looking at the profile the Fuchs it looked remarkable to 5 year old me. I had come home from hospital from birth in Dads 356 and had seen Ferraris and exposed to many special cars over my life but can see that 911 in my mind to this day. Lovely presentation beautifully articulated experience.
Hit the nail on the head with the familiar shapes being appealing to youngsters. 911’s and Jeeps were my first and enduring favorites since childhood. Thanks for sharing your enthusiasm and knowledge, sir.
Really enjoyed this, and the story at the end was touching. Early 911s (and 912s) are some of the greatest driver's cars ever made. It's interesting you mention the linearity. I remember in a period magazine test of the early 911 the driver noting that the car maintained the same handling attitude from normal driving all the way to 10/10s at the limit, which made it more confidence inspiring to drive quickly than the FR cars in the test, which tend to handle very differently at the limit than they do at 8 or 9/10ths.
Great video! Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I bought an Irish Green '67 911 (non S) when I was in college in Southern New England. Being an New England car it had rusty floors that the previous owner had fiberglassed over and then undercoated. Of course, all I saw was 911 and didn't really pay attention to that when I bought it. I just remember it was sublime to drive around MA and RI. As you say, it cemented by deep love for Porsche and the 911. I currently have a g body (1980 SC) that I like driving around, but I still miss that '67 45 years later.
Glad you are enjoying! We are always looking to improve the quality of our content. It's nice to know our recent decisions and changes are being well received!
your description of a 911 was spot on! Our 2022 carrara 4S feels like my old 911. they kept that visceral feeling a little bit, even in the new ones. Great vid!
Donald....many many thanks for such a BRILLIANT review of the original Porsche 911S. I just LOVE these cars and your driving review was clear, factual and to the point ! In fact Donald, I saw this model at the Porsche factory in 1967 with my father when the 911S was just released. I still have all of the factory brochures that represented this car including the large brochure which was presented in an envelope including the color card and the price list. These brochures are as close as I will ever get to an original 911S Porsche ! many many thanks, gerhard a. hendricks (Australia)
Great video, thank you. I’d love one, to test on track and drive sedately on road. I have a 280SL from January ‘68 ( really early one). Different car, but wonderful. I’ll have a look see and see what I can afford. The 280 is a keeper. I can see anyone with your car would never part with it.
The familiarity is easy to explain. The 911 was inspired by the 356, which itself was inspired by the VW Beetle so the friendliness comes ultimately from everyone’s Love of the Beetle. Hence we love its Grandchild, the 911. All from Ferdinand’s family.
Oh, don't worry, she was washed and detailed very shortly after the drive! But we don't like to let a little rain get in the way of a spirited drive. All of our Cars & Coffee events are rain or shine, as well as our Concours & Motor Week, and most recently, our Veteran Car Tour! Check it out here: ruclips.net/video/T6_9rXanSpI/видео.html There is something so cool about driving 100 year old, wooden cars in the rain!
I have made many mistakes in my life. One of them was trading a '67 Porsche 911S for a wife, a house in the suburbs (as opposed to a beach house I'd been living in) and two dogs. My advice: never compromise YOUR values for someone else's. Be true to yourself.
Donald is a true classic. Just like the 911 ! 😎

Well put Donald. There is something truly magical about a early 911.

As the proud owner of a 993 I tremendously enjoyed your video Donald. The pronounciation of 'Fuchs' remains a challenge for most Americans 😊
Donald Osborne is incredibly knowledgable, and I thank Jay Leno for introducing me and many others to Donald through his show.
I don't expect I'll have an opportunity to drive this beautiful car. I appreciate the description! Great job!
Thank you for the kind words!

Yeah buddy! This is it!
Beautiful color! Excellent presentation, Donald!
This is good! Hearing about your dad living near the dealership and all. I can understand the want for this model car or any Porsche. So cool. Thanks.
Wow! Now don't tell anyone🤣! This car is as old as I am and has just slightly less horsepower than my Alfa. I love it.👍🏽
Not “old”… “classic.”😉
Donald nice video on this early 911!!! Anche il suo abbigliamento è perfetto x questa macchina! Complimenti!
Grazie Mille!
Great video as always, Donald! That is a true Porsche 911 - not the bloated fat Elvis version being produced currently.
I had one of these 67S puppies for many years. They don’t really sing under 5000rpm but the scream at 7000 is special. Too bad it was raining
