I think someone else has already answered the question about why we don't refer to ourselves as Mormons. But very simply, our Prophet challenged the worldwide membership a few years back to refer to the full name of the church in our dialogue and interactions with others. Whilst we believe in both the Book of Mormon and the Bible, people really need to know that ultimately we believe in and follow our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ 🙂

Thank you for this video. Such a hand of fellowship is appreciated among members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It shows so much Christ-like love, humility, and compassion to reach out like that.
Instead of Mormons or even LDS, we go by members of The Church of Jesus Christ because many people do not think that we believe in Jesus Christ, even though that is the name of our church. We are Christians and believe that Jesus Christ is our Savior and Redeemer.
I have friends of all faiths and love learning of their beliefs in a supportive and friendly way. I love that y’all do the same. It is how God would want us to treat each other!

This video has a very positive vibe to it, which being LDS myself i greatly appreciate. You asked about our views on Christ so as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints i would love to share my own viewpoint.
Jesus Christ is the Son of God and came into the world to redeem mankind, based on faith in Christ, true repentance and baptism along with being born again of changing our natures from carnal and devilish to one of being filled with the Spirit of God. Mankind must repent. Jesus Christ is the only name by which we can be saved! Christ was known in the Old Testament as Jehovah, and he led the children of Israel as recorded in the Bible. Christ created this earth and the universe as we know it. Jesus Christ was born of Mary, walked among men and taught His gospel. He was crucified and was ressurected from the dead and he sits on the right hand of God!

So many people think that we aren't Christians because of our nicknames (The full name being The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints). Mormon is the name of an ancient prophet who compiled and abridged a book of spiritual and historical records which became known as The Book of Mormon after it was translated by a modern prophet Joseph Smith. The subtitle on The Book of Mormon is literally "Another Testament of Jesus Christ" so when people call us Mormons or LDS I find it a little sad because one of the foremost principals of our gospel is being Disciples of Jesus Christ (plus our prophet has asked us to not remove the name of our Savior when we speak of the church and ourselves).
Thank you for just asking questions and being open to learning more, I just stumbled upon this video but it was great! Thank you!

    Hi Alex and Ashley,
As a born and raised member of the Mormon/LDS church all my life in the OKC area, I appreciate your great love for others and for business/prosperity. I take interest in business aspects with an emphasis on faith and purpose.
I am an open book and have heard most every argument or question about my faith. So nothing offends me when asked in good nature to simply understand more of my relationship with God.
I’ll share this: growing up in OK I referred to many of my friends as “Indians”. At one point my HS coach asked us to not say “Indian” but instead “Native American” when around his wife. At first I thought it was odd and thought she’s just being too anal. I can relate to her now as our President Russell M. Nelson asked media and others to please reference us/the church other than Mormon.
The label “Indian” (India) really has nothing to do with Native Americans- a mistaken identity. It’s not quite the same but the word Mormon doesn’t truly represent who we actually are. I mean it was a guy’s name back in ancient days. It’s not an offense to refer to Mormon but yes Latter-Day Saints (LDS) or “members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints even reminds myself of who I represent.
I’d love to support you both in the cause for bridging our gaps for understanding and find commonalities to further Christian values in our communities. I’m not too far from north Texas and would be happy to learn from you as well. No egg shells around me. I can even make fun of my own thoughts beliefs but for me I know them to be true and it’s a joy to share as well as learn more from others.
    Thank you, Jason

This sort of humility is a rare occurance from personal experience. Thank you for living this Christ-like attribute. I know it's been 6 days at this point, and others have explained, but yes, "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints" is the full and proper name. What you might not know is, with a Modern-day Prophet and Apostles, the Church is a very living thing. So, despite being able to find many wonderful talks and things embracing the nickname "Mormon", the Lord has found it expedient (fit for a purpose), that we embrace and properly utilize the Full-and-Proper name for the Church. From personal experiences, I've found that as I follow the Lord's guidance through a Modern-day Prophet, I receive blessings.

This made me happy to see. It's far too common where mainstream Christians will make a video about Latter-Day Saints, and then when Latter-Day Saints say, "no actually, that's not what we think." they just double down and tell us that actually yes we do believe whatever straw man they heard. So thank you for being so respectful and acting in good faith, you're setting a good example for Christ-like behavior, and it's refreshing. It's honestly to be expected that you would have some misconceptions, just because there's so much stuff in the zeitgeist that are half truths, and what's commendable is that you actually believe us when you're told that you have some misconceptions, rather than just doubling down, which is what many people do.

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the most accurate term. Because it's a mouthful, people revert LDS short for Latter day Saint (even though technically thats still not perfect though it is a step closer in our minds) The reasoning behind this preference away from Mormon is because our prophet Russell M. Nelson instructed us about 5 years ago to remember the name of our Church having Jesus Christ in it. "Mormon" was always a 3rd party term that was used by those who only knew us by the special Book we had, The Book of Mormon and it inadvertently took our name away from the name of Jesus Christ over time. We are trying to repent from that as well. Appreciate your apology, though to be honest I don't know what it was for.

Caught covid and had to stay home from church today. Your video came up as I was looking for some church content to watch.
So refreshing to actually receive a sincere and heartfelt apology instead of the usual slander and mockery that I'm used to seeing. Wow! First of all, thank you so much for your humility and sincerity. I think this is a mark of true discipleship to our Savior Jesus Christ! As an Latter-Day Saint myself, it always warms my heart to meet other sincere brothers and sisters in Christ.
The official name of the Church is given by Jesus Christ Himself through His prophet Joseph Smith by revelation. Our Lord revealed to Joseph Smith to name His church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It's funny that you had called our church, the Church of Latter-day Saints. I believe Historically that was one of the many names that it went by before this particular revelation. But once His Church was fully established and restored, the Lord Himself through put an end to all confusion and gave this name to His Church.
Because it is His church, the Lord counseled us that it must bear His name. And why ...of Latter-Day Saints ? Because we are taught that this is the last dispensation and we are living in the latter days. We are no longer as the Saints of the ancient biblical times. And therefore we are distinguished as Latter-Day Saints. And so we choose to call ourselves "LDS", or "Latter-Day Saints" sometimes because calling ourselves "members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints" every time we need to refer to ourselves might not be efficient in every case.
Since one of the distinguishing features of the Church is the Book of Mormon, the name Mormon was applied to the members of the Church. The nickname "Mormon" was actually placed on us by those who reviled against us historically, and was almost always used in a derogatory spirit. It was never the name of the Lord's Church. "Mormon" is actually the name of the ancient prophet and historian who put together the Book of Mormon with all the different sacred records that were collected and preserved in the ancient Americas.
However, over time, even members started accepting being referred to as the Mormons. It has become part of our culture, but was never our doctrine. However, in recent years, the Lord stepped in and through our beloved prophet, President Russell M. Nelson, we were admonished and reminded in no unclear terms of what He had revealed His Church's name is to be and what His people are to be referred to. And therefore, we have this recent emphasis on referring to ourselves as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, or, Latter-Day Saints or LDS... depending on context and purpose of use.
Hope this helps you to understand this emphasis, what might some people feel to be an idiosyncrasy, of ours.
Like you, we love our Savior Jesus Christ. He is our Brother, our Advocate to the Father, our Redeemer, our only way back to our Heavenly home. We see ourselves as His disciples, and we strive to follow Him and become more like Him. We also believe in repentance, just like you. And it is only through His infinite atonement that repentance is made possible for us. We are counseled to repent every day so that we can recalibrate our hearts and minds to Him every day. This is what Jesus Christ means to us.
Once again, I rejoice in finding you, my brother and sister in Christ, through finding this video. I admire your zeal and your love for our Savior Jesus Christ and for sincerely practicing what He has thought. Just by producing this video, shows that you are so in tune with the Holy Spirit! Keep following the Spirit as you keep doing what you're doing in building the Lord's Kingdom. You are an example to me. And I will strive to continue my labor in my corner of the Lord's vineyard, encouraged and strengthened in the knowledge that we are friends.

    • @janeenburke
      @janeenburke День назад +1

Very well said!! I love all of this explanation, perfect! If I may just clarify one this as I know some Christians of other denominations have issue with us referring to Christ as our brother and I do understand why. Though it’s not false to refer to Him as our brother because He is the firstborn of the Father and therefore our most eldest brother. We do also believe He is our Father. He is called the Father because when we are baptized and born again, taking His name upon us…we become spiritually begotten sons and daughters of Christ. He becomes our spiritually begotten Father. Who Jesus refers to as His Father is the Father of all of our spirits, our Heavenly Father. Christ is the spiritually begotten Father to all those who covenant with Him in baptism. Why Jesus is referred to as our Eternal Father sometimes in scripture and why sometimes He refers to us as His children. I prefer calling Him my Father over Brother personally for this reason, but I do love thinking about Him being our eldest brother in heaven when we all lived together as spirits before the world was made. 😊

Most of us don't mind "mormon" as a term, member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is the most accurate. That has always been the case, but we've been more insistent on using the proper name. I think this is because we at least, believe we follow Jesus, and we believe His church should be called in His name. It's a bit of a mouthful, though.
You seem like great people. Most of us don't mind push back on our religion or beliefs either. I'm grateful when other people are concerned for my soul, truly.

"There are some things we can take away from everybody." That's our (Latter-day Saint) 13th article of faith. If we can set aside our differences (not abandon them, just set them aside) and focus on 1) commonality and 2) what good perspective do you have that I can come to appreciate and perhaps add to my perspective, then we can have the same spirit Christ has when He goes and hangs out with the sinners and hanging out with some of the Pharisees who obviously have some misunderstandings. The folks He gives a hard time are those who use their religion to criticize others rather than lift them up.
    May God bless you both.

Thank you for your kind thoughts. “Mormon” is a nick name given to us because we have the Book of Mormon, which is another testament of Jesus Christ. Mormon was a prophet in the Book of Mormon who abridged the ancient writings of the prophets in the Americas. However even in the Book of Mormon it says that the church shall be called The Church of Christ. I believe that the term, “ of Latter-day Saints” was added to distinguish it from the ancient church. The name was given by revelation to the prophet Joseph Smith in 1838. I hope this helps explain why we have this name. Thanks again for listening.😇

Love the reply’s/ comments. The original source of calling the LDS Mormons was during the early church. It was a derogatory term kinda like calling the blacks some of the things they have been called in derogatory terms. I’m sure you won’t find one member who is offended or bothered by being referred to as a Mormon, we called ourselves that for familiarity reasons when others have asked what church we go to for as long as I can remember. It is recently that the error of how we and others thoughtlessly identify us or ourselves has been brought to light. We are The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Our religion is the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We belong to the Church of Jesus Christ.

It is The Church of Jesus Christ of Later-Day Saints. That has been the name of the church since April of 1838. The name was given by Christ Himself to the church. The reason the true name is being re-emphasized today is because other names leave out the name of The Lord and that is not pleasing to Him. Mormon was a great man, but it is not his church. The Latter-Day Saints is just another name for the members, but it is not our church.

You guys are awesome. It takes a lot of courage and humility to do what you just did in this video.
I just wanted to see if I could tackle Ashley's question as to why we want to be called Latter-day Saints instead of Mormons. Before I do that, let me first explain why we don't really like to be called Latter-day Saints or members of the Church of Latter-day Saints either. While I, for one, do appreciate your efforts to use our churches actual name, (because as Alex said at the begining of the video, the shift is difficult when we have been known as Mormons to all of Christendom for decades). So thank you for your efforts. But to clarify it just a little more for you, we are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. To go by LDS, or Latter-day Saints, or members of the Church of Latter-day Saints removes the name of our Savior from His Church. We believe the church to be His Church established on a foundation of prophets and apostles with Jesus Christ as the chief cornerstone. To remove His name from His Church, we feel, is an unacceptable omission. This is also why we prefer the use of the full name of the church over "Mormons" as well.
I hope that helps to clarify why we have made a collective effort to correct that unfortunate oversight. I hope that also gives you an idea of how we think of Jesus and what place He holds in our doctrine. He is at the forefront and heart of everything we teach and believe. Thanks for what you are doing. We wish you the best.

Thanks! Yeah the term “Mormon” was a nickname given by others and accepted by early members. It’s based on the name of an ancient prophet named Mormon who abridged the records that comprise the Book of Mormon. You can see why the name stuck. 😊
While it’s not offensive at all, it’s a name that we recognize is not representative of who we worship, that being Christ.
So the name of the church is, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. That name clarifies whose church it is (Christs) who we worship and who we are as Latter Day (last days) Saints (anyone who follows Christ).
I’m a lifelong member and live in New Jersey. I’d be happy to join your podcast, though it’d have to be a zoom call.

Hi! The reason we prefer to be called Latter-Day Saints, is because we don't want people to think that we worship Mormon. We worship our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. That is why the name of the church is the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, so when talking about the Church, we like to at least say the church of Jesus Christ, that way we don't leave out his name. When referring to the members we are happy to be called latter-day saints. Saints because that was a word used in Psalms and the New testament to refer to believers of Christ. Latter-day, because we believe we are in the last days. Hope that helps.

When I used to be an Evangelical I didn't like being called a Bible Thumper. The Title of Christian was not taken away from me for becoming a Member of This Church rather it was The Holy Ghost that prompted me to join The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints yet in the past people have said basicly the same thing I just did, and were accused of being deceived by Satan for their Trouble...Oh Well....I cant change my Family, but I hope you guys are sincere, and not just trying to promote your Channel by getting a Bunch of Subs from Latterday Saint Viewers.

Thank you. Russell M. Nelson requested members use the full name of the organization. There are some great quotes centered on the Savior in his request. At the time he asked, I was an employee of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship. My duties included research and editing for The Journal of Book of Mormon Studies, a peer reviewed publication.
It wasn't an easy request. In particular, Mormon Studies Review, an annual academic journal covering "Mormon studies" (published by the University of Illinois Press) was faced with a name change.
Yeah, it can be hard to call "Mormons" "Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints", but imagine trying to publish a scholarly book with that title - "Studies of the ... of the ... of ... yeesh".
We made changes and worked as writers, scholars, and editors to follow the call to "more fully center our works on the Lord". That is the real heart of the name change. We love Jesus. We take His name upon us, and strive to honor His grace. Even if it has a higher character count and causes some extra hours before hitting the press.

Deleting Jesus Christ from the name of our church is actually pretty offensive, as I’m sure you would feel if someone did that about your church or beliefs.

I wish more people of faith would humble themselves as you have. I believe that no matter what denomination you believe in, Jesus saves all who come into him. I don’t think there is only one right way to worship our savior. As long as we understand that we are all fallen and that through Jesus and his atonement can we be saved. The world is growing more wicked with each passing day and the return of the king is fast approaching. No matter what denomination you are, I am positive that we will all need to rely on each other in the coming days. Satan doesn’t care if you believe in the right Jesus. He wants to divide us regardless. I pray that all of us who follow the savior Jesus Christ, will lock arms and be a shield from the wicked world we live in. God bless and remember to live thy neighbor!

A true Christian who obeys and loves our only Savior Jesus Christ is wiling to repent. In fact, repenting is a special level of relationship and brings joy to the heart. Thank you for being an example. Mormon was an ancient Prophet. He was the man who complied the Book of Morman from the original plates they were engraved on. Hense the title. In the early days, I think the named Mormons stuck because other Christians thought we woeshipped Mormon. It has been used in a mocking spirit against us. That isn't the reason we don't like it though. We 100% believe we are a church of Jesus Christ, the restored Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and we collectively agreed to honor our Lord and give Him the Glory that is do Him. Morman was a great man to us but yet a man and cannot save even himself. The only name by which a man can be saved is Jesus Christ. A lot of our brother and sisters in Christ think that we are not Christian. We would like to show that we are. Our in church and the entire focus of the BOM is on Christ. Our generation wants to be less isolated and more out in the open. We feel the Lord is hastening His Work on the earth and we are in a different season of the latter days. If we claim Christ as a people then two "tribes" who both claim Christ, the only begotton Son of God the Father who loves both of us so much that He paid the price of our sins to atone for us. Surely, their is a unity in the same Christ and the same Spirit which raised Christ from the dead and now dwells in us. Our Prophet and President of the Church instructed us to do the work of Unity and to be peacemakers. We don't hate God's other children, even those who choose to worship a different god. It was thr Most High God who created us all and who gave us all the gift of angency - the ability to make our own choices. He even inspired and "brought forth this new nation" so He could have a people who were free to choose and worship Him without tryanny of other men from which His Church could go unto all the earth and fulfill Christ's command to share His Gospel. Right? For us His Gospel is to believe and recieve Jesus Christ, to repent of our sins, to be Baptised by immersion in water for the remission of our sins, to recieve The Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands(in prayer) and endure to the end. We believe God has restored the Abrahamic Covenant to His Saints of today. We make covenants with Father through Christ and help each other learn to keep them a little better today than yesterday. We believe that if we have true intent, God will give His witness to us and to anyone that reads the BOM without turning a hardened heart to it. We know that it is only the true witness of the Holy Spirit of God to our individual heart that creates the basis of our faith in Him. We each must have our own testimony of the truth of as revealed by the father of the Son and of his restored Church. As John prophesied to us in revelation. "By the blood of the lamb and the word of their testimony they overcame and they loved not their life unto death. We are dedicated to preparing as many of God's children for the return of The Lord and King Jesus Christ as will. Having been in many "Christian" fellowships and some nonChristian religions in my life, I thing that this one committment to prepare ourselves and others is the single greatest influencer of my Christian life. I know that I was born for this time and I have found the church that is most capable of helping me prepare. Not just to praise at his return but to deeply understand Father's Plan for our Eternal salvation and progresssion. The things that I take seriously in my unperfect attempt to be a righteous daughter of God and desiple of Christ are so much clearer and dearer to me now.
