- TWO ROBERT JOHNSON GUITARS ON ONE STAGE!!
It’s not often you have two 1920s Gibson L-1 guitars in the same place.
These guitars are associated with the blues great #robertjohnson
See the famous picture of him from 1936 with his pinstripe suit holding a Gibson L-1.
Here’s the encore from our set at @ffwrn.fishguard as part of @aberjazz festival in Fishguard, Wales.
We got @jonathannicholasmusic and Ted up (who had played earlier) to do the encore with us and of course we did an RJ song on our RJ guitars!
They’re a 1929 in Sunburst and a 1926 in Natural finishes.
‘They’re Red Hot’ is the song and is all about buying Mexican Tamales.

Great job. Drumming was perfect
Oh yeahhh!
Loved it!!! That tune is always such great fun!!!!
Thanks!! 🎼🎯🎼
It’s a full acoustic version! Well done all…
It was easier than resetting mics for one encore number! Always nice to do things ‘properly’ and in the way those original instruments were designed to do!!
I’ve got an original 1928 Gibson L-1. From my research, the batch number on my guitar places it at the end of 1928. Mine also doesn’t have binding. Just wondering where you got the information that they only made L-1s without binding for 7 months?
I was told this by a Gibson collector quite a few years ago.
What you say is very interesting.
More research needed as you’re pointing at the binding being across a different time frame than I was informed about.
@ Thanks for the prompt reply! I’ve seen other 1928s (Keith Richards’ for example) that also don’t have neck binding. Perhaps the 7 month period began in 1928 and crossed over into 1929?
