Hello! I really hope you see this. I'm 17 and have a huge passion for animals even since I was little. I just set up a 20 gallon saltwater tank and you are one of the absolute main youtubers I have been watching to learn from. You are an amazing teacher even if it's sometimes just you making mistakes especially you setting up the 10 gallon nano tank. Thank you so so much for sharing your experiences and inspiring and motivating me to start my own saltwater tank. It's now one of my prized possessions and I'm very proud of it.
Hey Anna thank you for taking the time out of your day to watch my videos and leave such a nice comment! I'm glad there are folks like you out there that care so much for animals; often times I feel that I could do much better in terms of providing a good environment for mine. Maybe one day I would be learning from you in a future videos! =)
Inappropriate Reefer I know exactly what you mean! I feel like I could do better all the time but it's better then somethings other people do. I think as long as you're doing proper care and the animal is happy, they must be content :)
Im glad everything is going well, ive watched basically all your videos (becoming addicted) i received an Innovative Marine Fusion 40 today, sadly the tank had 2 severe cracks in upon arrival, watching your videos has managed to cheer me up, so thanks for the help and hopefully should have a replacement tank soon. keep up the good work
Hey I'm sorry to hear about your IM situation, they're a great company and I am sure they will make things right! Since you're waiting for the tank replacement, may be a good time to check out my recent MACNA 2018 video, there is a segment in there where IM demoed a few of their new equipments that work well in their tanks.. some of them are pretty clever!
Trace elements are your friend for gold torch's. Strontium being more of the primary trace element for them. Also found gold torch like to be lower in the tank, either sand bed or a few inches on the rock work. Looks good non the less, keep on reefing 👍
I’m about to move off to college and I was gonna make a 75g discus tank but after watching your vids you are making me really second guess it to make a reef tank
Very Amazing video man. This definitely helped alot. I'm just now going to go buy the live sand, the salt water, and the rocks today after work for my new 10 gallon Nano build
Hey man! I really like most of your videos, but I have to say as someone who is a very beginner to keeping a reef tank a lot of this really goes over my head. I love this budget tank series because I can relate to it and am actually in the process of building a very similar one. I really would have loved if you talked more about the tank, how the budget results are different from regular results, how you got around issues, etc. because most of the information about specific corals is completely beyond me. Not to seem like a hater I just really believe your channel would grow much faster if someone like me could follow along and understand what you are talking about.
Just scrolling through comments and I came across this. I was in much of the same place you are prior to getting my 90 gallon mixed reef all stable and running. What I would suggest is that you just completely immerse yourself into the fish tank forums, there's endless forums with a multitude of different topics from beginners to serious issues that require expert opinions. By just sitting there reading what other people said to each other (of course you have the heavily opinionated ones on their way being correct) you learn so much about the hobby. Also simply just spending time talking to people at your LFS.
Live this series since I am looking forward to a 15g budget saltwater tank. It'll be built into a terrarium for hermit crabs, with 15g fresh and 15g saltwater. Freshwater is obviously kinda easy especially since I can cut some plants from my 75g. But I've never touched saltwater and I am really interested in keeping corals, so I'll see how things go!
It is interesting to see this build, and how you guys on the other side of the big pond do things. In my country, the reefkeepers would crucify me if i brought this up.
For nano fish, you might check out plectranthias inermis (Pygmy hawkfish). Perching fish, tons of personality, and stays small. I’ve had a few over the years, awesome little fish. 😁 This tank is a little gem! Looks lovely. 👍🏻👍🏻
Try feeding your torches Fauna Marin Lps pellets (medium size). 1 pellet directly on the mouth before lights come on after a few drops of Polyp lab booster in the column. All my torches love this stuff, especially if they are a decent size and have not recently been fragged. Also, I'm about to start feeding them Benereef by Benepets. Will let you know how it goes.
Careful with those palys. Use plenty of activated carbon to absorb the palytoxins if you disturb or injure them. That tank is small enough that their toxins can affect other corals and even kill fish.
I own a sexy shrimp too great personality for a tank. I bought a sick hammer coral from my lfs for $15 and it's looking really happy so far lots of light and flow and hopefully it grows big and the sexy shrimp finds it and makes it his home.
@@InappropriateReefer I keep mine fed so they don't snack on zoas. I think it might be a last resort and my zoas are on an island rock on the other side of my tank where the shrimp doesn't hang out too often. Keep zoas monitored with them because you never know in the end if they will try and eat them but mine has not tried it yet.
Also I feed him mysis shrimp along with the rest of the tank so regular feeding keeps them happy. I know you go on trips alot so I recommend an automatic feeder because when they aren't fed for a few days they can find zoas as a snack so I'd get someone if you don't already have someone to come and feed your tanks while you are gone and leave them a note to specially feed sexy shrimp as they might eat the zoas
Hey fellow Reefer.. i was looking at different Nano reef setups and came across your RUclips channel. I must say that 10gal Nano is amazing. I’m definitely liking what you’re doing with that setup. So where in Maryland are you from? I live in Maryland as well. You may even bump into me at the House of Tropics, if that’s a place where you get livestock..
I love this build I have just run across this channel but this build is simply amazing. I am a freshwater keeper have been wanting to dip my toes in saltwater but I’m terrified I will screw something up this makes it seem totally doable without a sump kinda makes me wanna give it a try
Love this build series. I am planning a 5gallon build myself. Want to do a few simple corals. Cuc and one main fish in it. Any suggestions for coral or a fish? Have some idea but wonder what you would choose! Keep up the great work man. Loving it!!!
Awesome video! New subscriber here. I just started my first saltwater tank. It's a 30g. It's cycling right now. It's only been a week buy I'm gonna wait about a month before I start adding anything. Thanks for all the information!
Hey I know I’m about 3 years late, but I jus wanna say that I recreated your build because it’s so amazing! Thank you for inspiring me. I do have a question about your light. I’m not entirely sure if you are using a lens for the blues, but what setting to did you use for the light? I’ve tried a couple settings but I can’t seem to get the lighting in my tank to look like yours. Well anyway, thank you again!
I used to live in Maryland (Towson) now moved to Florida but I used to love going up to ThatFishPlace. Is your algae problem due to flow not getting to that part of the rock? Love seeing this tank come to life.
My 15g tank has the same filtration and i have a tiny power head and I know i have at least decent flow and I still have diatoms. Somehow silica is getting into the tank.
I've been watching your channel for a while now and I really want to start a budget salt water tank, but I was afraid my winter,s and summer,s would be either too cold or too hot to maintain the proper temps etc.because I live in Baltimore MD. Hey man, I'm 40 mins away from Baltimore, I think you will be fine, just need heater, no need for chiller! What's your plan with this reef tank so far?
My first try was at the one month mark, things did not go well, it detached while I was on vacation and got grind up by the powerhead. Hindsight the tank was too young... the tank may still be too young but this one was introduced at around 2.5 months and has been solid. I believe in general people recommend around the 6 months mark.

Molly Miller Blenny eats aiptasia. I guess it's the "hot' fish that everyone is buying recently to eat the aiptasia in their tanks. Maybe check it out?
@@InappropriateReefer Yeah in your previous vid. Forgot all about that. Will be nice to see a few more fish in there. Looking forward to it and the 150 build.
Great content bro, keep doing what your doing, I'm starting a 55 reef tank soon and I'm going to get some "All for reef " for the corals. Water parameters. Do you test?
Love all ur videos, you inspired me to build a 10 gallon! I have this tank but derimmed it. I also have the hipagaro, and a current marine. I couldnt decide so bought both, got the current for 40 bucks! Probably keep that but hate the lay across type as far a looks go! I just bought the aqua clear 50 but still using 30, i wanted to put more media plus most people seem to oversize. I also went and bought a korelia nano wave pump and now I see lots dont use waves on a ten gallon. Shame I am past my time for refund, so maybe I will save for my upgrade or do you think a aqua clear 50 would need more flow? I do have it mounted on side like you so no current on other side. i plan on torches so maybe just place them on side by filter. What is ur advice on that. Also, I have heard many people in nano forum especially, with the move slowly, be patient attitude about corals and a new tank. You moved them rapidly They were telling me I would regret it if I did that, that I would experience an ugly stage! I waited 5 weeks to cycle and I am going nuts. I have seen many including yourself do it and there is a frag fest in town this weekend...lol Doo you have to dose all lps or just if you want more growth? I use good reef salt and I have saw people that did not dose lps, so I am confused!
I am going to be taking down a 20 long reef and was going to set up a standard 10 in its place. I was thinking about using the aquaclear70 from off the 20 and using it on the 10 but thought it would be to strong. Especially, if hung onto the back and blowing straight forward. How has the flow been from on the side blowing across? Is it to much at all? Do you think the mod you did slowed the output all all?
Decent flow going on and adding stuff in the back definitely reduced the flow a bit. It’s working well with the 10 and I am considering adding a tiny powerhead to give more chaotic flow 👍
@@InappropriateReefer i really like the hydor pico evo-mag for these smaller tanks. As it can be adujusted to what ever flow you need and still not be to strong. :)
So i did this budget tank for my office at work. i have a 65 gal at home. really struggling all together. doing everything im supposed to water changes weekly, testing parameters, nothing bad in the tank. not over feeding. same light that you have, RO/DI water, great salt. ...just not going well....how did you quickly get corals and everything in and look so healthy? does it help to place a mature frog spawn or hammer into a newer tank?
Hi, I'm new to reef keeping and set up my pico tank with the same aquaknight as yours and I'm just curious to how many + and - clicks you keep yours on to keep the frogspawn and hammers and how many hours throughout the day do you keep it on? Thanks!
Are there sea anemone that don’t like light they turn around away from the light there treen and less than a centimeter in size if that helps great video awesome tank!!
So, I have favia, anemones, trachy, torches, elegance, and fish in a tank that ranges from 72 to 74 from day to night and everything grows and opens. What is the deal? In summer it stays 78-80. I live in Arizona and don’t run a heater.
Maybe you could move a filefish over to eat up that aiptasia. I thought that the sexy shrimp couldn't survive off of anything other than starfish, are yours fine regardless?
Hmm so far the Radial Fishfish in the 45g haven't really picked off any larger Aiptasia that I have seen, I'll probably just manually remove it! I think you may be thinking of the Harlequin Shrimp that eats starfish?

Lol, extra protein for the tankmates! This is a bit of first world problem
I wish mine would do that!
Get a toadstool leather for the corner by the filter intake, and one clown would be super cool! Maybe it would host the anemone.

So, I have favia, anemones, trachy, torches, elegance, and fish in a tank that ranges from 72 to 74 from day to night and everything grows and opens. What is the deal? In summer it stays 78-80. I live in Arizona and don’t run a heater.
where do u get your ato water container?
Maybe you could move a filefish over to eat up that aiptasia. I thought that the sexy shrimp couldn't survive off of anything other than starfish, are yours fine regardless?
Hmm so far the Radial Fishfish in the 45g haven't really picked off any larger Aiptasia that I have seen, I'll probably just manually remove it! I think you may be thinking of the Harlequin Shrimp that eats starfish?
Just get a peppermint shrimp...
