Did MLB allow Angel Hernandez to stick around for too long? | Dan Patrick Show | NBC Sports
/ nbcsports
This is the best call Angel ever made.
If you Biden will retire too, then I will pronounce you mr President and Angel man and wife. Mr and Mrs Angel and Josephine Hernandez
If you feel the need to say about your retirement that you weren't forced out, either you were or you really should have been.
😂🤣💯
He was definitely bought out lol
Stuck around too long?? MLB should have fired him years ago. Yes, it's like he was purposely bad and the league office seemed to have wanted it. It has been absolutely shameful.
Thank the union.
He never worked for mlb. He worked for the umpires union. Mlb has zero authority over it.
@@carpetbuddy The umps are members of the union but they are employed by and paid by MLB. The union might have protected his job somewhat but he could have been fired. Hernandez made around $400,000 a year for being a complete joke.
CB Bucknor is now #1 with Angel gone
But he hasn't made as much of bad calls that Angel has, hasn't he?
@@reuellucas7187 He's bad, give him a watch and judge for yourself.
@@america1st721 okay I'll let you know lol 😆
Was looking for this
Don’t forget about Vic Carapazza!
Don't even have to stop to think of the second worst umpire. It's CB Bucknor and it's not even close.
Yeah, but Angel made CB look like Harry Wendelstedt.
Laz diaz is really bad too
He really is horrible, too.
Laz Diaz is up there as well
Stick around too long? He should have never been there. Not qualified to call high school games. He had 3 calls overturned in a playoff game!
Here’s the concerning thing in retrospect: those three pitches waaaay outside the zone in the Houston game this spring… was that him telling MLB “I’m going to be so bad you’re going to have to buy me out to stop the embarrassment”?
Every umpire misses calls, but Angel Hernandez missed easy calls, and did it with a certain smugness and arrogance that made his face so puchable.
Look at CB Bucknor or Larry Vanover as another Ump who's getting worse. Another one.....Hunter Wendelstadt
CB Bucknor was the 2nd worst umpire who's now taking the reins as the worst one.
2:50 CB Bucknor -- just as bad as Angel, and 100X more arrogant.
How many times has he made an egregious call, gets chewed out by a player or a manager, and just stands there with a smirk on his face knowing that the ump's union is not going to do anything to him? Too numerous to list.
New number one is CB Bucknor followed by Phil Cuzzi.
Hernandez was a blackeye on MLB. He really highlighted the weak spot in the game, which is bad umpiring.
Laz Diaz and CB Bucknor.
The power of the union. Look at teachers. There are plenty who should be out of a job but the union protects them
100%
Actually the data shows Angel has never been the worst MLB umpire or even close to that. It's just that his worst calls are so bad and come at the absolute worst moments.
This is true. By percentage, Angel wasn't even close to the worst umpire, but boy, when he missed calls, it was so obvious that it immediately became a meme. He was involved in so many weird and memorably bad situations that materially affected the outcome of games, it made it hard for any fan to want to see him as part of your team's game.
And he was so arrogant about it.
What about his first and third base calls?
Great Call Angel.
Allow? MLB was *stuck* with him, because the *union* would not *allow* him to be fired.
MLB and the Umpire union are truly the one to blame for this, he just wasn't good enough to hold the position he did for so long. I honestly have zero ill-will toward the guy - he is what he is. The powers that be should have dealt with this years ago.
Im so sick of hearing he kept his job because of his union. NOT TRUE! Players play for unions. If their dont perform, they get released or sent to the minors. I worked for a union, people got fired for job performance all the time.
If you have to ask the question...then you have your answer...
Best commentary I heard. “Ball four, straight down the middle.”
The fact there are 20 umpires worse than him says a lot
Watch nbc or fox bring Angel back as one of those rule analysts like they do with football.
The Umpires Union is supposed to be better organized for integrity - than to end up condoning such behavior and protection.
Next worst umpire? CB Bucknor, ain't it?
I'm sure CloseCallSports will offer a different perspective on this.
I’m glad these guys touched on this topic about grading and performance. I’ve watched all the other shows in the past 48 hours like everyone else and I can’t believe no one is talking about it. Not only was this guy trash for decades, why was he not held responsible or given more training to get better? None of us are perfect at our jobs and we have management teams and training to help us get to the next level, etc. this guy was/is trash and no one in that management group had the ability to give him training? Wtf…
CB bucknor promoted to worst umpire
Bottom line...you're either hurting or helping your company to become better. He was hurting the product and has been doing so for a long time. I'm glad he's gone.
They didn’t force him out….they just made him an offer he couldn’t refuse.
No, the UNION allowed Hernandez stay around too long.
GOOD RIDDANCE
It’s about time 🤦🏻♂️ we was awful
“Angel in disguise” should have been tossed after the first year in the bigs.
MLB better NOT bring him on as an Advisor
Sean Hochuli gets my vote as worse NFL official. Just like his father before him. Those guys string out their penalty explanations so they get maximum face time on TV. Super annoying.
He was so bad if he wasn't on the take that means he was simply inept. Quad-chinned West beat him out the door...
Bring back angel
I don't know the name of another ump. Good riddance.
DEI, everybody knows it.
Hunter Wendelstadt (sp?) is now the worst.
Yes. Next question.
Cb bucknor
Cb buckner and laz diaz next
Yes.
Ol Dem dan says whatever is politically correct. He would say to Angel's face that, yes, he is being discriminated against. Then bash him to ball players off camera or mic. He's waiting for the next Sandler movie (all bad lately).
According to a number of sources, Hernandez graded out as at least an average umpire with a below-average ejection rate. Another YT channel opined that Hernandez lost the discrimination case because his lawyers lacked merit, not the case. Given those factors, it is not the MLBUA's job to force Hernandez into retirement. It is MLB's job to make sure that the CBA does not handcuff its efforts to ensure high-quality officiating. Like players, an umpire's performance declines with age. The big problem with Hernandez seems to be that his mistakes were HUGE, and becoming more common.
Uh ... yes. Was this a trick question?
Duh!!!!! This guy had no business being an ump. This was a diversity hire. He had zero understanding as an ump of baseball. They simply wanted to show that they'll hire anybody but a quality ump to fulfill their quota and I know a lot of people reading this wont have the nubs to back this up for fear of being called racist but this is what dei leads to.
They Keyshawned him.
I guess good umpires are anonymous?
Laz Diaz is next lol remember that name
He was cheating and had friends in the business protecting him
He should have been terminated day 2! he has always been an idiot!!!
Baseball is not on at my house thanks to that dirt ball.
This guy was an absolute embarrassment to the great game of baseball.
Baseball has sucked for a while. Bob nutting has NO business being an owner, mlb hasn’t done a thing to remedy the situation. GREED
Best of luck in retirement, AH.
Joe West is now number 1 worst ump.
Joe West retired 2 years ago
@@HonoluluBlue81 well there's that. lol
