My son has underlying health issues, he's never going to get attendance rewards, and it's other children going to school with horrendous viruses (pressured by the school to keep their attendance high so they go in regardless) who infect him and he takes longer to bounce back. You're basically being rewarded for going in even though you feel rubbish and probably won't have motivation to work etc. The school is trying to keep their attendance high due to the powers that be.. they couldn't care less if the child comes in less than 12 hours after having a sickness bug. The 48 hr policy went out the window at our school 😷😩

I totally agree with you there - we are encouraging students to come into school when they are unwell. If the pandemic taught us anything it's that we need to think about others when we are unwell and stop spreading illness.

Great food for thought! I think it is definitely something that needs an overhaul!

I do think this needs to be talked about more! I've never liked attendance rewards because of these reasons! A lot of dedicated kids have missed out on them because of religious events like Eid and hospital appointments! They shouldn't be counted as a day off! ❤

Love this thought provoking topic. However we need to think about where the knock on affect for attendance rewards has come from. We all know schools have a lot of work to get through in very little time throughout the year. Pressure to deliver this is high. So being in school more often helps, right! Of course it does. But we do not choose how often a child is in school the government does. Would we look at how many weeks are in the academic year to increase learning time. School hours is another example. Do we? No we don’t. So the pressure on the schools is place on the teacher then placed on families. It filters down. The expectations are high.
Yes children can learn how important attendance and time keeping is for their own future development without the reward system.
My child was off school for two and half years yet the school still wanted to mark her in to continue to receive her placement funds. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I think it's a terrible idea. Individual students can earn through good work on merit regardless of attendance. But a sweeping judgement that puts children at risk from their peers is an is an easy way out for hard pressed schools. Unfortunately teachers are so underpaid and undervalued that thy don not have the time, energy or the will to see a way forward. Teachers are wonderful, their salaries should be equal to every MP serving in Government.

I still think it is important enough for attendance rewards because young children need to learn the value for attendance so they will value attendance later in life. Attendance will decrease if you take rewards away.

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts! I agree attendance is important. I wonder if there is a fairer way to encourage good attendance that benifits all students?

@LittleLearnersVideos then it wouldn't be awarding good attendance. Even if it is out of their control when they are younger, it further teaches how life works when you get out in the real world

Rewarding is good in all fields including attendance, sports, art, speaking, manners etc
They will learn the lesson how to respect and accept others success. If someone is good in attendance you might be good in art or in speaking you can get certificate in that.
Every child should get some sort of certificate then there will be no discrimination.
