+Davey Thank you for the awesome words, I try to make the next one better than the previous, not always easy depending on the time that I have. Thank you for being here Davey!
Salut Gel taz! My this is just so great. I was thinking about why I love your videos so much: You play this game with such an affectionate respect for nature and for the animal characters in the game. I grew up spending much of my childhood in the wilderness, and I learned to listen and observe, walking with reverence through the trees and feeling grateful for the rivers that carried me. This is why I can enjoy this game for hours. A player doesn't need to know the animals' habits, sounds, behaviours and patterns to play, but when you take the care to learn them, I believe it makes the play way more fun, and I think it improves the likelihood of success as well. Your skills reflect this kind of attitude, and i will say that I have not yet encountered another player who shares this approach. ("Leave some for nature") Thanks so much, as always!
+geometry dash awesome And Thank you so much for understanding me and what I try to do, to a point were you explain what I try to put out better than I ever could :) I"m so glad you and your little family found this channel! Comments like yours really help me get back into the editing software and pushes me to try to bring you all something to enjoy! I really mean that, you give me energy! Thank you for being here, I'm so happy that you are having a good time.
Very good video, I didn't realize that the game developers had such sophisticated wind mechanics, kudos to Hinterland for being thorough. One thing I'd like is if they added different kinds of firearms, like a .22 and a shotgun, maybe slightly increasing the drop rates for firearms and ammo, but splitting it between the 3 kinds of weapons would make for more uncertainty and variety. I'm thinking the shotgun would do more damage up close, but have much reduced range, have the shells weigh more, but the gun be slightly lighter. The .22 should have the gun be lighter and the ammunition be lighter, found in significantly larger quantities, but do much less damage (i.e. a shot to the head won't kill a charging bear or wolf). Also adding flint that can be crafted in to tools (including knives, hatchets and arrowheads), and allow the crafting of spears would be cool.
Yes a lot have mention that they would love to see a double barreled firearm. You seem to know your stuff :) I want to Thank you for taking the time to share all this with us and Thank you for watching norcofreerider604, much appreciated.
dude! you were reading my mind! I was recently looking for videos exactly like this. anyway I love how this is an instructional video but you still make it a beautiful experience
SO helpful! Thank you very much, GELtaz! I learn something every time I watch your vids :D Nice job. You clearly are knowledgable but also you pause to appreciate the beauty - as I do. I also take pictures even at times when I may be freezing :D I always enjoy your videos.
I'm so glad you enjoyed the video and that it brought a little help. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience, really helps me to keep going. I love this games art touch. Thank you for watching and for being here Linda.
Great video! The technique you use is really well refined and I can't wait to implement theses tips to my own gameplay. Also I think it's really great that this community is so positive. Reading the comments here is really enjoyable, even as a viewer. Anyways, thanks for the video and keep up the good work!
+James Carthew Totally agree, The community here is really awesome I don't ever have to Ban anybody! lool :) Thank you for giving me your perspective I appreciate that a lot, also for the support, keeps me going. Thank you for being here James Carthew!
The reason the rifle's shot seems so low is because these ranges are actually pretty short for a .303 round. Furthermore, the iron sights are modeled correctly, which means that you place your target *ontop* of the iron sights, not 'in' the iron sights.
Wow! Fantastic video! One other tip from Skypiercer, set your mouse aim sensitivity LOW so that it's easier to aim precisely! Nice work with the captions especially at the end summary. I really like your tip of lining up the direction of travel of the deer so that we are head on and so the deer will return on the same path. As mentioned by one of the forum viewers who is deaf, he can't get the talk so he has to rely on subtitles or captions. Subtitles can of course, be added after the video is posted and other folks can also add captions for your video. One note I would add is that if people find its difficult to get the last second shot at a charging wolf, you always have an option to use a torch! Unfortunately, if you are set up with the bow or rifle, it can be very tricky to get the torch equipped since you have to cycle through the other lighting options like match, lantern and flare. You can memorize what items you have to just press the 1 button two or three times to quickly get the torch but if that wolf is already in charging mode, you may not have time to actually light the torch. It seems like we can no longer creep up on a feeding wolf as I used to do and nail it with the arrow; I wonder if that is related to wind direction? They say in the wikia that the injuries on a bear don't stack however it sure seems like they do. For example, you got one arrow into the bear and then got him with a rifle shot for the insta-kill. I really hate when the bear charges because if you don't get lucky, you're going to take a nasty bear attack, loose condition and probably not be able to fully harvest either the original prey or the bear. In the situation with a charging bear, you won't have time to make fire or light a torch; only the flare gun will stop the charge. Which button equips the flare pistol? I guess it must be 2?
+Stephen Pushak Yes pretty sure its 2. Thank you for sharing your tips as well Stephen. The mouse sensitivity depends of the player, some players prefer a very sensible mouse, others don't. I wanna say Thank you a great deal for all the support you bring me on the channel but also on the Hinterlands forum. Much appreciated friend, really nice of you Stephen!
yeah, I've fought a lot of wolves but always have trouble finding them later. Sometimes you just luck out. Won't they return to their patrol area? oh well. We have very little ammo left so we've been letting the wolves take the deer and then trying to scare them off with fire and torch. Works a little bit esp if you shoot an arrow nearby or in the face. That tactic is working out well but not on the lake, over at the clear cut. We should put a tracker beacon on them!
Thanks to you my first deer kill was a one-shot, I headed out from Trappers Homestead and ended up in unknown pond, found a deer in front of my and shot- I was so excited. I almost died on the way back, but I got inside and cooked up that deer meat hella quick. Thanks for the help! (This was today, I've only started playing recently, and my friend hasn't gotten a one-shot yet and he's been playing for a year and a half.)
+Sergio Murillo Sorry about your weekend, but I am really happy that you had a good time with the video! It's purpose is fulfilled :) Thank you for watching!
Hinterland Studios will be introducing Moose wildlife in The Long Dark as of December 2017, I wonder what you can harvest and craft from it. Perhaps they'll introduce new weapons and tools as well. Keep up with the great videos!
Good video! I really like your playstyle, and how much you pay attention to the aesthetics of the game. Also the fact that you play music by Chris Zabriskie. I'm really impressed!
Hey man, thank you for all the good tips with the bow. Now that the flare/torch trick is not working anymore (or working only in a certain percentage of situations), one's bow skills are precious, as you have way more limited rifle shots than bow shots :) You've just got yourself another subscribe!
Once I shot 10 arrows trying to hit a wolf that was eating a carcass, but when I went to try to reclaim them they were on weak ice... Down 10 arrows, which translates to many hours exploring and preparing for the forge. And nothing to show for it :c
Dropped a deer in the ravine. Snuck up on it, then tried the stand and shoot method and down he went. I was kind of surprised. I previously had tried it on a deer, had a perfect shot, except that the arrow stuck in the tree graphic that I was half-way hiding behind. Talk about surprise and disappointment. :)
so finally found a rifle and a few rounds. This helped me not waste it all - cheers! Why not have raw meat on you when hunting? Doesn't it work as a decoy so you can get a good shot at the wolf?
Excellent tutorial, this should be included as an avi file with the full release game. My only niggle would be I'd never take a second shot (or waste arrows on bunnies!), in TLD if you hit it, it dies eventually and you get a couple of days to find it if need be. I recently chased a deer around Coastal highway with my arrow in its hoof (looked hilarious), I think it took longer to die because the wound was less serious but it did go down - just before dinner. They do sometimes run where the player can't reach though, arrow thieving gits. I hope Hinterland refine blood trails to go fainter with time instead of just vanish, but as you say an open area is best anyway. Maybe you should have tacked that lighthouse headshot onto the end: "Here's one I did earlier, tee hee". Maybe not. Oh, and they mentioned practice targets in the game now, I saw one by the red barn in Pleasant Valley but was on my way to the mountain and didn't try it. Maybe it damages your arrows less than trees etc? Anyway, great vid and thanks for the mention - that beats saying all the names you can remember out loud alright, was wondering when you'd think of it!
+Jytton Lames Right I know I forgot to talk about that!!!!! I always forget something.... If you were to ask me which video would you redo to add info or other, well, all of them! I will mention it in the next TLD video. I agree with you for the most part, then again it depends of the situation. Yes it can be less of a hassle to just let the wild life die and sleep in a car for an hour or other and find him afterwards, but, what if you don't find him?, or even worse what if you get attack by a wolf while looking for the body, or it just out of reach etc etc, things could go wrong. So if you are confident in your second shot I think you should take it because what could of cost you only 1/4 of an arrows condition can quickly escalate. But don't get me wrong for the most part I agree with you that its just easier to let it die. And remember you are not wasting the whole arrow, but just 1/4 or 1/5 of it. Cool Idea you have there for the blood fading, I like it! Don't think the arrow target damages less the arrows, would be cool though! Lol I might still say the names out loud next time, will see. Because I didn't put everybody and it ads editing work., but ya better I agree. Thank you for sharing your thoughts Jytton much appreciated budy and as usual you old sub you, thank you for the awesome support!
+GEL taz Oh, it's not a strategy. I'd never take a second shot because after almost a year of playing and watching your vids I'm still bloody terrible with that bow! Hard enough to hit them walking towards you, but galloping away at 100mph? Nah, that's a job for GEL taz right there, or that chick from Hunger Games (maybe). That was totally a lovely one on the venison buddy at the end btw, I didn't realise the distance first time I watched. Still got the magic buddy!
+Jytton Lames I took a stroll over to the barn last night to try out that target. It does only 10% damage to arrows if you hit the paper target, more if you hit the wicker surround. I got some nice grouping then reloaded (from entering the barn) and tried again. So there's no point really, if you (not you Gt, people in general!) want to practice just save the game by entering a building, go out and shoot stuff, then quit and reload with all arrows intact. Just don't get bit or sprain anything or it saves. Kind of kills the mood though. Anyway, I'm still rubbish so what do I know?
+Jytton Lames lol James! Oh ya I wanted to mention that as well, go out and go back in to save and out again to practice, but like you said could kill the mood so, maybe its a good thing that I forgot. I'm sure you are better than you think, you must believe in your shot buddy, and don't be scare to try out crazy things, that way the more regular shot will become easier :)
Hey Geltaz! Any chance of a video dealing with how to go hand to hand with the wolves? I keep loosing the carcasses on ML. At least on DP, the map is small and you can find them when they die! It's also a frustrating way to loose precious arrows if you don't get a quick kill. I hope they give us a new animal to hunt and fight. Cougar would be awesome!
+Stephen Pushak New animals to hunt would be cool! I'm currently working on a Bear Hunting Video, not sure is will see the light of day yet, not satisfied with it, but not much time lately so... Thanks for your Ideas though, I always appreciate them Stephen!
I try to get good ideas. But sooner or later the game will be done and we'll have figured everything out. Perhaps they will open the game for modding one day. That would be nice. Imagine your are creeping along the side of a cliff to stay out of the wind and BAM!! A cougar lands on your back! That's how they hunt; ambush.
+Stephen Pushak They will, Hinterlands once mentioned already that once the game done, they will fully support the modding community. So I think we will see all kind of different survival scenario in the work shop. lol cougar ambush from the skies! :)
+Stephen Pushak I have been lucky with my arrows. I have had a deer and a wolf run off after being hit, but found the carcasses later and recovered the arrows. Might try working the area along the train tracks south of the Camp Office or maybe the area south of the train bridge. The areas are either pretty open so a carcass is relatively easily visible on the snow or the terrain is more restrictive and containing - if a wounded wolf runs against such, it can turn around can come back the way it came (i.e. right towards you). If possible I would avoid any place where there can be rocks which being dark can conceal a carcass. I once heard a wounded wolf die but no carcass was easily visible among the trees and rocks and I searched but never found it. Might also try to keep it under observation until it starts to limp which means the end is near.
Great vid it seems u hve put a butt load of time into it and I love how u take random photos when u r all serous 😄 can u do a top 5 places to live in the long dark please I'm not saying u hve to its just I want some cool places to live love the vids man story mode HYPE
I used to wait for wolf to kill deer and then i killed the wolf. but wolves aren't so easy to hunt nowadays, they don't come straight at you anymore. still, wolves are what you kill the most
arrows are 90% renewable, i just harvest them when they break if you harvest them right before they break you get 3 feathers back instead of 2. (as well as the arrowhead of course). you just need to make the arrow shafts.
So is this only applicable after you level up the bow skill? When I take a bow shot, the arrows seem to go 5 feet to the right or left. They don't go straight.
Yes your bow will stay way more steady once you've reached lever 5 or is earlier than level 5. But note that running and mostly fatigue will also affect the way your Bow sways. Thank you for commenting and for being here Graxster.
+GEL taz I don't know if I qualify as experienced or not but I think your video is helpful for all levels of play since you have taken the time to experiment and master all of these techniques. There is only one technique I can think of not covered and that is the use of camp fires to redirect the deer. For example, if the deer also avoid fire (why wouldn't they?) then you could set one or two fires up and then try to herd the deer toward that. On open ice, probably it doesn't work too well but maybe it could be adapted for somewhere where the deer has to go down a narrow canyon section such as TWM. Just a crazy thought. Maybe not very useful.
Get a hunk of raw fish or meat. Go to Fishing shack with door across from huts on CH. Fishing makes less noise. When the wolves come, kill 4 for wolfhide coat. HARVEST and store guts, pelts and wolf meat in proper locations to cure or chill. Deer hunt in relative peace for a few minutes. You can also draw bears the same way to the shack...walking them in slowly...back into the but and fire from relative safety. Build fires and harvest and cook. Instant fishing hut full of hides and guts curing...meat on ice😃
That bear kill at 19:40, i thought you were done for after that 1 arrow shot, hahah! Nice save.
+Kushhmeister Hihi thanks man! Trust me, I thought I was a goner too lol. Thank you for the comment and for watching!

One note I would add is that if people find its difficult to get the last second shot at a charging wolf, you always have an option to use a torch! aw shucks! credit goes to you! You have an awesome channel. Thanks for supporting TLD.
+Stephen Pushak I wonder if that works for chasing wounded wolves too; if you can steer them to where you can recover them after they bleed out.
No pretty sure they run in a random, freaking out direction :)
yeah, I've fought a lot of wolves but always have trouble finding them later. Sometimes you just luck out. Won't they return to their patrol area? oh well. We have very little ammo left so we've been letting the wolves take the deer and then trying to scare them off with fire and torch. Works a little bit esp if you shoot an arrow nearby or in the face. Side shots also can can the arrows to get stuck under the body. For some challenges can be a problem.

thanks for adding this, great tips! really helped me out a lot
Gald it help you Anne Farley I really am! Thank you for taking the time to comment and for watching.

GEL taz
Cougar and moose are mentioned in the latest teaser announcement today!

What kind words. Thank you for being here jin dejin
is there any chance that youll play with cam?i just love listening to your voice with a big big big salute for not using cursed word unlike the others
when u go to forge to smelt arrow heads how many do u recommend smelting if u are not going to return to the
map? ?
I enjoy having 4 or 5 minimum on me, plus you loose some and you get the first Bow skill when crafting 15 arrows if that didn't change so 15 is nice.
GELtaz only sweet! I made 18... off to coastal highway now!
do saplings re spawn?
No, not at the moment but might change.
how do you know which way is the wind blowing on a clear day with almost no wind, there are no idicators like in the video
Dude, you are a beast with that bow! :)
I practiced a lot, get lucky a lot, and ya... :) Thank you for the kind words and for watching.
I used to wait for wolf to kill deer and then i killed the wolf. but wolves aren't so easy to hunt nowadays, they don't come straight at you anymore. still, wolves are what you kill the most
They are evolving with the player! Love this games development! Thank you for watching and for commenting eelco8800.
Thanks. Great as always :)
+Heather Johnson Thank you for being here Heather :)
I really appreciate all that you do. Oh and by the way. New GTX 660, 550W power supply plus the added ram is working out great :)
+Heather Johnson Thank you :) Nice, Upgrade! Cool I'm happy it all work out for you.
What if animals have vitals and organs maybe why can't always one shot
how many arrows should I have with me to be save? I currently have 3.
I guess it also depends on your shooting skill, one will break eventually so 4 or 5 on you with a back up at your safe house should be enough.
Thanks for watching.
+GELtaz thx man I'll keep that in mind. You're awesome!
arrows are 90% renewable, i just harvest them when they break
if you harvest them right before they break you get 3 feathers back instead of 2. (as well as the arrowhead of course). you just need to make the arrow shafts.
Question, is it possible to use the Snow Shelter as a sort of deer blind?
Not sure, never really tried that. Thank you for the comment and for watching Shepard1707.
What song do you use in this video? It's beautiful. Thanks!
This was helpful... I hunt in real life and its different from the game mechanics... my instinct for the real betrays me in game.
I see, yes pretty sure we are far for the real thing but love were this game is heading. Thank you for commenting and for watching Allegheny500.
could you also do a video on hunting bears? That's the only animal I have a lot of trouble with :P
+Frostdragon12 Right, will see what I can do :)
I loved this but im so stupid and poor at shooting moving animals. :(
You have my attention! :)
+Grieving Sage LOL!. :) I wanna say its for less experienced players Sir! Thanks for watching man, I hope you enjoy!
+GEL taz Oh now, c'mon, I started trying to hunt better because of you taz. this is great stuff!
+Grieving Sage Thanks man! :)
Ya this video was more to demonstrate everything with out the use of a Flare, Torch or FIre, I should of been more precise with that.
they really should add co op
It would be cool! I'm hopping Coop for Subnautica as well, but there two, don't think it will be possible. Thank you for watching.
Hey Gel taz! how's it going?
Thanks for the tips and great video as always
+Bulletproof94 Good! Thank you for watching!
24:23 I would maybe shot that deer, but just meybe:D You know what I meanxD
Lol! I do! Thank you for being here Nemesis Espanol
nice tips ! but i dont know how to get bow so this doesent help me
this little bugs are funny and make easier to hunting -bad english-.
lol Yes! Thanks for the comment buddy and for watching.
Great tips. Unfortunately any sense of realism is lost and game is bs. Might as well be having Super Mario dunk wolverines in a basket.
Weird, comment but Thank you for watching RC .Rhinehart
Get a hunk of raw fish or meat. Go to Fishing shack with door across from huts on CH. Fishing makes less noise. When the wolves come, kill 4 for wolfhide coat. HARVEST and store guts, pelts and wolf meat in proper locations to cure or chill. Deer hunt in relative peace for a few minutes. You can also draw bears the same way to the shack...walking them in slowly...back into the but and fire from relative safety. Build fires and harvest and cook.
Instant fishing hut full of hides and guts curing...meat on ice😃
cool vid man!
+cheuche Thanks man! Thank you for the comment and for watching!
