This guy is awesome. As someone who has drifted from the faith this guy takes me one step nearer to returning to the faith. Not yet though. I'm still not there. Maybe I won't. But one thing is for sure, this guy speak the truth about how we should live.
If you here people talking about New Monasticism run from them far...the term has been hijacked by the liberal agenda, using christianese the language of contemporary Christians they are spouting a liberal Christianity. . .their are preaching another Jesus . . .I repent of ever using the term... This man is not preaching the Christianity of Christ, he is preaching illiberal agenda that's been christianized... Or he's using using christianese...to spout a liberal agenda... He never speaks about sin and over coming sin... He is spouting in christianese a liberal agenda..run from him fast this is not the Christ of the Bible he's preaching about... Liberalism is a sin the mental disease, Repent of your sins...turn from your sins, run from your sins . . .for the Wages of Sin is death. . . New Monasticism at one time was an honorable, term...but so many people are using it . . .it doesn't mean Christianity of the Bible any more, and a tolerate Jesus that allow you to stay in your sins . . . It's a christianized liberalism lots of social justice lots of good works, but never the preaching of the Cross, or the blood and repentance of sin . . .
If what he is saying is of God then why doesn't he preach against sin? Or why is he not using Bible verses...from a Bible when he speaks...the most loving thing Shane could tell is audience is to repent of their sins...turn or burn For the Wages of Sin is death . . .you need to repent of your sins, and then put your faith in Jesus like you would a parachute if you where going to jump out of an airplane...you can't just look at the parachute, you have to put it on...Put on the Lord Jesus Christ and by faith be saved...Shane never preaches about the Cross, repentance from sin...and the Blood of Christ . . .but 99 percent of the time he preaches a very liberal agenda and it's okay to be a sinner, or at least he never explains what sin is and that we need to stop it turn from it repent of it and put our hope to be able to overcome it in Christ . . .now this is a loving comment... I attended the ELCA youth confrence and it really moved me, it crosses my mind every single day. I'm a junior in high school, everyone has their futures planned out. I had not a clue in the world.. I was rewatching these videos and thinking, nothing makes me happier than sharing God's word. So it finally hit me.. I want to spend my life making a difference in my world, and share what I've learned with my neighbors. I love my religion.
What Shane Teaches isn't the Gospel but what is called Progressive Christianity, sinning is okay, their is no Hell, or Heaven, it's about all the social justice projects that you can do while you're still alive... because once your dead their is nothing else... Jesus was primarily just a good moral teacher... Christianity is simply a philosophy of moral living and doing good to your fellow man there's nothing else to it.

Man, I love people arguing in RUclips videos. Why can't we all just get along? Hating on someone for thinking differently than you isn't much better than condemning someone for being a jerk.
And when I said majority of all Christians, I was not talking about personal experience. I was referring to surveys (you know like what Claiborne referred to when he started his speech). And it's not just a majority of Christians it's a majority of Americans. Among Christians it's probably more a super-majority. Christianity is much bigger than the ELCA. (Thank God!!!)
Wow, you're really blowing what he said out of proportion. Also, I'm only 15, don't get all sassy on me. He never once stated that 'doctrine does not matter.' Until he says that, you can only ASSUME that he thinks that. He was just trying to say that what truly truly matters is love, and living a life like Jesus. Being kind.
@ MackLeeGreen: I don't see why being a Christian has to be a competition of who can go to the greatest extremes. Wouldn't that kind of defeat the point of it all?
And I am not just focusing on the one comment he made about the virgin-birth. He started out by referencing a poll among unchurched people that indicated a high percentage of them had negative opinions of the church. Well duh, why do you they're unchurched?? That should challenge us of course, but does it mean that we modify the message?? No. Does it mean we never talk about sin?? No. Should we be surprised at these polls? No, Jesus told us that we would be hated because of His name.
He said when you stand before Jesus He isn't going to care about your doctrine (which is essentially saying Jesus isn't going to care what you believe). He doesn't need to use the words "doctrine does not matter' when he says Jesus doesn't care whether you believe He was born of a virgin or not. Saying that says enough. So tell me, do you think it matters whether we believe in the virgin-birth?
I used to call myself a New Monastic, but not any more. . . To many people are making up what New Monasticism is...another name for it is Progressive Christianity. . . They pick and choose what part of the Bible they're going to believe. . . Much of New Monasticism, is christian sounding words mixed with new age technologies... The term New Monasticism was coined by Dietrich Bonhoeffer in his book the cost of discipleship . . ."it was a defense against cheap Grace". . .but modern men have taken this term and twisted it to being something, that Dietrich Bonhoeffer never meant for it to be . . .grace is free, but it will cost you everything, it's the Pearl of Great Price . . . The Cost Luke 14:33. . . . . .Luke 9:21-24: "Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me. But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions. Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven. And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God." . Matthew 19:27-29: "Then answered Peter and said unto him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed thee; what shall we have therefore? And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life." . Luke 14:33: "So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple." . Luke 18:22-25: 22 When Jesus heard that, he said, “Then there’s only one thing left to do: Sell everything you own and give it away to the poor. You will have riches in heaven. Then come, follow me.” 23 This was the last thing the official expected to hear. He was very rich and became terribly sad. He was holding on tight to a lot of things and not about to let them go. 24-25 Seeing his reaction, Jesus said, “Do you have any idea how difficult it is for people who have it all to enter God’s kingdom? I’d say it’s easier to thread a camel through a needle’s eye than get a rich person into God’s kingdom.” Jesus is Lord ישוע הוא אלוהים The only Way you can be a better believer in Christ . . .is to be a better believer in Christ. 1. Read your Bible... study it. Believe what the Bible says... 2. Prayer, pray, praise and worship, thanks given...pray without ceasing. 3. Fellowship with Believers . . . Fall in love with your brothers and sisters, care about them above all . . .put others first... 4. Do the great commission...going into all the World, living with what you can carry, Preaching the Gospel of Salvation to everyone... -Friar Rodney Burnap .
PlanetRockJesus I prefer to think of them as the Jesus-following, pro-tolerance and acceptance, social justice-seeking denomination. You should really check out Nadia Bolz-Weber, she's a great example of a progressive minister leading others to Christ!
PlanetRockJesus I feel your pain; I really do. For what it's worth, I am against the ordination of unrepentant, practicing homosexuals. I am against gay marriage, although I cannot see how my position can be legally defended. I am pro-life, in every respect. One thing, though, and your responses seem to bear this out: Things are the way they are now, not in reaction to the love, justice, and mercy those in the Church have shown; Christians are not despised for their humility, the fruit of the Spirit they bear, or the examples in holiness, righteousness, and Godliness they set. No, from the moment the Puritans set foot on this continent, the Church has all too often been on the wrong side of every important moral debate, from the treatment of Native Peoples, slavery, suffrage, civil rights, equality in the workplace, and social justice around the world, but especially in Central and South America. Evangelicalism has become far too tied to the political and economic apron strings of Conservatism, which has far more in common with the demonic teachings of the anti-Christ Ayn Rand than it does with the teachings of Jesus Christ. Christians are perceived as ugly because they have been hideous; mean-spirited because all to often they are; unloving because the most damnable among them get the most press--and I mean on FOX, not traditional "liberal" media. Like Shane said--and God's word!--it doesn't matter if your theology is perfect to every jot and tittle: If you have no love, you are nothing--no, worse than nothing: you are a hindrance.
PlanetRockJesus Maybe this is time for the old saying, "In essentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberty; and in everything, love." The evangelical and progressive wings of the church can disagree over the LGBT community but still be united in our ultimate goal of spreading the Gospel to everyone.
Reid Russom There are no progressive wings of the church. Titus 1:16 says they claim to know God, but in works they deny him. If you say that it's OK to be gay, you are denying God. Jesus says to beware (be aware) of false Christs, and I am. I am well aware of the false Christ preached by Shane Claiborne and others; that false Christ that allows people to continue in their sin and still be saved. What "non-essentials" are you speaking of, Reid? I cannot be "united" with preachers of a false Christ, a false Gospel, and a false Christianity.
Did he not at one point suggest that it doesn't really matter whether we believe in the virgin-birth? The virgin-birth is in the creeds for a reason and that reason is that it is an essential doctrine. That was no accident that he picked an essential doctrine. He could have very easily picked a non-essential but he didn't. He picked an essential, and it wasn't by accident. It's because he thinks doctrine does not matter.
..which commanded that adulterous women be killed. By what He says to the men He shows that Mosaic penalty is no more. But then by what He says to the woman He shows that the 10 commandments are still in effect and He calls us to repent. The head-covering rules refers to a headship-principle and those rules describe how they were applied in that congregation. But since you have taken my logic to what you see as it's natural conclusion then lets do the same with your logic..
I have no problem with protesting a law. However, I do find it irresponsible to tell a group of teenagers that, disobeying the police (which we have taught our children to respect the law and authority), is okay. They are other peaceful ways to help fellow man.
Majority of all Christians? Now that isn't true. I can honestly say that most of the people I know are pro-choice and are really really accepting of people, despite their sexuality as well. But maybe that's just where I'm from. All I said was his point is - live life like Jesus did. I don't care if you're pro-choice or pro-life. I don't care if you support gays or don't support gays- although I wish some people would be more accepting. Just be kind. Do right.
Ahh the classic revisionist kenard of pointing to the ceremonial laws. That is dealt with in Corinthians where Paul says that we no longer judge each other according to sabbaths festivals etc. This is also why Jesus tells the men who were about to kill the adulterous woman "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.." But then see what Jesus says next to the woman "Go and sin no more". Jesus recognizes that these men were going by the Mosaic law...
Claiborne would have us believe that doctrine is not important. Really Shane?? Because doctrine is teaching. In the story of the feeding of the 5000 (which I am sure you reduce to some social-justice call) when Jesus sees the large crowd it says He had compassion on them because they were like sheep without a shepherd so He taught them many things. He taught them before He fed them/ So clearly Jesus thinks doctrine is very important. I am going to go with Jesus on this one Shane.
Shane Peach against sin... But you have to judge your circumstances first before you can make a decision what is the right way to go... Romans 1:26-27, 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, and 1 Timothy 1:9-10, Jude 1:7, Matthew 19:4-6 and Mark 10:6-9 All these verses are New Testament, verses, how many of them have to be saying something is a sin . . .before you will preach against it, and tell people to repent of it... Romans 6:23 King James Version (KJV) 23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. P.S. You don't ask the World, to Judge the Church, mankind out side of Christ love their sins, they love their pornography, they're drinking, their adultery...so if you ask the World what they think of the church, the church is everything, the world hates . . .or they would come to the light so their sins can be exposed, and they can repent of them . . .and get their hearts right before God . . .instead you preach about what the world thinks of the church as it is a good thing. . .sin will keep you out of heaven, you will ever know when you will have to stand before God and give an account . . .repent of your sins, because the Wages of sin is death . . .in a devil's hell, but the free gift of God is eternal life with Christ in heaven...for all eternity. . . Preach the Gospel of Salvation to everyone...then preach about works of righteousness . . . But you need to get saved to be righteous, before your good works matters before a holy and righteous God. . . because self righteousness is as filthy rags . . .
In that spirit, then, I'd like to lovingly tell you that I hope you don't hold any bank accounts. There are more verses of scripture that condemn collecting interest than condemn homosexuality. I also hope you don't pray while not adhering to the head-covering rules Paul speaks of, or if you're using the Leviticus passages, that you also follow all the rules for shaving and eating and sleeping. If we're going to "lovingly" be each others' judges, we'd best be consistent. Judgement is the Lord's.
Excuse me? And yeah, but that survey was just a little one. What non-Christians thought Christians to be. But that's besides the point. It is NOT A MAJORITY OF AMERICANS. I'd say it's pretty even, if you're referring to people being pro-choice, pro-life, blahblahblah.
You say we're never supposed to judge. Well if that's true (it's not) then you are placing yourself in violation of it by telling me that I should not judge. You are judging me. Judge not lest ye be judged does not mean never judge, it means don't judge according to a standard you are not willing to live to yourself. In 1st Corinthians 5 Paul says we are to judge those within the church. Jesus announces the coming of the Kingdom of God with a call to repentance.
You have been fooled by the language already. You think, because I recognize that scripture condemns homosexuality then I don't "accept" gay people. Not true at all. I accept them and love them as I do anyone. And because I accept and love people I will lovingly tell them when they are engaging in behavior that God condemns, and which is incredibly unhealthy. I would want someone to do that for me. I would not want them to not tell me because they were afraid they might offend me.
Taking your logic to it's natural conclusion in another way. If a husband were to cheat on his wife, the wife would be wrong to hold her husband accountable. By your logic it is never appropriate for us to ever condemn anyone for anything. Interesting that you ignore the fact that Shane is so condemning of the "fundamentalists" he refers to.
Jesus preached more on Hell than he did heaven...Hodos! -Friar Rodney Burnap
Ahhh, revisionist logic. You accuse fundamentalists of condemning everyone who disagrees with them by condemning all fundamentalists. Nobody played the martyr, I was just pointing out Claiborne's inconsistencies. And the bible is neither a political party (as if I said it was) nor a plan of action (law). It is, as Luther called it, the "cradle of Christ".
I found this speaker to be humorous, inspiring, and convicting!

Maybe the best Christian preacher since Desmond Tutu? I'm not sure, but he is absolutely fantastic.
Means to love and live for His love daily! Means to love God with all your heart and love your neighbor as yourself...

He never once stated that 'doctrine does not matter.' Until he says that, you can only ASSUME that he thinks that. He was just trying to say that what truly truly matters is love, and living a life like Jesus. Being kind.
One of the most loving things you can tell somebody is they are going to HELL if they don't get Saved.. .. ..
Turn or Burn!
It's this exact version of theology that make people turn away from Christ.
The captions are all over the place! His accent must have messed up the AI transcription tech. at one part it said "Ride kumar back" :P

12:45, my favorite part
He said when you stand before Jesus He isn't going to care about your doctrine (which is essentially saying Jesus isn't going to care what you believe). He doesn't need to use the words "doctrine does not matter' when he says Jesus doesn't care whether you believe He was born of a virgin or not. Saying that says enough. So tell me, do you think it matters whether we believe in the virgin-birth?
It matters. We need to be Christians first and foremost - Shane is absolutely wrong on this point.
6:22 Hey, look, it's me!
And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God."
. And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life."
. Luke 14:33: "So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple."
. I’d say it’s easier to thread a camel through a needle’s eye than get a rich person into God’s kingdom.”
Jesus is Lord ישוע הוא אלוהים
The only Way you can be a better believer in Christ . . .is to be a better believer in Christ.

I prefer to think of them as the Jesus-following, pro-tolerance and acceptance, social justice-seeking denomination.

Maybe this is time for the old saying, "In essentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberty; and in everything, love." The evangelical and progressive wings of the church can disagree over the LGBT community but still be united in our ultimate goal of spreading the Gospel to everyone.
Where did I say Christianity was a competition??
The gospel according to Shane??
what is 'live' the gospel ?
Somehow I think he's well aware of what he looks like.
3:08, the caption... what?
#cwts12
he said ass hehe
..which commanded that adulterous women be killed.
I respectfully disagree, so do most of the people that changed history.
I wonder if anyone has ever told him that he looks like Joe Dirt.... maybe it's just me.
Shane Peach against sin...
But you have to judge your circumstances first before you can make a decision what is the right way to go...
Romans 1:26-27, 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, and 1 Timothy 1:9-10, Jude 1:7, Matthew 19:4-6 and Mark 10:6-9
All these verses are New Testament, verses, how many of them have to be saying something is a sin . . .before you will preach against it, and tell people to repent of it...
Romans 6:23 King James Version (KJV)
23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
P.S. You don't ask the World, to Judge the Church, mankind out side of Christ love their sins, they love their pornography, they're drinking, their adultery...so if you ask the World what they think of the church, the church is everything, the world hates . . .or they would come to the light so their sins can be exposed, and they can repent of them . . .and get their hearts right before God . . .instead you preach about what the world thinks of the church as it is a good thing. . .sin will keep you out of heaven, you will ever know when you will have to stand before God and give an account . . .repent of your sins, because the Wages of sin is death . . .in a devil's hell, but the free gift of God is eternal life with Christ in heaven...for all eternity. . .
Preach the Gospel of Salvation to everyone...then preach about works of righteousness . . . But you need to get saved to be righteous, before your good works matters before a holy and righteous God. . . because self righteousness is as filthy rags . . .
I think you're twisting what he's meaning.
Repent or Perish you could go into all eternity at any second at any age car accident an aneurysm if you choke on your food, death waits for No one, repent of your sins, and make Jesus the Lord of your life...John 3:3...
I have a hard time with a guy who basically tells kids it's okay to break the law. There are other ways to change things.......
