Federer, in this video, really bends his knees--he is almost in a sitting position. I would imagine this promotes a good low-to-high racquet path. Also, while as you say there is not much arm activity in the unit turn, Federer raises his racquet hand from waist height to shoulder height to promote a considerable loop in his backswing.
Nice - I like the emphasis on turning the body rather than throwing the arms back on the execution of the unit turn.

Unit turn only involves shoulder and trunk. In this video his whole body turned sideways.
