As a South African it is not fun to watch Super rugby anymore. All the players you like move overseas and then you are left supporting a b or even a c team of the club you support.

Now I think that this works out well for SA rugby because otherwise we would not see these new young and exciting players coming through the SA system.

I'm sure this will be a good thing for world rugby.

After consulting my crystal ball I foresee the following :
    - Super rugby will end at the end of the 2020 season. RIP
    - South Africa will go north to the Guinness league, which will be renamed ‘Castle of Guinness Pro Infinity’, and will have 6 SA teams. SA will work on getting into the Champions Cup and will win it within 3 years of entry.
    - after collective heart attacks, NZ and Australia will desperately schmooze around Asia, trying to set up an Asia-Pacific league, going cap in hand to the FMG guy (from Western Australia, forget his name) and other big business people to please finance it.
    - the Aussie and NZ player drain will be a vortex and the Rugby union landscape in both countries will be a desolate, rolling tumbleweed desert......
    Wow, that.escalated. I’m depressed now 😂😂😂

    • @Formakiwi
      @Formakiwi 5 лет назад

Doubtful, for a number of reasons. First, the Pro 14 is already creaking with two (regularly shit) SA teams, and already looking at more franchises in the USA and Germany, so it would become the Pro 20. Secondly, and related, the Irish and Welsh provinces that currently dominate that competition would baulk at allowing much stronger SA teams into "their" competition, as like you say it would probably lead to loss of dominance for them. Thirdly, the player drain is in many ways self-regulating, as the Northern clubs are facing salary-cap restrictions and quotas on overseas talent (though not in Japan I believe), so there can only be so many per year. That said, without some large revenues from a competition like SR, it would be hard for the Australian and NZ franchises to remain viable, especially given the dwindling attendance at matches in the regular season.

The problem is... SA get 30 to 50 thousand fans to games and NZ AND Aus can't string together half of that. SA gives the biggest financial input into Super Rugby. SA would triple that if they move to Europe so it's going to come down to money. NZ and Auz will lose out as they will play against weaker teams from South Pacific and Asia... Biggest loses will be Aus and NZ. SA hold the cards at this stage.

Some of us remember when the NZ domestic competition was huge.....even in the early years of super rugby the NPC was still very popular. (Because all the top players played a shorter Super Rugby season they had time to play NPC and the domestic competition got better with players returning with international experience)
I think NZ could survive with a domestic only comp. They could add Aussie teams and pacific teams if it was economically viable
World rugby has to watch out though. Rugby league is getting very popular in NZ and the Pacific islands and Union is dying in Aussie. If the goal of rugby nations is to kill off all the opposition and become the last country standing then they are on the right track. If the goal is to grow the game and get stronger together then ignore Pacific rugby at your peril

I understand people in SA are frustrated losing the lot of the good players to watch going to world wide leagues but this is how the South Africa national team keeps strong. The top tier players go play for the money they deserve Europe/ Japan..... and that leaves more money to invest into new young talent and it becomes a cycle of rebuilding new players. This gives the South Africa rugby union a globe of players to pick and choose from when forming the springbok team. This really is a big advantage for South Africa.

A decade ago I would have said no ways. Now SA going North is making more sense. If we can get 2 teams in each Northern comp and then rebuild the currie cup around another 2 domestic sides I think it will strengthen SA rugby all around as long as SA can get the money from North. Rugby championship must stay though. Will make it extra interesting.

  • @ruanverwey4141

As a South African I think it is a good decision. Hate to leave the southern hemisphere, tournament, but it makes more sense. We still make good money and player development and the island team get a potential platform to develop (hopefully also generating some moneyto keep their players). Time difference is better for everyone and SA can build our Currie Cup (local and the oldest rugby tournament to it's full strength again).
Then we can have solid 5 test tournaments against the southern hemisphere throughout the year...... just my thoughts...

Super Rugby teams need to play in smaller stadiums and fill them up. Looks awful to see a nearly empty stadium on video.
    Plus Super Rugby needs Promotion/Relegation.
SA teams leaving Super Rugby is likely, but they’ll be joining the Pro14 which is the equivalent of Super Rugby in he north, a lackluster comp, silly divisions when Pro/Rel would make for a better product, which would lead to more TV deals, which leads to more money, and the cycle continues on from there.

Would love to see all the SA teams join the Pro14, make it a pro/rel league, and then add a pro team in the bottom division from Germany, Spain, Russia, Romania, Georgia, the Netherlands, Portugal, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Kenya... that would make the Pro14 something different and special

But Ospreys, Dragons, Zebre and Kings are really no good. The competition would be really good if there were 4 strong South African teams, and maybe only two Welsh teams. I also think there is a need for a professional tier 2 club tournament in Europe. It could be started quite easy with the best professional teams from Italy and Romania, then other teams from Spain, Germany etc could join once it's up and running.

    • @MichaeldeSousaCruz
      @MichaeldeSousaCruz 5 лет назад

Chester Donnelly if the Pro14 went to a Pro/Rel system, then the Welsh could include that 5th north wales team they’ve been looking for without sacrificing (and upsetting once again like they’ve done in the past) one of the already established teams.
I’ve heard talk of dividing Leinster province into 2 teams, north and south, so there would be more pathways to develop Irish talent at a higher level.
I can’t see a way that the Pro14 would outcompete the money making machines that are the Premiership and Top14, as it is currently set up. Setting a top division and a bottom division and expansion into the other European and African countries would broaden their viewership and increase TV deals, which means more moolah for all the teams involved. Plus it helps to develop the international game in those other countries (but why would the current Pro14 unions want to increase international competitiveness anyways? 😉 They can keep on patting themselves on the back as the 3rd most watched international sport competition, behind the FIFA World Cup and the Olympics)

I agree. One simple reason, the Euro is much stronger than the NZ and AU dollar, not to mention the SA Rand. And whether we like it or not the time zone difference has ALWAYS left South Africa at a disadvantage. And for South African supporters, they get to see their heroes playing in a relevant tournament including those playing overseas. It would also have the effect of lifting European rugby to the next level because the tournaments are more competitive. Having the Cheetahs and Kings play in a European tournament has been good (for the Cheetahs at least). I personally can't wait to see South Africa exit the ANZAC setup and join a European competition. SANZAR have been poor in managing and developing Super Rugby. Each time they "tweak" or "rejig" or "change" it, it has been worse off. And the reason for this has been that, instead of trying to promote the game, Sanzar have been trying to maximize Advertising revenue. I really despise the conference system and miss the "good ol' days" of every team playing one another. Mehrtens has a very valid point... Super Rugby is no longer fun to watch and should fade away.

Here is the big problem for me with super rugby. The extended comp was mainly to help Australia teams that don't have a provincial comp like New Zealand (old NPC) and South Africa (Currie Cup). As I understand it, Australia only have club competition outside of super rugby. They had a problem that after super rugby concluded just before the rugby championship they had no regional or provincial comp to keep their international players playing at a high level till the end of year international season. The extended super rugby season has made the currie cup a watered down comp which use to be very strong. The top players are playing super rugby and don't play the whole currie cup season which have hurt the interest in the Currie Cup. I think super rugby should take the same format as the Heineken Cup in Europe so the best players can still play in the currie cup/NPC. Australia should maybe join the New Zealand NPC comp or start a league with Japan. That way the local comps will stay strong and teams can still play in a much shorter super rugby season. The European system make much more sense than what we currently have in the south.

@@rugbyfanz6208 That is very good news, there is no more reason to keep persisting with this drawn out super rugby comp and our local comps can return to being proper comps like they use to be and like they still have in Europe. I see it's called the NRC.
I hope SANZAR will change the super rugby format to something more sensible like the Europeans have with the Heineken cup.
The franchise system also makes very little sense. At the moment you can't even support your own countries teams when they play against teams from other nations because if your local teams win it influence your favorite teams chances of making the playoffs. It is a very strange format that doesn't make a lot of sense.

League is growing rapidly in NZ and Tonga but if you look at it overall in the Australasian region League is the bigger sport by far. Tonga has literally become a League island in a short period with mass code switches happenning according to Siale Piutau. A lot of talented young NZ rugby players are also opting to play league rather than union because of the lure of the NRL which is highly regarded in NZ more than any other rugby union comp outside of super rugby and rugby championship. So the day frontline all blacks stop playing super rugby that would be the end. More young players would shift to league because of the exposure of league stars they'll get coming into the country to play NRL games as well as the favorable timezones.

@@mickfarrell6458 Probably not in our lifetime or maybe when we are very old. But looking at some of the stats out there it doesnt look good for rugby in the future compared to league. Asians are the fastest growing demographic in NZ but their preference of sport is a bit of a mix. Then you have Maori and Pacifika populations that are also growing rapidly and thats where you have league spreading like wildfire in those communities. Rugbys ratings are also falling rapidly among millennials and gen z so pretty soon you might have a situation where rugby union is more for old folks and league for the young and vibrant generations. Also league is arguably the bigger of the 2 games in Auckland a city of 1.6 million which is a massive chunk of the population of NZ. The NZ warriors of the NRL have a bigger following in NZ than each of the 5 NZ Super Rugby franchises and the moment they reach their potential and start winning premierships that will be even more bad news for rugby.
The bottom line is that Super Rugbys crisis should not be seen only as NZs problem or SAs problem this needs to be seen as World Rugbys problem. Without a great Super Rugby you are only allowing Rugby League to take over the pacific a region that has won 5 world cups and has 5 countries within tier 1 and 2 rugby. The future Beauden Barretts will not be running out for Crusaders or Saracens but would instead aspire to play for the Rabbitohs, Warriors or the Storm. In fact thats already happening because there is already up to 4-6 kiwi leagueys that the All Blacks would die for one of which Jason Taumalolo NZ Rugby had an unsuccessful bid 2 years ago to sign him to switch.

Super rugby has become shit because of the shit conference system. Bring back the super 12 or 14 format and keep the wildcard system. Or fuck it you know what we will join the European comps more money in it anyway. We'll see what happens to NZ and Aus rugby if this happens.

surely the next cut of super rugby will be a new zealand team everyone else aus + SA have lost teams a pacific nations side instead of the chiefs etc playing the occassional match there. Disagree with more SA teams in Europe need a georgian or roumanian team if pro 14 is to expand.
Why not revamp the rugby championship each side to play 2 3 match test series each year one at home and one away one with most points win the championship say in year one NZ play 3 home tests v SA + 3 AWAY IN aus year 2 3 home v AUS + 3 AWAY IN ARG YEAR 3 3 HOME V ARG 3 AWAY IN SA.THE BIGGEST TROUBLE WITH SANZAR RUGBY YOU ARE SEEING THE SAME PLAYERS WEEK IN WEEK OUT. at the moment no all black team has the opportunity to play a series against another sothern hem team

If you want to go,go.And if that means the game in NZ dies,so be it.I have had a gutsful of NZ having to bend its knee to you saffers over every issue.
Our player base is pillaged by most rugby nations ( excl, ARG/SA),and our best coaches are propping up teams all around the world, and, due to a paucity of choices,we are probably going to end up with Foster as AB coach.
Frankly,I am getting to the stage where I almost don't want the AB's playing. What's the point,a B grade team getting smashed by all and sundry.
So,don't worry, saffer,NZ are a spent force. They won't be winning anything for a long time to come.

@@182Warren thanks for the kind response.Sadly,I think you will find NZ will be a spent force, for now. Why? 2 reasons, firstly,it looks like we are about to be saddled with Foster,NZ fortunes are going south, the guy is an idiot. And secondly,a paucity of quality players, mostly in the forwards. So,even with the right coach ( Robertson?),we will still struggle.
I really hope I am wrong on ths,but I have a bad feeling I will be proven right.
