Well, this is new(ish)! The design is from late 2017, but they changed the factory that produces them, and the result is a much better watch. Solid, chunky, and well made....... with the exception of the light bezel. A bit surprising that, perhaps it was just mine. Let's hope they fix it for the Wave Master 1.5.5! Cheers, Jody

Damn... I was hoping to buy that one in green next month, but with this exposure it's probably going to be sold out by the time I'm ready to order.
The early bird gets the worm! The re-release a few days back of the Helm Komodo saw their stock sell out in quick time. Happy to say though I was hovering around their website and 15 seconds past their designated sale time I had the white variant in my cart and 30 seconds later the transaction completed. Phew!
I checked less than an hour later and all stock was gone. Thanks for the review Jody 👍

@@andrewd7586 Same here, I got the e-mail alert that they were releasing 200 Komodos and I waited to pounce at the designated release date and time and got nowhere. Apparently there will be another release in April so will try again then.
I was there too - also selected the white dial - and was taken to a page that said "Congratulations". Foolishly I took a minute to add an additional bezel and when I tried to pay they were sold out. Less than impressed by the misleading message. I don't see why they do it this way when they ran pre-orders for the Vanuatu. This is the second time I have missed out - Helm are beginning to feel like a lottery.
Seems I should count my good fortune then if they all sold within 5 minutes. That's crazy. A lottery indeed. Hopefully you guys that missed out this round have better luck in the next release.
This is a VERY HEAVY watch. And I'm used to he's y watches. I was thinking about selling it, but then I saw the FKM rubber straps at strapco and ordered a couple. A great strap! And putting it on this watch reduces the weight and it still looks great! Now I'm wearing much more often.
So heads up - heavy watch, but wears nice with a quality rubber strap. I think it might be too heavy for a NATO.
I've just got mine in today. It's a thick one, but it works, in my opinion. The non taper engineer fits the aesthetic and I love the look of the bracelet itself. The screw links adjust really easily. It's a monster of a watch for what you pay. Easily worth twice the price.
I have the abalone dial and it's honestly stunning. I have gotten more compliments on it than any other watch in my collection and for good reason! It has become my go watch for daily wear. Love it
That's a good-looking watch! Love the contrast between the black ceramic bezel and the mother of pearl dial. Nice lume. It looks great on your wrist as well.
Overall looks like a real gem!
Not sure what to make of Phoibos. Have yet to pull the trigger on one. I have a Zelos Mako v3 which is amazing. And I was too late yet again to pick up a Helm. Plus all my Seiko divers....SKX007, PADI turtle, Samurai. I need another diver like a hole in the head. But......that abalone dial does kinda look cool. What’s one more, right? Great review as always.

The first wave master changed my outlook on watches. Two years on and it still is one of my favourite watches getting plenty of admiring comments ( I have the black dial with the blue hour markers).
Must be one of the best buys as you get so much watch for the money and mine is running at approx 3/4 seconds accuracy per day .

I just bought this model in the new rubber strap yesterday. Will probably get a aftermarket ‘super engineer’ strap for it also.
I think those with the flat end links giving the bracelet a sharper ‘drop down’ will make it look more svelte and stylish maybe. 👌

I think I'm the only one who doesn't put much emphasis on the importance of the bezel action, especially on a budget watch like this one. I put the inverted triangle at 12:00 and leave it there. Another great video Jody.

I bought this one a month ago. Love the dial and hand set. Logo and writing on dial should be smaller. Crown is kind of sharp as well as the clasp on bracelet.
Wore it for a day and the watch stopped working. It wasn't auto winding, took the back off to discover the o ring for movement holder was jammed in the winding rotor. I put the o ring back where it belongs, watch works great now.
Obviously the watch did not have any testing done after assembly.
Looks like a retirement gift from SPECTRE......oh that logo....

you are right about the original wavemaster bracelet--i finally gave up before i had a stroke. otherwise, pretty nice-not compelling in person, however, and not currently in rotation. there's no mistaking that logo on the dial, but the uniqueness doesn't make up for the amateurish appearance. the very best logo for a dive watch is the inimitable seahorse--this regal animal has probably been overused, but never equaled-even by the rolex crown!

Gorgeous watch!! I'd totally rock it with a black and white suit! But I don't like heavy and large watches on my small wrist. Makes them look like Roomba vacuums.
My 2 year old Wave,master is still one of my favourite watches (put on my own rubber dive strap) and I even think it's better then my 007.

I've got the mk1 version in blue and had no quality control issues, the bezel action is superb and no back play at all. The watch in general feels very high quality and I also own a Black Bay and a Christopher Ward and it's very good for the price when compared to these other way more expensive watches....

The bezel on my Gen 2 is also rather light, but very precise and has never moved accidentally. I like it a lot. The black dials were sold out by November: the green is lush.
Looks like phoibos read my post,signed crown logo,date at 6.00 oclock position ,logo on back .just the logo on the face not raised only painted on.but finally getting there.i like the mother of pearl face,but in the blue or green not white.thanks for the video.one more thing jordie can you measure the crystal width on future watches as some of us would like to upgrade to saphire if not provided.thanks.
With a part of my Christmas bonus, I just pulled the trigger on the Abalone version I've had my eye on for a while, from a local reseller (which lets me dodge import fees and taxes, as they've already been paid). Can't wait until it gets here!
you are right about the bezel, but I like the watch, black or blue dial would be my choice
I purchased this very one as soon as I got the email notification. I adore the watch but I go agree with the bezel.
I have the blue face wave master, was lucky enough to find it for under $150dlls at a jewelry store about 4 weeks ago
I have the Wave Master PY009C and love it. White dial with black bezel really pops but I'm not a fan of the pearl dial. I would definitely buy another if the dial was plain white with wave pattern.
It's actually the third iteration, the original one had smaller indicies, and the bracelet had smaller screws. This was then changed for the 2nd version. Now we have this version.
Spot on as always Jody: i looove that dial (maybe a bit too much like a woman's powder box) but it just doesn't match the mega bracelet. It will work better on a classic 40mm diver+ 20mm bracelet.

This watch with that dial is beautiful. I got a job and will buy my first diver to mark the occasion and this watch with this dial was almost my choice. But because is my first diver I will go for a black orient komasu.
Looks like the exact same bracelet as the one that came with the Helm Vanuatu. It’s comfortable and super solid if you like a weighty watch.

I've a Phoibus bronze diver and I'm pleased with it. This model to me looks slightly odd, I don't enjoy the find the gilt accents on the indices and hands, look odd against the large chunky steel case and bracelet. I'd also prefer to see crown protectors on a dive watch.
Absolutely LOVE the green one, however (1) waaaay too chunky, thick and a bit heavy for me (2) NH35 movement? It seems with many purchasers of watches with this movement, you never know what you're going to get - a good'un or a crap'un. I personally have no autos with this movement so have no experience with it, but I do however have a timegrapher so it would be very straightforward to regulate it. If it was a wee bit smaller I would buy one today.
I love mine! The bezel isn't the best I own, but otherwise a phenomenal watch in every way. Mine came in at +12/day. A real eye catcher and I get plenty of compliments. Mine's the abalone btw.
Still excellent value for money. My black PY007 stays in my rotation gets so many compliments. Thanks for another Phoibos review, Jody.
Would be great to put it head to head with the Chinese equivalent priced five watches like the San Martin ( though I wouldn't be surprised if they came out of the same manufacturing plant)

Just One More Watch Helllllllooo! Speaking of sub-$100 divers, CORGEUT makes a Blancpain 50 Fathoms homage that would be interesting to see in your lineup. Think it sells for about $80 USD... Just an idea - probably not as well-endowed as some of the other options, but a lot more elegant. Nice review today... love that bracelet and caseback (reminds me of the DH 1970, although the DH is a more refined, but not as capable in the depths - if anybody wearing these is going to go beyond 200m down). Keep up the good work!

I have to admit that I like all pearl variations...even the ones that are chips glued together to make a very colorful variety. The colors that pearl reflects is reward enough for the man-points I lose for wearing pearl! LOL
Had an Eagle Ray mk.1 for a little while. Lovely little thing, but just didn't bond with it so moved it on. The saw tooth bezel on that was oddly tinny, but felt excellent.
I'm tempted to use the JOMW voucher on a Great Wall though... it's big and silly, and that's a good thing.
I have the blue dial and love the mop, but as you said, sold out. I think their mop dial reminds people of Omega Seamaster white dial. At least this one i feel looks better plus the fraction of the price. I love the seamaster but I can't stand the hollow hands they designed. I'd they use the similar hands as Phoisbos, the shiringe style i would buy it.
Hey Jody (firstly apologies, I think I mis-spelled your name in my last comment). Was just thinking, as well as the waves, date at 6 like the Omega Seamaster (drool), quite a few nods to the Seamaster actually; same time markers (can’t remember the actual term) on the dial -double bar at 12 etc-. Just something that crossed my mind. I’ve got the green version of this watch. It has an excellent sunburst effect. Beautiful. However, completely agree, the bezel fit (if not finish which is lovely) leaves a bit to be desired. Might see if I can do something about that.
Just bought a MOP dial second hand. Waiting for it to come in. Looks stunning in video.
I had the mark 1 Wavemaster, nice watch but flipped it for the better quality Borealis Cascais.

Is your fault Jody that I have Just One More Watch (again). After viewing this review I went on the hunt of the Mother of Pearl PY010D. Looked all over the world and after 3 months at last got one from Sweden two weeks ago.
Had mine for a month or so now. Love the improvements. Still a bit thick and the NH35 is always meh. But damn the MOP is pretty. Love to wear it.
Hopefully they make a real v2 that's much thinner
The abalone is pretty dope too. The only way it will get thinner is for them to switch movements, but I seem to recall they use an ETA in one of their other models.
@@JohnClarkW yeah they used a 2824 in the Great Wall but then that has 500m water resistant and is bigger in ever way. I'd be fine if they went 2824 on a 200m and get it under 13mm while improving bezel feel. That would sort it to be perfect assuming it would still be somewhat reasonably priced
This is really nice. Really like the bracelet.
I actually have a version 1 Green. It’s nice but this is nicer. Version 1 had more polishing, and tiny bracelet screws. I like what they did here. Looks like they also went to orange markers on the chapter ring, version 1 had black markers, not enough of a contrast, made it hard to see the minute markers.
I always like their designs, seems like you get more than what they cost!!
I did want to order one , on their site is stated Free World Wide Shipping but they do charge $35 for it !!!!
Hey Jody, all the folks in the Seiko mod community are obsessed with MOP dials, present company excluded. I'm not surprised that it's sold out. Although, apparently there's a high failure rate when manufacturing MOP dials, so could be the aforementioned in combination with limited supply may account for it being sold out.
If it is 'on trend', that may well indeed explain the sold out status!
I love my gen one wave master, the bezel action on mine is great but I do have one problem with the bezel, after only a year and 2 months the paint is flaking off the insert and I haven't been rough with it and I haven't smashed it into anything, the white paint on all of the minute markers on the bezel are turning brown. It was also a chore getting them to cover it under warranty as the watch had been a present from a now ex girlfriend. Other than that I've had a superb experience with no QC issues beyond the one mentioned. Though I will say I liked the light blue hand set with the blue dial of the generation one.
All sold out over here in good old Blighty Jody but that doesn’t surprise me as they nearly always are. I’m bit of a phoibos fan so will have to wait til they come up on eBay lol. Great review as always

Great video once again! I sadly have to say that I don't care for companies who can get most of their products out of stock like Phoibos. I felt like I wasted 5 min of my life trying to find an available watch on that page.
I really like the look of this watch. Nice bracelet too. I really love the dial and color pattern on this one. I can't even moan about the price. Sadly with many dive watches, it's too chunky and heavy for my liking. Otherwise, it would be a contender if I needed a dive watch. I have several dive watches, too many Casio plastic watches including Gshock, I have one Chronograph, but 0 dress watches. Looking for 36 to 38 diameter thin dress watch. Hard to find them affordable where there are many at 40mm. Jody if you know of anything let me know, I know you probably have reviewed 100's of watches.

That's one of the best looking watches I've ever seen and it's got all the correct specs except one. Exactly my style, but the accuracy isn't there yet. I'd like it to be certified at +/- 5 seconds a day at least. I'd pay the extra to be on time.
I've found the NH35/36 to be consistent in its workings. As long as you have consistency from one day to the next you can regulate it to well within that +/- 5 seconds you desire.
You can always buy a timegrapher (Aliexpress has the Weishi 100 for just over $110 plus shipping, you need to shop around) if you have a few mechanical watches and regulate it yourself, there are heaps of videos on youtube showing you how to safely do this. Although I take absolutely no responsibility if you f... it up and break the watch!
The green version looks nice as does the abalone shell one , the abalone one would be a good one to get as , if I think correctly , no two will be the same due to cut and polishing?
Do like what Phoibos do as a company , nice watches at a decent price , what more can a watch person ask for?
The abalone shell dial is amazing. I ordered one from Long Island watch several months ago - the only issue I have is some back play in the bezel (which I understand to be a fairly common complaint).
I bought the unpopular abalone dial and really like it. What I hate is almost everything else. The glossy, too-wide bezel insert is heinous. I removed the insert and the watch looks a ton better without one. The bracelet is as formless as a mumu, so I didn't even bother with it and replaced it with some dead cow. Then I realized I was wasting too much time with this turd and stuck it in the parts box. Phoibos and good design go together like ice cream and ketchup.
I have 2 Phoibos watches, gotta say, them and Stührling make phenomenal packaging for the price point. Imho at least.

I urged anyone who wants a Phoibos Diver to save a little more and get hold of the Py009c. It has better lume, a no back play bezel and more importantly, a higher end Miyota movement. It may be off putting to some as its regarded as a Rolex Honage, but look closely and you will find Phoibos has attempted to give it a look of it's own.
Few weeks ago I was about to buy a steinhart ocean one, but than i came. across phoibos!
just. fell in love right away, great money for buck. Stein will have to wait a bit more, because yesterday i watched "top 5 microbrands 2020"...😆😆
Nice review (as always)! It looks like a $200 watch. That’s not a bad thing (and I say that with no horological snobbery intended), but there are some really nice watches that sell between $200-400 that really punch above their weight... The bracelet is great, looks solid with decent specs. The movement is way off, though - I’ve got the NH35 in two of my watches and they are each -4 without fiddling on my end. Anyhow, next! 😉

Hi Jody! Have you ever thought about reviewing the Orient Tristar line? Its a interesting alternative to the seiko 5, It has quite a few attractive dials ( I really like the champagne one)
Or.....just buy a Seiko or any one of hundreds of Chinese Omega/ dive watch homages. Sorry Jody I struggle to see the point of buying watches like this. Essentially they are all the same, offer no value retention, and no individuality., "wavemaster/Seamaster", come on,......Just seems like a waste of cash. Nicely filmed and presented as ever.

Box ticked beater watch sorted, my 1995 Seiko 7002 is still going strong, (not sure about tbe modern ones though lol), leaves me free to jump further down the horological black hole, and at least buy stuff that should I need too will give me my money back, a s opposed to acumalating a drawer full of junk,. lets be honest we only need one watch......we are all doomed in this hobby.

John Halverson personally I prefer this one. The Great Wall is very nice, and I like the colors but they are just a bit too big and flashy for me. But if you like it, the lume on the wall can’t be beat!
Jody, I bought a Lorus quartz field watch model RXD425L8 for £47 (UK) thinking it was the perfect watch because it was a seiko sub brand with a seiko quartz movement. 1 week in, I was losing 20 minutes a week, the threads from the fabric straps started coming off and I was completely gutted. Luckily the John Lewis online policy allowed me to return it for a refund. I’m stuck finding the closest thing to it, please could you suggest a field watch, same budget and good quality and time keeping please ! Much appreciated !

Phoibos make your logo smaller. It spoils a very nice face.

They could refine the logo into a more circular shape...then everything would look great! Logo lets them down in my opinion.
I think I like this one, but it would be a lot of a watch on my wrist, and I recently bought Orient Envoy Open Heart for dress occations. So the new watch itch is scratched. There is an open space for a new diver, though. Alas, my woman will kill me if I buy another watch. Now, if you would be kind to give away that one, and I win it... she might let me live :D

Overall this one looks OK but I think Phoibos needs to work on the bezel action. Maybe they should regulate the movement before they send it out for review?

the bezel play and action on my quartz subby phoibos is lightyears ahead of the one on the wavemaster, which is especially frustrating since not only did the subby come out quite some time earlier, it was also less than half the price.
other than that i do quite like this new wavemaster, got the MOP dial too after i returned an abalone dial version because of a misaligned dial.
still cant really decide between MOP and abalone, abalone has greater variation obviously and is therefore more subjective and it also lacks the wave pattern.

I found the bezel on mine to settle out much better after several turns.
Loved the look of the MoP and Abalone dials, however, both sold out (from their Euro distribution centre, and don’t fancy the VAT hit from their HK store) 🤦🏻♂️ Dial was really the main differentiator for me - you selling this one on the cheap Jody?? 😬

I need some input! Looking for my first ''proper'' diver watch, and i've done some research and have 4 candidates. The ones i've found of interest are Deep blue master 1000 v2,Phoibos wavemaster,Hamtun v2 kraken and Helm Khuraburi. Leaning towars the Phoibos, but the others seems like excellent choices aswell. What are your thoughts? My budget is maximum 300 dollars,incase there are other options i've overlooked. Thanks.

Gosh! This could be a poor man's Omega Seamaster 300m with the wave dial and those applied Indicies. Jolly good value for money!
