This is the first time I stumble upon this channel, and I was completely hooked onto your conversation. I could not agree more with several of the lists you talk about, like: When a true moviestar tries something different, and completely lands it, and it feels like something special as it is happening: Being Bill Murray in Lost in translation, Brad Pitt in Moneyball, Tom Cruise in Jerry Maguire, Jullia Roberts in Erin Brockovic, Sandra Bullock in Blindside, and after a few moments you mention Nathalie Portman in Garden State and Sandra Bullock in Speed as to people to fall in love with no problem. And then comes the list of most rewatchable moments in Lost in Translation, which is btw my alltime favourite movie, you list great moments, from the first movie ad, meeting the shallow blonde girl for the first time, Scarlet wandeing in Tokyo, Bob and Scarlet wandering in town, the Karaoke singing and so on and on. While both your lists are great, my favourite rewatchable moments are when Scarlet lets the waiter bring a cup of sake to Bob in the hotel-lounge, Bob consumes it and leaves for the elevator, and we see his reflection on the closing doors, smirking a little smile about the previous encounter. And ofcourse the whole scene when the song Sometimes by My bloody valentine sounds, Bob carrying a tired girl to her room. I also wish I never found out the whisper at the end of the movie, not knowing would be lost in translation, knowing spoils it. I am suprised how important you guys think is people getting an oscar, the oscars are very overrated, a very American thing, not a "World" thing. And lastly, Will Ferrel in Stranger than Fiction is a jetlag movie for him, I guess Although I am not American and don't understand a lot of references being made in this video, I am now very curious in your other videos and be sure to check them out! This is 100% one of my favorite movies ever. I rewatch it on the regular. I have had this kind of relationship once or thrice in my life, and I treasure them all. I wish that one could've continued beyond even years later. Ah well.
I loved this movie when it came out. I was kinda young, 22 ish. I could understand it. Even at that age. Now that I'm in my early 40s, it's at another level.
Not to be a know-it-all but she was mostly 17. It started filming in late September in 2002 and her birthday is in late November. I'm not sure if production wrapped before her birthday.
I think it's so timely you're doing this one now because this also shares an anniversary with 2 other crucial works of art. I just saw Death Cab and The Postal Service on the 20th anniversary Transatlanticism/Give Up tour, both of which are extremely cinematic albums but Transatlanticism specifically feels like the soundtrack to this movie as well as the Before Trilogy which I think should be covered too. Just amazing screenwriting and as you both said, endlessly rewatchable.
1st time listening to your podcast.... it was great, very enjoyable. I do LOVE this movie. I've watched it at least 50 times in my life. I thought he said something completely different at the end, something like "... if we ever came back it would never be the same...." oh well. The final kiss was FINE. Maybe in 2023 it feels odd, but it fits perfect for the way they gel together as human beings. Lastly, Will Ferrell has a fantastic serious role in Stranger Than Fiction. It's a fun movie, but he's not his usual slapstick crazy self. Plus, it takes place in Chicago, which is a plus.
I watched this while going thru withdrawal from opiates. The ending hit me so hard, wanting them to be together but knowing that would be a fantasy, and wondering what he told her. It blew my mind
One thing I particularly like about the film is it does an outstanding job of capturing realism. You would almost think such feats would be common in film, but true to life realism is not pulled off very often. I theorize more films then we realize go for this but it rarely pans out and then they play it off as though it was their intention to be theatrical, but some/many of them are failed attempts.
The more you know, who you are and what you want! The less you let things upset you! That's one of the best lines, I ever heard in a movie. Because it's true! I'm glad, that Sofia Coppola won the Oscar that year. Sean Penn gave an amazing performance in Mystic River. Nobody deserved the win more that year than him! BTW! I agree with Bill! Marisa Tomei should've played Mary in The Godfather Part 3. It probably would've been a better movie.
My sister's favorite movie. She's a very gifted writer who will probably be a great filmmaker herself some day. She doesn't want to REMAKE it, but rather adapt the concept for a TV series.
No remaking. This movie captures a very specific and wonderful early 00s feel. It makes you wanna turn on some early Adult Swim and Toonami. It should rest where it's at.
Again, she doesn't want to remake it. She wants to adapt the premise for a TV series. I mean, seriously, you can't see this working as a prestige TV type of scenario on HBO Max?
@@IndieGamerChick Maybe a 1 season, 10 episode ala Netflix Edgerunners maybe. I think Lost in Translation sits in a sort of time capsule like Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo. It exists in a different world and reality than what we live now. It's not about the story but about the overall vibe IMHO.
i just REWATCHED Lost In Translation after not seeing it for almost 20 years as one of my favorite movies... i thought maybe it would be weaker due to me thinking Scarlett was hot, but instead it was just as awesome as i remembered... the legendary Directing performance dancing with the 2 Classic American Stars in the ultra-foreign Japanese setting is still as Whimsical as any adult movie ive seen, and the Music is perfect... probably not in my top 10, but it might be #10 going up against Deer Hunter (slightly less whimsical film, but not without)... fax!!!
Bill, how dare you - Black Rain was set in OSAKA - NOT TOKYO. The city of Osaka gets ONE movie set in it over the course of the entire history of Hollywood films and you mistake it for Tokyo. Imagine someone calling Larry Bird a Lakers superstar. It cuts deep, Bill.
I think Scarlett Johansson's performance in Lost in Translation in excellent. I consider it even more impressive than Bill Murray's performance, but both are excellent.
I theorize Bill Murray's Lost in Translation character is pretty close to who he is in real life. As far as we know all the characters in the show are playing so called true to life characters, whether that's Cameron Diaz, Spike Jonze, obviously Scarlett is based on Sofia... so is it that much of a reach to think that Bill Murray could be based on Bill Murray (especially when I saw the interviews where Coppolla said it was either him or no one), however I tend to believe her when she says that she didn't know him and how difficult it was getting a hold of him, but maybe that's just a false front. But I'd imagine that he was based on an actual person in Coppola's experience. There are 3 or so Sean Connery references that I picked up on, so I consider that to be a possibility. Jack Nickolson seems like a viable theory as well, but no references. I assume that there could be a mis mash of timelines so things could have occurred earlier or later throughout Copolla's life experience.
Believe me or not, I think this film could have a sequel with the two leads. It would be, not about romance, but about the final days of the Bob Harris character. He's alone and dying and somehow Charlotte enters into his life and helps him deal with his death. Another expression of love, as it were.
I wanted to make this comment. From "I brought you flours" to the Wreckless Eric "Whole Wide World" scenes among some others, I feel it's a good comparison.
Steve Martin sort-of consummates the older man/younger woman dynamic a couple of years later with Claire Danes in "Shopgirl". I say "sort-of" as it's more of the cautionary tale where they got together.
Best performance?? That’s bold! Kingpin, What about Bob, and Groundhog Day and Scrooged are my Bill Murray Mt Rushmore… sorry actual Rushmore and Garfield a tale of two kitties 🤔😆
I just re-watched this, and for the first time I was slightly creeped out and didn't get into their magic like I had in the past, and I think it is entirely because I am much further away in age from Scarlett, and her youth comes across much more strongly now.
This movie would have more appropriately been characterized as "unwatchable", and you can include Bill Murray's wildly overrated performance as well. Not to mention, although I will, his childish tantrum at the Academy Awards when he didn't win. One of the most overrated actors of all time.
Dobbs was in Bron Miami Finals mode in this episode
2011 or 2014?😂

Most Rewatchable scene #1: Karaoke scene. Scarlett singing the Pretenders, Bill singing Roxy Music. Fucking poetry.
Amanda was deep in her bag during this episode, absolutely spitting
Finally! Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind for next week.
You should have Amanda as a regular guest! The song Just like honey, won the movie!
Sofia Coppola’s two breakthrough films - “The Virgin Suicides” and “Lost in Translation” - are on my top 10 for each decade they came out.

Phenomenal movie. Bill Murray is a treasure.
waiting for the 5 hour rewatchables episode of when you guys finally do the before trilogy
Just watched this for the first time, great movie. Murray is so perfect in his role, CANT BELIEVE Scar Jo was only 18 WOAH

Wonderful movie, great discussion about the film- many thanks
Adore this movie.
Quick Change and Scrooged are both terrific films.

Dobbs should have called out Air on the soundtrack considering her love of virgin suicides. Alone in Kyoto is so perfect in that scene
I was too young to get Garp, but Robin Williams & DPS. That was when the switch filled for me... Soul-Salito!
Absolutely GOATED soundtrack. My Bloody Valentine and Kevin Shields ftw.

Yes. Two souls abandoned to Tokyo…but grow together over (up to) 30 days or something.

Farris’s boyfriend was beatboxing-era Timberlake
Singer in a bar - White Lotus season 2 ..
Not a movie but a great bar singer and character
Bummed Scarlett wasn't nominated for the film, but I freaking loved Whale Rider at that time.
I probably watched it about 30 times. Then I went to Japan. Since then I have watched it about 30 more!
Glad someone else caught that!
Plz do a Napoleon Dynamite pod
Apex Mountain for Suntory was Penguin's Memory (1985).
No. The 10-episode series the fantastic "Midnight Diner." What if they met there and Midnight Diner (Netflix) was where they met, talked, etc.
I think Scarlett Johansson's performance in Lost in Translation in excellent. I consider it even more impressive than Bill Murray's performance, but both are excellent.
Scarlett Johansson's best performance is Under The Skin imo. Her British accent was really good and all while playing a predatory alien.
Coppola for me is Virgin Suicides...Very intresting start of a career.
2003 is apex mountain for American films set in Tokyo - this and Goldmember
I theorize Bill Murray's Lost in Translation character is pretty close to who he is in real life. Harrison Ford is a good guess as well
Hotel bar scene...
The Shining?
What book does Sofia Coppola have out? I've googled and nothing comes up..
how is the car scene with sometimes not the needle drop moment
Sean Penn’s Best Actor Oscar wins robbed the moment for both Bill Murray, and later on, Mickey Rourke, and arguably neither’s career came close again.
Apex mountain for insomnia movies is Fight Club.
did Bill seriously just call SCROOGED not a fun movie?!?!?! that and QUICK CHANGE are fucking awesome
Believe me or not, I think this film could have a sequel with the two leads. It would be, not about romance, but about the final days of the Bob Harris character. He's alone and dying and somehow Charlotte enters into his life and helps him deal with his death. Another expression of love, as it were.
Ribisi apex was Boiler Room.
Paid in full rewatachable. Do it!
Murray's best performance was in The Razor's Edge which nobody saw.
No. Just no.
Stranger Than Fiction... Ferrell's Lost in Trasnlation
I wanted to make this comment. From "I brought you flours" to the Wreckless Eric "Whole Wide World" scenes among some others, I feel it's a good comparison.
Do The Abyss
Bill names Jack Nicholson as a poor second to Bill Murray in the role. My choice for poor second would be Steve Martin
Makes a lot more sense
Steve Martin sort-of consummates the older man/younger woman dynamic a couple of years later with Claire Danes in "Shopgirl". I say "sort-of" as it's more of the cautionary tale where they got together.
"My absolute HERO"
The Godfather III
Godfather III was going to be bad regardless. The plot and general execution are freaking terrible.
Broken Flowers.
I have to disagree only on the hotel movie opinion. It's definitely, "Lost in Translation,’ starring Bill Murray, Scarlett Johansson, and Tokyo Japan😊
Please do Interstellar!
Phillip Seymour Hoffman would've been a good second option if Bill didn't take the role
Will ferrell everything must go is dope
Memorabilia?
What a whiff...
The mic from the karaoke scene!
Memorabilia is obvious Scarlet’s underpants. I wouldn’t keep them, but I bet you could get a pretty penny auctioning them off.
Casablanca used a bar better. I love LIT, but...
Best performance?? That’s bold! Kingpin, What about Bob, and Groundhog Day and Scrooged are my Bill Murray Mt Rushmore… sorry actual Rushmore and Garfield a tale of two kitties 🤔😆
It's a real stretch to say Coppola had a big decade. It's really Lost in Translation and not much else.
If she never does anything even close to Lost in Translation again, that'll do.
Lost me at - my absolute hero is Sophia Coppola...
I just re-watched this, and for the first time I was slightly creeped out and didn't get into their magic like I had in the past, and I think it is entirely because I am much further away in age from Scarlett, and her youth comes across much more strongly now.
As soon as I see this girl I know this will be boring.
