  • A demo of using SketchUp spGears plugin and animating them with SketchyPhysics.
    Excel calcs are:
    Cell C2 "=B9/80%"
    Cell D2 "=((B2*C2)/PI())/2"
    (Drag to repeat on cells C3 and D3)
    Cell E2 "=D2*10"
    Cell D4 "=(SUM(D2:D3)+D2)"
    Cell C4 (Ring gear calc) "=((E4*2)*PI()/(C3*10))"
    Cell B4 "=(E4*2)*PI()/(C3*10)"
    B2 and B3 are direct ref to B7 and B8 (user input for tooth counts)
    B9 is desired pitch measurement
    My measurement point for the pitch is NOT true to the proper engineering spec (should be partially along the edge of the tooth) but in SU, it's reasonably close enough.

    The gear is pushing each other. The teeth are not intertwined. What is the object property. Sphare, convxhull

    I found the demonstration very interesting and also simple for hobbyis, but I wonder what is the formula behind B4 in your Excel sheet .

      My apologies!..Hadn't realised I missed that one. I've updated the description, but it's "=(E4*2)*PI()/(C3*10)"
      The calcs are done to help work out diameters based on the number of teeth given for the sun and planet gears, and the desired pitch. These affect the overall size of the resulting gear set. I've yet to progress the sheet to work out the ratios when various elements are held/driven/output..but there's plenty of online calculators that can assist. Cheers.

    WONDERFUL!!! You DEFINITELY can do this in your sleep. However, it might be a good idea to TELL your audiance and EXPLAIN what you are doing to get there rather than RACING through it as fast as you can to show everybody what you can do.........

      15 minutes isn't exactly racing through it and I can actually do this in about 5 minutes. Rather than talk my way through the video, I put the notes so you can pause the video, read the note and follow along. The modelling skills are for adv beginner and up, but the theory and mechanics in behind planetary gearsets needs a bit of background knowledge. In my early days of being a mechanic I was fascinated by the engineering in the Scorpion tank transmission (a TN15 gearbox in the FV101) and how fast these things could go, and was my first introduction to the planetary gearset. Not long after I joined up we decom'd the Scorps, but not before I took one for a 'slightly unauthorised' drive. :-)
