just did this with a £60 white and wood top coffee table, using pale grey, finished with dark wax. The wooden top I covered with globes cut from tissue wrapping paper, layered and decoupaged till dry and also finished with dark wax. I saw a French provincial coffee table on Pinterest and did as close a copy as I could. It looks lovely, and it was bought for £3220 less. I know the original is fantastic quality wood, and mine is mdf, but to look at it, no one would know. Annie and others have allowed us mere mortals to have the look we want on a budget. Long may she continue!
Dear Annie after many years we have just discovered your videos. The books we have, dog eared and paint/glaze spattered as they are, made this housepainter a ton of money. Thanks to you and Isbell, Jocasta and Pierre too.
I have been painting for years and by far Annie Sloans paint is SO EASY!! If you love the shabby distressed look Annie's the girl for you ! I did a hug queen size bed. Total time start to finish 2 hours. Looked wonderful. Wax must cure, other than that bring the projects on.
Thanks for sharing how easy this paint is to use, Annie. Using too much wax is always the issue with my students ...wax on, wax off! Learning to relax and have fun is the joy of painting.
GREAT tutorial!!!...the piece was in bad repair...that's the kind of stuff I like to do...and as for the people giving you snarky comments....I admire you greatly....I think what you have done is fabulous! You've started a whole new wave of recycling furniture as well as a way for people to express themselves artistically....bravo for you!
Wow...I am new to this...just bought your pain Annie and I am getting addicted. At first I thought....Oh my...there is so much dark wax but then you went back with the clear and the sand paper and the finished result was beautiful. I am beginning to see that there really isn't any rules to this at all. Chalk painting is a unique expression of ones creativity. Thank you for making painted furniture, etc so much fun.... Loving it. And you are adorable. Nice to see the face behind the name.... Blessings.
Thank you so much for your wonderful tutorials, Christina. I just finished my first Annie Sloan restyle of a cherry-stained night table/cabinet in our master BR, using AS Old Ochre and Clear Wax (I chickened out on the Dark Wax for this project). Have no idea what kind of wood it is. I'm so proud of it for a first effort and now I seem to look at everything in our house with an eye to restyling it! You, You Tube, Christina Muscari, and Christen Bernsten provided just about all of my inspiration and lessons! Thank you, thank you! I wish I had known about your paints 10 years ago!
Amazing video!!! You are the only person that has truly explained how to gI've a piece of furniture a distress look with definition making a piece of furniture a true antique look!! Thank you so much.. I did things the hard way I wish I'd watch this video a day ago! Hehe.. well good thing that now I'm working on my armoire.. thank you so much for this tutorial!!! Love it very helpful and easy technique!
Honestly I preferred the wood, the before look. I must admit, I am not a fan of the distressed look. I will keep checking this lady out. Recently a friend told me about Annie Sloan and chalk painting, and this same friend does chalk painting courses. Thanks for showing us how to do these creative steps.
I would definitely have more appreciation for this technique had she done it over the top of a cheap, easily available wood like pine or poplar. Covering over beautiful mahogany that way is nauseating. And I've had to be the one to remove milk paint from a mahogany table before, and it's a nightmare to get it all out of the fine grain!
Chalk painting has been around for a long time. Sorry Annie Sloan apparently you copied an application. But don't say it's yours when it's not 'cause you might get sued or called out.
I am so inspired by these videos! They are amazing and so is chalk painting! These videos really help us "newbies" learn a lot about steps and what to dos and what not to dos. Thanks again so much!
Hi Minnis, Thank you. I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying the painting! This is correct, the paint does crackle when the paint is applied unevenly - where the brush strokes are applied heavier in some parts than others. Humidity can have an affect on this and some colours can crack more easily than others. If you could get in touch with the stockist that you bought the paint from they will be happy to guide you through the process. I hope this helps!
I'm in the camp of not vandalising antique furniture like this , you just know that it will end up in a charity shop in 10 years and someone will have the fun job of restoring it again.
Just watched this video, I'm now hunting out furniture at car boot sales to start with before I attack my bedroom furniture! Ikeas flat pack is going to go Annie Sloan , wish me luck and thank you Annie!!! X x my bedroom will have character
I had 3 choices written down and Paris grey and old white were 1st, thank you for your advice and I will upload when finished... I'm beside myself waiting to get started ha ha
Can I just add that not everybody likes certain things and the same can be said for not everyone has manners or tact. If you are opposed to this then keep your negativity to yourself :) good work Annie :)
I just love this look, just starting myself and about to purchase paint from one of your outlets in Melbourne Derbys :) Can't wait, only used 'ordinary' paint so far - looking forward to trying the clear and dark waxes. Fantastic! Thank you for sharing all your techniques :) xx
Es terrible ver como una pieza concebida con lujo de detalles y construida con maderas finas que ya incluso pueden estar extintas sea arruinada de esa forma solo para que haga juego con el iPhone.
Absolutely! I agree not everything has to be shabby chic. It is not a style I put on everything by any means. I assess the piece and paint it appropriate to its period and style. I have over 30 colours so I love to use other colours and techniques that I have developed. Washes, textures, crackled paint, smooth paint etc etc. have a look at my book, Colour recipes for Painted Furniture and more and you will see there what I mean. Thanks for the comment!
I painted a piece for my kitchen in red and put the dark wax on. It turned out beautiful but even after 3 coats of clear wax, the top was not as durable as I wanted it. So I decided to do something that I was sure would drive Annie Sloan crazy. I put a coat of clear varnish on the top only. I love the piece now. I can put anything down on it and just wipe it off with a damp cloth. Has anyone else ever used varnish on an Annie Sloan piece?
+powertokanon ! Thank you for this handy hint! I am about to do my bed, but have seen finished items before and know that they would get scratched in our house. Kids and dogs jumping on the beds, etc.
I love painted furniture. I liked it prior to painting. I think the addition of the dark wax is what I didn't like. However, you saw it up close, so it may have been more in a shambles than what I detected. It just my opinion. However, thanks for posting the video as it's educational.
lovely , just purchased 3 of your books waiting for them to arrive , and found a stockist in NZ of your paint , can't wait to get started :-) instead of using paint from the hardware store lol
You can apply it immediately it is dry- about 30 mins or so depending on the ambient temperature and thickness of the paint. You could leave it for weeks to wax it.
I paint and it dries very quickly - more or less in 10 or 20 mins depending on thickness and ambient temperature - might be more if its cold and damp and very thick. Then I wax right away. After I have waxed, which I do a side at a time - I wax with clear wax rubbing the wax well in then while the wax is still 'wet' apply the dark wax so it can be rubbed in and not get dried and absorb in so it can be applied smoothly and softly.
Love the paint. I used Paris Gray on my kitchen table and applied the dark wax yesterday. I wanted a "streaky" would grain look. I am afraid I have used too much. It is smooth if I wipe my hand across (24 hours later), but tacky if I press my hand on it. Should I buff or wait another day? Do I apply clear wax? or will it take off the dark wax effect? Thank you
beautiful work! i have 1 question....why are there so many how to videos using annie sloan chalk paint? is there some sort of incentive involved for using her products? If so, where do I sign up? I'll make a good video for some free (expensive) chalk paint
Hi Annie i am new to using your paint but can not wait to experiment !! it is like doing a painting painting on a piece of old furniture .. wonderful endless hours of pleasure await . I was told that if i applied heavily and then hair drier apply to it that it would crackle ..its not happening . Is there more to this crackle effect than heat ? thankyou so much and so glad to have the ability now to make everything special ..and to easily access the product and expertise ..
So excited to see your tutorials on RUclips!! Can't wait to share them on Pinterest and on my own Facebook page! Now, question for you, what do you think of just wiping on the wax instead of brushing it on? I've heard to use cheesecloth? But the way you described putting the wax on almost sounded like that would put on to heavy of a coat.
I think she did a Beautiful job, quickly. Took me days, and I am not finished. When you let the clear wax dry for a week or 2, do you have to reapply more clear wax before coming in with the dark wax?
Hi Donna, you don't need to leave the Clear Wax that long before applying Dark Wax. If you have waited that long, don't worry and just go straight in with the Dark Wax and then finish with a final coat of Clear to make sure the whole piece is covered. Make sure you remove any excess off with a clean, lint-free cloth
Thank you. The cabinets are particle board, I did not prime them first and should have. All of the scratches show from sanding etc, I should have used wood putty where the board is chipped and peeled. I now have TSP to remove the wax,(both clear wax and dark wax). I will use that, putty the chunks of missing wood, and use a primer and start all over. It's the flat board (cabinets) that have no nice features, no dips, grooves, the distressing didn't do anything good for these cabinets. So now I am going for a eggshell effect with acrylic paint. I am going to find something else to chalk paint though. Hope I do a better job next time. :)
A question: how do I care for my Annie Sloan furniture as every finger, tin or bottle leaves a scratch or stain. The surfaces stay soft. I put on two coats of paint as well as two coats of wax, rubbing very well after each coat of wax.
I developed this paint in 1990 - there was no paint like this before - and I have been working on my methods for years and years working as a painter, with a small shop and an author. The success of my paint has nothing to do with branding. So cynical!
love your paint Annie..havent tried yet but Im going to..Im so sad to see negative opinions here..not necessary to bash anyone...if you dont like the look just dont use the paint and be kind..
Hi Annie, I have fallen in love with the painted furniture. I have a large bedroom suit that my parents gave to me years ago, it's solid pine but it's looking very dated and dried out. My husband and I have talked about painting it white but I wanted to achieve the dark look in the cracks (almost black). Do you have any suggestions?
love this video! How long do u have to wait after u apply a coat of clear wax to add dark wax? I was sure if u had to let it cure for 24 hrs or can u immediately apply the dark? thank u!
+Alisha Sands Sorry for the late reply. Start working the Dark Wax in to Clear Wax before the Clear Wax has dried. Afterwards leave it to cure overnight before you start using it.
Hi Annie , I was wondering if there are any clips of you painting a wall ? I would like to paint my kitchen Paris grey ,how much water would I need to mix with the paint ?
my house is full of mahogany which i was going to get rid of as im getting a modern black/charcoal lounger and swivel chair...i wish i could send you pics of the furniture pieces as after seeing other pieces im so excited to start. My feature wall is red and silver...silver/grey curtains and I was wondering if i should paint the corner unit and fire surround grey with distress, any advice you could give me would be much appreciated..TIA
I have already started my bedside table project and am wondering how long can you wait to apply the wax? Can you wait a week? a few days? The boutique I go to, to buy the chalk paint and wax is ALL OUT of wax, both light and dark. But, I was too anxious so I began painting. help?
Thanks for your comment and for your opinion. The piece was in fact not in great condition even though it did appear that it was. These sort of reproduction pieces are easily available in France where I bought it. Some in good condition but this one was damaged inside.
I have made a kitchen hutch with all NEW wood....unstained....do I have to purposely stain the wood, then use chalk paint afterwards? How would the darkness show through from underneath, if there was no darkness to start off with? I want to just paint the new would, then make it look old and distressed. Please help...thanks..
Hi Murle, it depends what effect you would like for the finish! I would suggest going straight on with Chalk Paint® and seeing what the effect is. Staining furniture before painting is not advised as the finish may bleed through. Take a look at our two-colour distress video which may be more what you are looking for: ruclips.net/video/kpYgfpFtWNw/видео.html
When i used Annie slogans paint on my chest of draws it the paint easily gets scratched and chipped. I used 3 layers of wax too! I didn't want to go for the distressed look. I wwanted a smooth sleek look. What aim i doing wrong?
You should consider using milk paint instead of chalk paint. However, if you absolutely want to use chalk paint you should sand down the item first and then apply the chalk paint. The paint will adhere better to the wood and not chip.
I have unfinished but old weathered rocking chairs. Do I need to use something to seal the wood I'm afraid if I don't the old weathered wood will soak up all the paint and it will take more paint. Do I need to put a sealer first if so what products should I use?
Hi Eloise, it needs to be 'lint-free' - so for example wool wouldn't work as it would leave small fibres on the paint. We use torn old bed sheets, or you could use a cleaning cloth, as long as it doesn't leave residue fibres. - Amy W
I personally wouldn't have painted that beautiful piece of furniture. I have a very old set of dressers that need to go in the garbage! Instead, I'm going to attempt this technique, and see what happens. I bought a smoked green chalk paint...the color of the dressers now is black. Then I bought the wax and the antiquing wax. Hopefully I'll get some more use out of the dressers. They can't look worse than they do now..
Finally used chalk paint. The result was a little disappointing at first and I found the waxing process a royal pain. Once I got over the hassle of the project I started appreciating the results. Then I needed to paint over part of it. The area was too small to justify buying another chalk paint color so got a small bit of latex. After reading Annie Sloan's recommendations I wiped thoroughly with mineral spirits after sanding. New paint looks great but after three days it's still tacky to the touch. CAUTION: chalk paint is easy to put on but pretty much limits you to chalk paint in the future. No product or technique is right for every project. Proceed with caution if you will be keeping the piece you're about to paint.

Hello Magic Gordo!! You are most welcome! Keep watching, and keep painting!
Thanks to you and Debbie Cooper-Ramos of Peinture Store I am learning how to reclaim furniture and embellish my nest. Love everything Annie Sloan!

Charlie Forzano, bad repair? She completely ruined a nice piece of furniture??
I like it. The stippling/texture gives it almost a stucco effect. With the dark wax it is really noticeable. Perked it right up.
rambleberryfarm wondeful idea

I am sure you can order online

Wow so nice and i can imagine people trying it who aren’t experienced and not being happy with the results 😂
I love this style. I've some boring pieces of furniture with a little bit of paint will be beautiful again. Thanks for sharing :)
I'm in the camp of not vandalising antique furniture like this , you just know that it will end up in a charity shop in 10 years and someone will have the fun job of restoring it again.
Very professionally produced videos. You make the technique look easy!
OMG, what she do to that antique cubby, the music totally fits to the pain ☺

love your paint techniques
I am starting my first project with your paint on an old china hutch.
a little nervous but really excited to start!
Need to see this because I am getting a new banquette made and I want to do this for it... 3-8-20

Annie, i have just purchased your paint and I am super excited! Can you do a tutorial on how to use your paint on metal?
Ay no!!! Echó a perder ese mueble tan bonito!!! Los míos están bien traqueteados, por eso los quiero pintar! Pero ese estaba perfecto. No tenía nada!

powertokanon Did you varnish over the wax?
i revamp furniture varnish is the way to go .. wax is crap soft finish and eventually just collects dust and isnt as easy to wipe down
+powertokanon ! Thank you for this handy hint! I am about to do my bed, but have seen finished items before and know that they would get scratched in our house. Kids and dogs jumping on the beds, etc.
Yes. Annie sloan makes a beautiful varnish for high use applications.
I love painted furniture. I liked it prior to painting. I think the addition of the dark wax is what I didn't like. However, you saw it up close, so it may have been more in a shambles than what I detected. It just my opinion. However, thanks for posting the video as it's educational.
lovely , just purchased 3 of your books waiting for them to arrive , and found a stockist in NZ of your paint , can't wait to get started :-) instead of using paint from the hardware store lol
thats the loveliest technique ive seen :)
Wow this is beautiful
Oooo paint is so attractive! lol 😊
You can apply it immediately it is dry- about 30 mins or so depending on the ambient temperature and thickness of the paint. You could leave it for weeks to wax it.
Hermoso, lástima no tener sus productos en mi país. Muy hermosa la técnica.
Nossa que alegria, a legenda em português!!!! Que bênção, muito grata!
Hello.
a good example of the application of paint and decor.
look how I turned out black marble with putty and paint.

I love it! Good job!!!
Great painting skills I love it
I'm loving the music on this clip ... who's it by ? Could listen to it while I paint my mahogany battered dining set . !
And what a great store it is!! Love that store in California!
beautiful work! i have 1 question....why are there so many how to videos using annie sloan chalk paint? is there some sort of incentive involved for using her products? If so, where do I sign up? I'll make a good video for some free (expensive) chalk paint
With the dark wax, willl the piece be the color you want it to be or will you always see the dark wax in your piece.
Thanks so much Charles! It is easy!! x
Hi Annie i am new to using your paint but can not wait to experiment !! it is like doing a painting painting on a piece of old furniture .. wonderful endless hours of pleasure await .

I love it, video and audio is great, nice, simple and effective. Thank you for sharing :)

love these paints, just painted a side table, think i may have gone ott on the dark wax though
Beautiful

The cabinets are particle board, I did not prime them first and should have. All of the scratches show from sanding etc, I should have used wood putty where the board is chipped and peeled.

+Dirk Maree : See powertokanon comment below. Does that help?
+Debra Goring thanks Debra, it has certainly helped me! Thank you for alerting me to Powertokanon's advice.
+Madam C : Welcome, I just happened to read the comments below. :O)
+Dirk Maree Seal it with Rustoleum protective topcoat or poly.
@@tatiana.mp3 INSTEAD of wax! You can't put poly over wax = gooey mess
I developed this paint in 1990 - there was no paint like this before - and I have been working on my methods for years and years working as a painter, with a small shop and an author. The success of my paint has nothing to do with branding. So cynical!
Annie Sloan can you use your paint on wrought iron?
Motivational! ❤❤❤
This turned out gorgeous!!! :D
love your paint Annie..havent tried yet but Im going to..Im so sad to see negative opinions here..not necessary to bash anyone...if you dont like the look just dont use the paint and be kind..
You do amazing work!

Can I use Annie Sloan Chalk paint over a coat of water base paint ?
ok I don't like brush marks. Does this leave brush marks with this technique ?

Hi Murle, it depends what effect you would like for the finish! I would suggest going straight on with Chalk Paint® and seeing what the effect is. Great work!! So the Dark wax is basically a glaze for Chalk Paint? Can you use a top coat like a poly over chalk paint??
When i used Annie slogans paint on my chest of draws it the paint easily gets scratched and chipped. I used 3 layers of wax too! I didn't want to go for the distressed look. I wwanted a smooth sleek look. What aim i doing wrong?
You should consider using milk paint instead of chalk paint. However, if you absolutely want to use chalk paint you should sand down the item first and then apply the chalk paint. The paint will adhere better to the wood and not chip.
Am I crazy to tackle a large buffet as my first big project?
Absolutely not! You can do it :)
No, you’re not crazy! I just did my china hutch as my first piece :)
I have unfinished but old weathered rocking chairs. Do I need to use something to seal the wood I'm afraid if I don't the old weathered wood will soak up all the paint and it will take more paint. Do I need to put a sealer first if so what products should I use?
Lorrie Cummings doesn't need sealing. Just paint
Although I liked the pc before the paint. The paint is quite lovely.
TR M - sorry you feel like that. It wash't in great condition in fact and it has been kept going - recycled because of the painting.
What kind of cloth do you use please Is it just like a muslin? Thank you.
Hi Eloise, it needs to be 'lint-free' - so for example wool wouldn't work as it would leave small fibres on the paint. We use torn old bed sheets, or you could use a cleaning cloth, as long as it doesn't leave residue fibres. - Amy W
Fantastic!
The best furniture distressing video I have seen !!! perfect !!! Just question - wax? I am in Uk, is it wax the same as varnish? Thanks a lot !!!
xx
Beautiful!
I am sorry you feel like that. The piece was in a bad state of repair and I thought it was a good way to keep it going as a piece of furniture.
God, the British are so ahead of everyone in class!
How about Paris Grey? maybe over Old White?
This is Sparta!
Could you do kitchen cabinets like this?
I love it! Thank you very much!
can one use chalk paint over an oak veneer surface?
I painted my bed frame with this tecnic but I don’t like how it looks can I put more chalk paint on the top of wax of I hve to sanding? Please hep me.
No need to sand! You can paint straight on top of the Chalk Paint® Wax with more Chalk Paint®.
Annie Sloan thank you for you helped me.
How would you use this paint and wax on new furniture, getting a nook made want to distress it.. 3-8-20
The same as any furniture!
After clear waxing I awfully ruined a cupboard painted in latte brown chalk paint. It became on spots as if the cupboard is dirty.
Classic!
What a question! I am looking for inspiration....... .......!
Amazing what someone can do with some simple branding .
Love the music!!!
